((Transporter Room 1, Deck 1, USS Thor))
Preparation was key in situations with a multitude of unknown elements. Sevantha was also a person who believed in being overly cautious and wasn’t about to send her new Chief Medical Officer and the Security Ensign, who had her name on graduation certificate, inside without a proper review of the situation they faced. They could have taken the Magni and Modi down with the other teams, but Sevantha had asked for more time and for the pattern enhancers on both vessels to support single transport down. She wanted to make sure they had all their supplies ready before taking out. She also intended for them, suited up, to beam right outside the quarantine zone to assure minimum contamination. Once they were on the planet, there was no transport back, they’d have to catch the shuttles, and only after they understood what was happening.
Saa: We need to figure out if this is an actual contagion or something else. Their medical staff were the first known cases and some of those in the worst shape, which means we’re all they have currently. ::She tilts her head:: Any questions before we’re on the ground? ::Pauses and turns to Vharo:: And Ensign, as you’re our security expert, anything you want us to be mindful of as well?
Vharo: Was there anything noted in the original request for assistance that would be of concern besides the agitation symptom?
Nera: Aside from the remoteness, agitation, and unknown contagion you mean? ::pausing, considering:: I would say that sums up the main cause for concern. A quarantine and mysterious illness are stressful enough for the people down there, without adding heightened agitation as an actual symptom. It’s…volatile.
Sevantha listened to Dr. Nera’s explanation and nodded. To add punctuation to his review, the Head of Health produced her own hypospray, already armed with a sedative, as it’d become her default load out when on the job in the Gamma Quadrant.
Vharo: Understood. As for my security concerns, I did have a three part speech on CBRN and exposure protocol but it would be wasted on the pair of you given your professions so I'll hang onto that for the next group. As such, I'll keep it simple. Do try and limit exposure until we have something more then nothing, adhere to the marked biohazard signage and don't wander off with people we don't know without saying anything.
That last part felt very specific, but she understood the necessity of stating it out loud. There were a few crewmen a little too friendly for their own good. Maybe they should station her next to the acting captain. How many kidnappings had he undergone in her time serving with him? Three? Four?
Nera: Noted. We’ll be careful, and defer to your judgement on anything security related ::grinning:: Glad to have you with us
While they spoke, Sevantha had sent for the environmental suits from sickbay which were transported conveniently right into the room.
Saa: ::gestures:: Suit up.
Nera: Has the outpost shared any files related to what they were studying? If so, it could be a good starting point.
Saa: They’re studying the Tangle itself and the number of anomalous things happening. ::She explained:: It’s why the outpost is on the fringes of the Tangle and why the scientists have named the illness, believing they’re associated.
Sevantha was cautious in directly associating their belief with any facts. They were scientists, intelligent and very capable people, but they were not medical doctors.
Vharo: Response
Nera: And what about numbers? Have they indicated how many afflicted there are, and how many people are assigned to the facility as a whole?
Saa: We have thirty scientists stationed, a light contingent of security personnel, a small and now sick medical team of three officers. ::Reviewing her PADD:: We have about ten people down for the count with symptoms… along with missing outpost leadership.
Missing Command was a problem, but it wasn’t their problem to worry about for the moment, despite it was difficult not to question the timing.
Vharo: Response
Nera: And no recent supply ships either I imagine, not this far out…
She shook her head. Finishing suiting up, Sevantha grabbed both a medkit and a sample collecting kit. This was a Federation outpost, they had supplies, but she wasn’t sure how contaminated the environment already was.
Nera: Shall we?
An alert chirped from the transport officer’s station, signaling to the crew that the pattern enhancers were in place to see them down for the one-way trip. Sevantha wished the return trip on the Magni or Modi wouldn't be too crowded. Fully suited up, she stepped onto the transporter pad.
Saa: ::saying quietly:: Four protect us.
Vharo: Response
(( Medical Quarantine, VX-LON-3 Outpost, The Tangle ))
A shower of shimmering blue light reformed the team right outside the Outpost Medical Quarantine. Before they entered, they conducted proper scans and recorded the results for reference later. The trio entered the quarantine area that spread from their tiny sickbay into two nearby labs. Biobeds were occupied with the worst cases, while the most recent infections occupied gurneys, couches, and strewn themselves across chairs. Almost immediately, Sevantha noticed clear signs of nausea on the floor being cleaned up by a small, white roomba-like bot that hovered and rotated like an old Terran UFO saucer while using a sterilization laser grid to remove the mess.
Saa: At least they’re keeping it sterile. ::Looks to Nera:: Start with the most severe cases. ::To Vharo:: See if you can access any security logs from the terminal.
Nera/Vharo: Response
Setting down her medical kit, she plucked up her PADD and assured both Nera and herself had access to the outpost medical files. Vharo wouldn’t have direct access, but she could get her a list of the patients within to begin her search.
Saa: Vharo, you should have the full list of patients to conduct your investigation, while contact tracing would you mind also checking if there were any issues with environmental controls?
Vharo/Nera: Response
Immediately her attention shifted back to the patients, lifting her PADD she reviewed each file and notes attached by the medical team and then whatever crew could help them. Their file details became considerably more general as it became clear the scientists were not quite familiar with proper medical terminology, so she translated.
Saa: ::Reading files:: Most common symptoms reported dizziness, agitation, nausea, vomiting, erratic behavior… less common but still worrisome, confusion, seizures, cardiac arrhythmias, someone at least attempted to take notes.
There were so many viruses that could cause any of these symptoms together, but the agitation, erratic behavior and confusion caused a great deal of concern. Could prolonged exposure to the tangle cause that sort of development? Surely, there'd be other notable signs like elevated radiation levels or excess chroniton particles, but nothing had been reported.
Dutifully, the hovering slightly off axis robot found another pile of expelled content and started cleaning, causing Sevantha to look up in realization.
Saa: Wait, we need to scan the contents just in case, computer, stop cleaning for a minute.
The tiny bot hovered in place, lost, purposeless, and waiting. Spinning round and round in the air, beeping unevenly as it waited.
Vharo/Nera: Response
