Tito blinked and leaned back. He slowly rubbed the bridge of his nose, to hide the annoyance and frustration for another failure.
They were working on reproducing Lieutenant’s Morro success during the mission.
But regrettably they had not yet managed to reproduce the same results.

Failure was part of the learning process, and the scientific method.
Tito was very aware of that. But after the first twenty simulations it was starting to lose it’s amusement.

He sensed that even Commander Herrick was getting a little… Tired to say the least.

Herrick: Not again. ::beat:: What number are we on now?

Ral: Twenty-Four so far.  The shuttles power systems just simply aren’t powerful enough to channel enough energy to the shields.

Tito: There must be something we are still missing.

Herrick: We need to turn this upside down a bit, see if there's a different way to deflect it, as I'm unsure the shields will be adequate to handle a blast just opposite the shields without a total redesign of the vessel.

Ral: We could change the warp field geometry to create a sort of subspace nullifier zone.  By extending this as far as possible we could effectively create a “dead zone” where subspace weapons cannot propagate. The idea is to collapse the subspace layers locally so they are not disrupted by the explosion.

Tito tipped his head to the left as he looked at Lieutenant Ral

Tito: That will form a warp bubble outside safety limits… It's a risk but we can try it.

They had nothing to lose, and after maybe test twenty five would be the one they got it.

Herrick: Alright, let's feed the new parameters in and go for another round.

Ral: If we can make this work for the shuttle the Thor could produce a much larger dead zone.

Tito felt that Ral was being a little too optimistic, but he nodded.
Tito: Let's not jinx it and see if it works first on the little ones, before we push it to the big ship.

As Ral set things up Tito kept his scans running and waited for the upcoming weapon fire.

Herrick: Response

Again they were attacked and the enemy came into view. Lieutenant Ral set up the warp bubble as Tito kept an eye on the scans.

Ral: Warp bubble geometry reconfigured. Subspace layers collapsing... field integrity holding at 82%.

Tito: Enemy arming weapon… They opened fire.

This time there was no impact. At least yet. Tito raised his head from the Science console.

Herrick: Response

Ral: There’s a small harmonic distortion but nothing to worry about.

Tito sank back to his console confirming the scans and recent readings.

Tito: So far so good.

Suddenly the alert klaxons rang and the computer spoke faster than Tito.

Computer: Warp field asymmetrical compression ratio exceeded safe harmonic thresholds. Evacuate ship.  Warp core breach in thirty seconds.

Ral tapped frantically on his console as Tito's shoulder sank.
Another failure. Or it looked like they were heading to it again.

Ral: The core’s magnetic containment is destabilizing. Attempting to compensate.

Herrick: Response

Computer: Warp core breach in ten seconds.

Tito shrugged. They certainly weren’t making number twenty five a hit, so there was nothing to lose anyway.

Tito: Let’s eject the core… And run twenty six?

Herrick/Ral: Response

Tito arched an eyebrow as he thought of something.

Tito: Wait, no, now really… Let’s eject the core and blow it up…

Herrick/Ral: Response

He turned to both Commander Herrick and Lieutenant Ral, fully ignoring the efforts to save themselves. For Tito twenty five was already a burst, but Ral had an interesting idea when he widened the warp bubble

Tito: I know its a zero survival probability but why don’t we start working first on containing the weapon? Then we work on surviving. Expanding the warp bubble worked for a moment, why don’t we focus on that, but before it get’s out of hand we fire upon it? ::Tito gestured around the simulated shuttle.:: I mean, it’s not like we are able to contain it with the Odin’s warp engine…

Herrick/Ral: Response
