((The Sonder Room, Nexus Gallery, Deep Space 14))
The evening thus far had been about shifting perspectives with respect to the art — Morro, Sevantha, Josh and Feredo, all offering their own thoughts and reactions to items on display. What hadn’t been apparent to them was just much interaction this exhibit would entail.
Goh: Now, you and you ::pointing to Feredo and Saa:: and you and you ::pointing to Morro and Josh:: will pair up. It’s obvious you know each other to some degree. So now it’s time to take that deeper. Now, hold hands and share something you feel the other may not have noticed in themselves.
Well, Josh thought to himself internally, at least he wasn’t the one forcing them together. Sometimes the gods had a good sense of humour.
Feredo: Sounds like fun!
Of course he thought that; the man seemed up for anything. Morro stretched out his hands, in a somewhat luke-warm manner, gripping Josh’s hands like they were an unwanted gift.
Caras: Ok…. now what?
Saa: (gently) Morro…
Goh: Now share. This is an important part of the exhibit. The art is about finding out how you can connect to one another.
As Caras’ shoulders hunched, accompanied with a large sigh, the commander wondered if the man had any form of a poker face.
Caras: Alright so something I appreciate about you Josh.
It seemed like he was scraping the bucket, particularly when Morro looked toward Sevantha, who seemed wholly focused on Feredo.
As Caras dug, Josh watched Sevantha offer her hands but then pull back slightly.
Saa: Are you alright with a telepath and empath touching you?
Feredo had been so swept up in watching the telenovela unfold to his left between the two men that it took him a second to register what she was saying.
He wasn’t yet intimately familiar with all the Alpha Quadrant species, but he knew the terms she’d mentioned. He doubted she’d be rummaging around for secrets and skeletons, and the lack of participation would likely raise more questions.
So he extended his hands further, resting them gently in hers.
Feredo: (smiling) I guess so!
As Feredo and Sevantha got started, so did Josh and Morro. To the lone human’s surprise, it was the cheng that started things off.
Caras: I don’t think you know how good you are at looking out for others. You have a keen eye and can follow one another's well and I think you have a gut instinct in knowing when to step in, and when to not.
This rang true, given that Josh had been holding back telling Morro he was his own worst enemy. It wouldn’t be productive, particularly in the present company. Instead, he bowed his head in appreciation.
Herrick: Thank you.
As Josh debated which words to choose, Sevantha spoke next.
Saa: Feredo, we have not known each other long, but you appear to challenge Josh’s very nature in a way he needs from time to time. You have an energy about you that invites excitement and adventure, embracing the unknown and unexplored.
In similar fashion, Feredo dipped his head in appreciation. Turning his gaze to Josh, it appeared the first officer was next in the hot seat.
Herrick: Morro, you are a decisive leader who knows how to galvanize the people around you in working towards a common goal that you remain laser focused on. With the added benefit of being able to foster camaraderie with an ease I aspire toward.
Caras: … thanks… that is …actually insightful.::pausing for a long time:: We.. ready to move on to the next one?
And the final one, the three others were tough acts to follow but he pulled on his public speaking skills while offering his genuine observation.
Feredo: Sevantha Saa, you are skilled at navigating boundaries for the benefit of both the individual and the whole -- whether it be offering comfort, a space to be comfortable in, or being comfortable to be around. You lighten the load that folks carry.
While it hadn’t been overtly stated, it was clear that she’d been working hard to keep Morro’s behaviour amenable to the evening.
Saa: I am… surprised by your observation, though maybe I shouldn’t be as you’re quite the skilled diplomat, people are also your purview.
Feredo: Skilled ::winking:: on a good day; thank you.
Observations complete, and curator satisfied, it seemed there was still more to explore.
Goh: If you’ll follow me..
Saa: It is refreshing to view art on board and not have to deal with counterfeits or thefts connected.
Feredo: Counterfeits?
Josh recalled the report that had been filed but was interested to hear a more personal account.
Caras: Response
Saa: Morro and I have had more than a few adventures with art from DS 14 all the way to Cryethrea, forgeries of artists from the Alpha and Beta quadrants have been found. ::She mused a little:: We never get to just enjoy it-
She stopped immediately, as if something has interrupted her.
Herrick: Sevantha?
Caras: Response
Saa: Curator, we are the only guests for the evening correct?
Goh: Yes. ::Gesturing to Feredo:: The preview is an exclusive arrangement as promised.
Josh arched an eyebrow to the man of surprises, who innocently held up his hands and looked around.
Feredo: Attending this exhibit was the only surprise of mine for the evening.
Caras: Response
Herrick: Nor I. This was a pleasant surprise. Am I to take it that you're sensing something, Commander?
Otherwise, why would she ask if they were alone?
Caras/Saa/Goh: Response
That was the benefit of being on a station under the Federation’s control.
Herrick: Good thinking, let’s pull up our surroundings.
Caras/Saa/Goh: Response
It was Feredo who approached the glass and tapped the outline of a room.
