((Outside Holodeck 1, Deck 5, USS Valkyrie-A))
Strathmore: No, Caylus and Maugiron were killed during the duel and were given lavish funerals by the King. The King banned dueling and then was assassinated later in his life. Livarot, however, survived and had quite the career as a cavalry captain. But enough of my boring lecture. Let us live history and see if we can change our fate, eh? Who wants to be Livarot?
Lennai: I feel that the experienced fencer should be the one who initially survived.
Zol: ::Smiling:: I will certainly not deny a chance at life. Though I can't vouch for my later career as cavalry officer - I've only ridden a horse once.
Strathmore: No problem. I’ve only ever ridden a horse on the holodeck.
oO I imagine they behave a bit more on the holodeck in comparison to real life. Oo
Lennai: What kind of clothes will we be wearing, anyhow?
Zol: Uncomfortable ones, to be honest. High collars. Ruffles everywhere. Hose and stockings. Jerkins, doublets, capes - feathers and flowers in your hair, if you want to show off.
Strathmore: Sounds like an excellent outfit to me.
Lennai: Oh dear. ::Chuckling.::
Zol: ::Draws rapier:: This was the weapon of the age, when it came to duels. The rapier. It's light, easy to wield, practical. ::Holds it out:: Give it a try, if you'd like.
Strathmore: ::Gesturing to Vaysha:: I’ll let you do the honors.
Lennai: Response
Zol: Some people fought only with the rapier, wielding it with one hand. ::Draws dagger:: Others wielded this little guy in their off-hand, mostly to parry and control the battle. ::Holds it out:: Feel its weight. You can also try a small shield, a buckler. Or be stylish and throw a cloak over your off-hand, use that to try and conceal your movements, or grab the foe's blade - though you might just cut your hand. Anything goes, really.
Arthur was impressed with Zol’s arsenal, but even more impressed by their knowledge of the period.
Strathmore: Experiencing the program with a historian and martial artist will only elevate it. If only you designed it. I took a few liberties.
Lennai: Response
Zol: ::Sheathes weapons:: Are we ready? Oh, one last thing. We're going to bleed and spill blood together - virtually, at least. Are you alright with using our first names?
Strathmore: We can go by our names or our character’s names. I can program it for either.
Lennai: Response
Zol: Response
Arthur typed into the console before saving.
Strathmore: Now we are ready.
Zol/Lennai: Response
Arthur went to get dressed for the part. He replicated a period accurate outfit: a white striped, yellow and orange doublet with a high, ruffed collar. His pants were paned slops with long white stockings or canions with hosen to use the period terminology, ending in black shoes. On his back was a cape that ended at his waist where his rapier was affixed, and, most importantly, flowers were abundant in his hair.
After getting suited up, Arthur returned to his compatriots.
Strathmore: What do you think?
Arthur did a spin before bowing to Zol and Vaysha.
Zol/Lennai: Response
Arthur walked back to the console.
Strathmore: Computer, begin program “The Duel of the Mignons”.
The computer sounded off and the doors of the holodeck opened with a satisfying hisss. Beyond was the Paris of the Early Modern Period. The Parisians of old walked about the horse market that was the setting of the program. The smell was… historically accurate. Behind it, a building no longer in existence, the Bastille. Arthur took a step forward into the simulated past.
