((Is’Kah’s Office, Security Complex, Deck 9, USS Valkyrie))
While reviewing the new arrival’s personal files, Is’Kah called Ensign Hughes for zhen part of the onboarding for the ship. After introductions, the petite Trill hybrid prepared to dig in deeper.
Is’Kah: Your records indicate that you have five parents and eight siblings. Could you please confirm whether this information is accurate?
The hybrid knew he was one of ten children, but that was part of Is’Kah’s screening process. It was often the little things that Changelings got caught up in. Zha also knew zha was being overly paranoid and that there had been zero incidents since Frontier Day, but it was zhen job to protect the ship.
Hughes: ::blinking in confusion:: It’s 9 siblings actually, ma’am. But one of my siblings is my twin sister? Maybe there was some kind of mix up because of that? ::he said, trying to offer an explanation for the miscommunication:: I could request my master file from my home colony if it would help?
The petite Trill hybrid checked the terminal.
Is’Kah: I have identified the source of data corruption; it appears that the Academy did not transmit the complete record to us.
Hughes: Can we request a complete record from the Academy, Lieutenant? ::he asked hopefully::
Is’Kah: I have just done that.
Zha noted that the water for the tea was steaming. Rising, Is’Kah took the pot in zhen bare hands and slowly poured the water over the tea leaves.
Is’Kah: May I offer you a cup of tea, Ensign?
Hughes: ::mouth open in amazement:: Does that not burn your hands, Lieutenant? ::He asked curiously as he observed what seemed almost ceremonial to him::
Is’Kah: ::Raises eyebrow:: No. As a half-Vulcan, I inherited their tolerance for heat. When the average summer temperature is 60 °C, most items are also around that temperature or hotter.
He took a moment to consider zhen, much as Is’Kah would when overthinking.
Hughes: Permission to speak freely, ma’am?
Is’Kah: Of course. In fact, I encourage it during our conversation.
Hughes: I’m actually a coffee guy. ::he answered apologetically:: Unless it’s a symbolic ceremonial offer of tea that gives us a chance to bond over a cup? ::he fumbled awkwardly. He was a bad diplomat and always struggled with social interactions.::
The petite officer placed the teapot back on the burner before turning off the flame.
Is’Kah: The intended purpose of the Vulcan ritual was for bonding. However, coffee does not alter it in the way I will serve it. How do you prefer your beverage?
Hughes: Response
Rising, Is’Kah went to zhen replicator and ordered his coffee. Returning to the zhen chair, the petite Vulcan hybrid bowed slightly while holding the cup, the base in one palm, the handle facing Hughes, the other hand steadying the cup.
Is’Kah: Please accept this token of peace and friendship.
Hughes: Response
After sitting, Is’Kah looked at zhen terminal.
Is’Kah: Have you ever been in contact with, been replaced by, had dinner and a hologram with, or been killed, even if you got better, by a changeling?
Hughes: Response
