((Main Sickbay, Deck 10, USS Thor))

A quick checkup had turned into an impromptu conversation regarding the oddities of their respective missions, as well as a philosophical dive into an ancient people's outlook on life. This was, really, the way Ay preferred interactions with patients to go.

Sickbay was often a place of contradictions; high traffic yet isolating. So many people came by, but not many of them stayed long enough to really talk, so on the rare occasions where someone was happy to talk about something other than what had brought them there, Ay seized it.

From the sounds of it, the Temple had encouraged a whole new degree of teamwork and personal understanding. It didn’t suffice just to have some familiarity with someone; you had to see and feel the world the way they did.

Meris: May I ask what you plan to inject me with?

Idly, Ay wondered how other members of the crew would react to such a concept, and whether or not it would lead to even more effective teams.

Nera: Just a little something to reduce the discomfort before we remove your 8-legged friend's parting gift.

Loading the local anaesthetic into a hypospray first, he held the device at the ready; as much an opportunity for Meris to decline it should they wish. If the way they’d asked had been anything to go by, Ay had a faint inclination that the pilot would choose to abstain.

Meris: Thank you, but no. ::a pause:: I would prefer not to medicate myself unless it becomes absolutely necessary. I understand an antimicrobial may be needed to countermand any possible infection, but a local anesthetic, by its definition, is generally not required. I would prefer to proceed without it.

Meris seemed to sit at attention on the biobed, arm held at the ready with an impressive degree of steadiness. Offering a small nod of his own, Ay returned the uneeded hypospray to the instrument table.

Nera: Of course! Feel free to take a few moments before we begin. This will be quick, I promise.

Ay flashed a bright smile and began to make a handful of last-minute alterations to the equipment layout, shifting the instruments from one angle to the other on the tray.

Much for his own preparation as it was for Meris’ benefit. It was a small sliver of fang, nothing larger or more complex. If anything, the procedure would be quick and simple, though a moment to breathe before starting was always a wise move.

Meris: I am ready.

With their gaze fixed on a single unmoving point ahead of them, the pilot gave a nod to begin.

Nera: Alright then. Let’s get you defanged! ::frowning slightly:: That sounded way funnier in my head.

Deciding that it was best to move past his terrible humour for the moment, Ay selected the most appropriate tool for the job at hand, something akin to a pair of very slim, very small tweezers, that had an overly complex name he couldn’t remember in the moment. With the tool in his hand and held steady above Meris’ arm, he took a moment to study the scans once more, working out the best angle of approach, the depth needed to retrieve the fang.

It wasn’t too deep, but that didn’t detract from the fact that for a short time, Meris would have to endure someone rooting around in their arm.

Gaze still fixed on the screen, which would track his movements in real-time, Ay lowered the tweezers, sliding them as gently as possible into the angry wound, adjusting the angle ever so slightly.

oO Not too far now. Just need to grab the fang Oo

There was a fine balance to achieve, quick enough to minimise discomfort, but slow enough that he didn’t cause further damage to the area.

Ay paused for a few seconds to allow a tremor running through Meris’ forearm to pass before gently clamping the device into the fang and withdrawing the offending remnant.

Tweezers and fang free of the arm, he set the fang on a specimen dish, no doubt something Science would want to get their hands on, and set the tweezers aside.

Nera: You can relax now, your souvenir has been successfully removed.

He smiled faintly, noting the tension leave the pilot's body almost immediately, as well as the faint track from one eye, indicating a single bit of moisture had run down. Perspiration? Let’s go with that.

Now, just for the finishing touches. A few swipes with the dermal regenerator to close the bite once and for all, and a dose of antimicrobial to deal with any infection that might have set in, while the pilot gave in to their curiosity and took a quick look at the tray.

Meris: Remarkably small, considering the amount of inconvenience it has caused.

Ay hummed in agreement, examining his handiwork. A little bit of swelling and discolouration, but that would fade in time.

Nera: The littlest things can cause us the greatest of harm. You should see the number of infections caused by slinters I used to deal with before signing up ::chuckling:: As of this moment, you’re free to go, though please do pop by in the next few days for a follow-up.

It’d be sensible to get another scan and blood sample at that point, along with a cursory visual examination, to make sure the infection had well and truly been rooted out.

Meris: I appreciate your thoroughness, Doctor.

Meris slid off the biobed and took their still impressively folded jacket in hand, shimmying it back on, as Ay tidied his tools away and sent a brief message to Science, requesting someone come and collect their new biological sample.

Meris: I will endeavor to avoid further contributions to your medical logs.

Was that a joke? If so, the delivery was decidedly Vulcan.

Nera: Oh, please, feel free to contribute to my logs any time, particularly if you have more body swap stories.

Occasionally, Ay felt it necessary to remind the crew that they could swing by for a general gossip; they didn’t need to have a limb falling off or have broken something. Both of those instances, he rather preferred avoiding.

Quick catch-ups? Those he much preferred.
