(( Bridge, Deck 1, USS Thor ))
Lieutenant Commander Morro Caras was doing one of his favorite things. Yapping, jabbering, talking, going off. Caras had a lot of opinions, not a lot of them were strong opinions. Caras had a lot of things he had to relearn and gain perspective on when he first took asylum from Starfleet and the federation. It’s incredible how one's life changes when they are scrapping for their life every day, spending it in forced servitude, and constant imprisonment and enslavement. Caras was told to hold back when his sister had agreed to the deal with Starfleet, she was convinced that they were going to betray them the moment they were no longer useful to the federation. Caras now knew that the perspective he had as a child was still an important one, not to be thrown out, and it was paramount in this discussion about fate. However it was not something he wished on anyone else, but he had witnessed what he considered to be far worse happen to people around him,
Caras: I mean if that’s the case then, Fate is a terrible person and I want nothing to do with them. Fate hasn’t been very kind to me or any of my friends, I’m not sure why I should play by any of its’ “rules”
Despite her stance, Sevantha did not view fate as a being, but a nebulous force that simply was. It was not good or evil. It simply responded to those who challenged their circumstances. Yet, her expression softened sympathetically, as she was well aware of the circumstances in his life that weren’t kind. Sevantha also knew that he included her, Lhandon, Jania, and others in his sentiments.
Tito: I totally agree, Commander. But I don’t believe in fate anymore. I am a man of science. I refuse to have something beyond my control to rule my life. When the unexpected happens I try to make the right decision. I don’t always do but I don’t let Fate set any rules.
Caras wasn’t sure what he believed. He had seen things that couldn’t be explained, and he knew that science had a lot of answers, but it still had more questions. He understood that there was more to the universe than finding answers to questions no one asked. Sometimes it was being at peace with the answers you couldn’t find. Caras hadn’t gotten there yet. He very much wanted to feel the same way Tito did, the fact was he just … couldn’t. That made Caras a little bit restless.
Saa: Yet other forces rule our lives every day with set rules, physics binds us to rules that we must learn and study so we can move beyond them. ::She tilts her head:: How can we say fate is not something that exists in the same way?
Caras did understand that made a kind of sense. But after visiting different universes, different points in time, he wasn’t so sure. He knew that fate wasn’t balanced. Growing up he knew that there were people that existed that would never even be given opportunities of any kind before they died. All they would know was pain. That wasn’t balanced nor did it have any sense other than, people were cruel.
Talyra: Response
Tito: I would be cynical if I say we can completely control our fate. But I quit wondering why or how some unexpected event comes forth and changes one's life.
Caras: I suppose we have sense forces in this world that we still have no control over, even with all of our scientific advances. There are so many things we haven’t been able to master and control, and perhaps that is just another one of them.
Caras didn’t want to start spreading doubt now, but maybe it could change his perspective. He wanted to believe everything happened for a reason. He wanted to believe in a rhyme and reason to the universe. But he couldn’t. He had grown up in a world where there was so much desperation that there was just power, and those too afraid to take it. That was the reality that the Remnants of the Orion syndicate lived by, and the moment you tried to even look out the window at something better, they would blind you. That possibly was too much for them. They were miserable and anyone who was part of their clan would be just as, if not, more miserable than they were.
Talyra: Response
Well that pretty much said it.
Saa: And if fate is truly a force with its rule, would one adhere to the rules or rebel in ways scientists have manipulated the rules of the universe to their advantage for years. ::She looks to Caras:: We wouldn’t have the warp drive if we didn’t learn to do such things would we?
Sevantha finally moved her form away from Morro’s console. He was kind of sad to see her go, but he did want to see how she was eventually going to contend with the hammer.
Tito: Well, if by…. Pardon the redundancy, by fate we ever have Fate in front of us, I would honestly greet Fate with the most human expression.
Caras didn’t know what that was, but he wasn’t human. Neither was Talyra. They all kind of looked blankly at Tito.
Caras: like an idiom?
Caras knew that humans liked to come up with all kinds of idioms to express their situations.
Talyra: Response
Looking up, she tilted her head.
Saa: What human expression would that be, Lieutenant?
Tito smiled, and he looked good doing it. Tito extended his hand and showed the expression.
Tito: I would show Fate my middle finger.
Caras had seen that gesture before in the academy. He had seen people do it to one another excitedly, however he had only a vague awareness of the context. He knew it was a slightly sarcastic gesture.
Saa: Middle finger..? ::tilts head:: What does that mean, why would you greet Fate with it?
Caras greeted Sevantha with his middle finger loud and proud the way he remembered people doing it in the academy.
Saa: Mor- ::correcting:: Mr. Caras, are you making fun of me?
Caras’s expression changed, not exactly to panic but he was a bit on his back foot. He knew this was a thing friends did to one another sometimes.
Caras: No! When someone does it to you you’re supposed to do it back right? Sometimes even with two.
Caras presented a bird in each hand towards Sevantha. She did not reciprocate the gesture however.
Talyra: Response
Caras put his hands down.
The mood had passed, the fun was over and it was back to boring bridge work, however now more than ever, Caras didn’t really have much to do. He supposed he could go over his planning documents and start building the duty schedule next week prep it for submission to the command team. It just seemed weird to work on paperwork on the bridge, but the job was literally to wait.
Saa: Finish those updates, Mr. Caras. ::shakes her head:: Though I will say the riveting discussion of fate was very enjoyable and enlightening, it is always fascinating to learn how others view such unseen forces.
Caras: They are finished ::pause:: Captain. Also agreed.
Caras was trying the term out for Sevantha. It suited her, even if she was only acting captain for now.
Talyra/Tito: Response
Saa: I’m a counselor; it's practically instinct now to hear all sides of a discussion, whether I agree or not. ::She smiles:: And sometimes, to purposely present the counterargument in order to learn the hearts and minds of those around me.
Nothing wrong with that, Caras loved a good discussion. He always wanted to know how his crew felt about a lot of the nuances of the life they had chosen for themselves. A life of service.
Caras: Well not to circle around a bit, but it was a discussion to keep our mind off the dullness of this mission at hand. As I said, no complaints yet, and Fate seems to be holding steady, like the Thor.
Talyra/Tito: Response
Saa: Though, yes, I to some extent do believe in the fate my people speak of. ::She smiles:: But really it's more…every time the q-word is invoked, I end up with a purple heart, and I am really trying to keep my promise to not earn any more.
Caras didn’t think there was any chance of that happening on this mission. He went back to preparing his duty roster submission on the console.
Caras: Well I’ll try my best to not invoke it for the rest of the trip then.
Talyra/Tito: Response
Caras heard a noise come from the command console on the Captain's chair, and from the comm console close to him. Sevantha seemed like she was on it, and so was the duty comm officer. Sevantha was slender enough to eventually move alongside Mjolnir, co-captaining it as it were.
Caras decided to keep the playful banter going
Caras: There is far more blue on the bridge now, more than any other color. I do count the teals with the blues
Caras made a gesture to Sevantha who was still at her console.
Talyra/Tito: response
Caras didn’t really believe in rivalry between the duty posts. If anything he knew it happened more internally in colors, rather than between. Medical fighting for certain supplies with Sciences, or Engineering doing maintenance and running drills from security or operations. But he did like events that encouraged camaraderie.
Caras: I’m not sure what kind of activities that engineering and sciences could go to head in that would be fair. And it can’t be physical, the moment security hears we left them out of something physical, they’ll make us all sorry.
Talyra/Tito: Response
Caras felt a pang of panic come from his partner but didn't know what it was.
Caras looked to the comm officer that had received something the same time Sevantha had sat down.
They seemed to be puzzled over it.
Caras: Mind if I take a look at that, ensign?
Comm Officer: It’s an SOS sir. I think it’s from the Syren’s Song, but something is interesting, it came with a fleet ID.
Caras took one look and realized Sevantha’s panic.
Caras: That’s Captain Promontory’s.
Talyra/Tito: Response
It was time for some kind of action. But what? Nothing else had gone off that they could see. Not yet.
Caras: Sev…. Commander Saa? Orders?
