Anticipation and expectancy are the downpayment on the elation that we believe will flow out of a momentous event. In many ways, our joy is doubled. There is delight in the waiting and watching. Then, there is satisfaction in doing and having.
(( Bridge, Deck 1, USS Thor ))
Sasch kept herself from sprinting, skipping, or traveling from the turbolift to the flight control station by any means that would have drawn undue attention to herself. So instead, she calmly walked from the turbolift to her place at the conn. But that didn’t mean that her insides weren’t giddy with excitement over getting to take the ship out of station-keeping and to fly it using the QSD drive.
She had already had - an abbreviated - talk with the drive. She couldn’t imagine that it was going to give them any problems, but new colleagues could sometimes be problematic until they got to know each other and earned each other’s trust. Even if that were the case, while her exterior maintained a highly professional demeanor, her insides were dizzy with excitement.
She had already memorized the exact sequence of the QSD preflight checks. One by one she went through them, but her eyes caught the Ready Room door opening, and Sasch got a glimpse of the Captain. He nodded politely at her, and she returned the gesture before going back to her checks.
Promontory: Mr. Caras, I believe the alcove in the back is set-up for full engineering monitoring with the holotable already displaying the QSD. Mr. Tam, you’re welcome to join him there or take the main ops station.
Caras: Aye sir.
Since their … introduction near the QSD core, whenever Sasch heard the name Caras or saw the Orion engineer, the Russian still fought to keep the ruddiness from her face. The situation was embarrassing enough the first time. She wished she could keep herself from replaying it every time they encountered one another again. But out of her periphery, the Helmswoman caught the fact that Moro didn’t move. When she swivelled herself around a little to see why, she caught sight of a large hammer - supposedly Thor’s hammer in the chair that the Captain was approaching.
Sasch looked between the Captain and the Engineer and back to the Captain before a barely audible phrase escaped her lips.
Kreshkova: Oh my.
Tam: Response
As Trake Promontory arrived at his destination he was met with a large, bulky, supposedly heavy, obstacle of epic proportions (at least a literary proportions)
Sasch watched as the Captain paused in front of the seat. It didn’t take a Betazoid to guess what was going through his mind. Her lips pressed together in a failed attempt to keep the mirth off of her face.
Watch Officer: Sorry sir, no one seems able to move it.
Sasch watched as the Captain steeled himself, and after taking hold of the handle, he pulled with such force that he nearly lost his balance as it hadn’t been heavy at all. At that, she turned around quickly. While she was sure that if the Captain was worth his salt that he would laugh it off, but she preferred that he didn’t catch her laughing - at him.
Promontory: Well, now that’s out of the way, let’s get on with the mission.
From there, everyone seemed to settle into their tasks.
Caras: QSD functional nominal captain. Standing by for initial use.
Still just slightly grinning, Sasch swiveled her chair around to look at Promontory as she said…
Kreshkova: Preflight checks done. Everything is green across the board, Captain.
Tam: Response
Promontory: Alright. Is everyone ready to bend the fabric of space to your will? Then let’s trip the light fantastic. (stretching out his hand) Mr. Kreshkova, Forward!
Sasch drew a slow breath as she keyed in the command. Everyone else seemed to be feeling the anticipation of the momentous occasion. With one final tap of her finger, they jumped into the slipstream. While she couldn’t hear everyone’s exhale, something in her soul resonated with the soundless release of their held breaths.
Kreshkova: Ve’ve successfully entered the slipstream, Sir.
Tam: Response
Caras: =^= Engineering, resume standard operations =^=
Caras: I’m hoping for a smooth voyage, because I'm pretty sure whenever we get to our destination we’re going to find a handful of things that are probably going to be dire.
Kreshkova: Let’s hope not since zhe QSD drive vill need at least zhirty-six hours to cool and recharge.
Promontory/Tam: Response
Caras: Has Starfleet science even determined the true cause for the Tangle’s expansion? I can’t help but feel… a little responsible.
Sasch wasn’t sure what Caras was referring to, but she knew this was not the place to ask that question.
Kreshkova: Fortunately, ve von’t be flying zhrough zhe Tangle zhis time. Ve vill be just skirting outside of its edges.
Promontory/Tam: Response
Caras: Not being able to use the slipstream anywhere near the tangle seems like being given psychic powers, and then only being able to play poker with androids. As an Orion pirate captain once said to me, you might as well tie the rope around your legs, because you’re going to be crawling anyway.
Without turning around Sasch raised her eyebrows at his statement. She tried to picture the Orion bound crawling across a carpet - maybe that was what she needed not to think of his interrupting her conversation with the drive. She nodded to herself as she might just have sprung upon her answer.
Caras: What? I lived, and the ropes actually saved me from rug burn. The only Orion captain I knew with carpets.
Kreshkova: ::throwing the comment over her shoulder:: Vell, at least ve haf hard floors here.
Promontory/Tam: Response
Kreshkova: Starfleet obviously believes zhese rumors about Humans from Earzh on zhese two planets. I’m sure zhey vouldn’t be sending us if zhey didn’t believe their credibility. Do ve know where zhe rumors came from?
Tam/Promontory/Caras: Response
Kreshkova: I also zhink zhe spacial dynamics of having two class M planets near to each ozher must be a fascinating undertaking.
Tam/Promontory/Caras: Response
Kreshkova: It’s not zhat it’s just unusual, but each not only affects zhe fabric of space, but also zhe ozher planet. I haf zhe coordinates, but I’d to get a look at zheir stellar layout before ve actually arrive.
Tam/Promontory/Caras: Response
