((Holosuite 4, USS Thor))
In the beginning all was formless, empty, and dark.
The holosuite stood silent, its arch dark, its grid unlit. Internal buffers cycled at idle capacity. Environmental emitters remained dormant. Narrative processors were queued but inactive. The presence of a biosign at the arch activated the holomatrix subprocessors. A program was manually input.
//Setting initialized. USS Invicta. Cardiff-class. NCC-81407. Main Bridge. Circa 2395.
The subprocessors engaged and a painstakingly accurate representation of the bridge of the Invicta materialized within the holosuite.
Commander DeVeau entered the holodeck.
//Recognize Commander Alora DeVeau. Chief Science Officer, USS Thor. Heart rate normal. Respirations normal. Blood pressure normal.
The computer monitored Commander DeVeau as she surveyed the bridge. Two additional biosigns entered.
//Recognize Lieutenant Commander Naledi. Director of Strategic Operations, USS Thor. Heart rate normal. Respirations normal. Blood pressure normal.
//Recognize Lieutenant Vitor Tito. Science Officer, USS Thor. Heart rate normal. Respirations normal. Blood pressure normal.
The holodeck processed rank reassignments. Naledi designated Captain. Tito designated First Officer. DeVeau rank reduced to Ensign for simulation parameters and assigned to Science. Variables adjusted accordingly.
Simulation awaiting command prompt.
DeVeau: Computer, start the simulation.
//Command recognized. Program executing.
An ambient hum filled the air calibrated to Cardiff-class specifications. Holographic crew populated the bridge at optimal operational density. External environment rendered.
//Setting. Alpha Quadrant. The Badlands. Plasma density variance introduced at 37% fluctuation. Sensor reliability reduced within training tolerances. Distress signal embedded at low power. Vessel coordinates randomized. Source masked by interference algorithms Bravo-3-1-Barclay.
//Helm input received. Warp five.
Stars elongated into streaks of light. Intelligence query returned null hostile reports. Navigational hazard probability increased in proximity bands. Sickbay preparation logged. Casualty probability variable but non-zero. Shuttle readiness acknowledged and integrated as alternate branch.
Upon crossing the Badlands threshold, interference coefficients increased incrementally. Visual clarity reduced. Sensor returns destabilized within programmed oscillation ranges. Beyond a plasma column, silhouette geometry resolved. Xindi-Insectoid vessel identified. Distress beacon sustained. Communications degradation initiated.
//Antagonist search begun. Reviewing Lieutenant Commander Naledi personnel record. Searching. Background analysis complete. Subject history indicates early social isolation, documented fascination with militaristic Xindi history, anger rehabilitation through conflict-resolution training, prior Security and Intelligence specialization, current Strategic Operations command track, species Xindi-Insectoid, Federation-aligned upbringing. Identified stress vectors include species loyalty conflict, ideological extremism, hatchery survival imperative, historical grievance aligned with Reptilian alliance era. Antagonist parameters compiling.
((Bridge, USS Invicta))
Holosuite 4 registered elevated cognitive engagement across three primary participants. Environmental instability remained within projected ranges. Visual confirmation of a Xindi-Insectoid vessel triggered measurable attention shifts though command posture remained stable.
Tito: Get more power to comms and adjust the line, compensate for the interference with noise reduction.
Naledi: Response
DeVeau: Yes sir.
Commander DeVeau redirected power and adjusted frequencies. Manual override efficiency logged. Audio fragments of Xindi phonetics detected.
//Accessing Commander DeVeau personnel record. Communications proficiency rating 4.2 out of 10 under degraded conditions. Adjusting assistance parameters within evaluation thresholds. Increasing communications stability by 27%. Audio clarity improved. Visual integrity remains compromised.
Tito: Recognize any word Captain?
Naledi: Response
DeVeau: We’ll continue to try and clean that up.
Commander DeVeau coordinated with Communications Officer Beta-Three.
//Teamwork metric increased. Social coordination index elevated by 14%. Training objective reinforcement. Communications stability increased an additional 11%.
Tito repositioned near science. Oversight behavior detected. Signal coherence improving.
Tito: I assume we can’t get a lock on them, right?
DeVeau: I’m afraid not.
Communications lock attempt registered. Failure confirmed.
//Negative result accepted from proctor. Maintaining interference at 62%. Objective reinforcement. Decision-making under incomplete control preserved.
DeVeau: Still trying to clear everything up.
Manual recalibration detected. Frequency harmonics aligned.
//Reward condition met. Visual interference reduced by 19%. Audio packet loss decreased to 34%.
//Antagonist resolved.
Onscreen silhouette of Xindi-Insectoid lifeform acquired. Monochromatic rendering maintained.
Tito: Interesting...
Naledi: Response.
Signal degradation event triggered. Plasma surge variance increased by 12%. Image integrity reduced to zero.
Dual-station correction executed. Visual channel restored to 63% clarity. Audio stabilized.
DeVeau: There, I think that should do it, but I don’t know how long we will be able to sustain this clarity.
The Xindi-Insectoid appeared clad in black armor. Mandibles tightened before speaking.
Ch'zila: Snap Crick Hiss Chirp... I am Junior Command Officer Ch'zila. Third of the Scout Ship Shra'Tik. Our vessel struck a plasma column. Damage... My First and Second… wounded. We require assistance.
Ch'zila’s compound eyes reflected flickers of plasma fire across the failing bridge of the Shra'Tik. Internal systems reported cascading power failures. Hatchery containment shields fluctuated.
Naledi/Tito: Response
//Linguistic analysis engaged. Dialect cluster 14-Gamma identified. Universal Translator overlay initiated. Original acoustic structure preserved at 82% fidelity.
DeVeau: Maybe next time.
//Statement unrelated to active threat parameter. Disregarded.
Ch'zila: Crick Crack Snap Hiss... Our engines failed. Navigational systems unresponsive. I am unable to reach all sections of the Shra'Tik.
Behind Ch'zila, sparks cascaded from ruptured conduits. Warning lights pulsed along bulkheads. Plasma vectors recalculated. Environmental collision probability rising.
Naledi/Tito: Response
//External object status. Drift at 0.02 impulse. Plasma density severe. Communications degradation probability high.
Static intensified.
DeVeau: Adjusting!
Ch'zila: Pop Pop Crick Snap... Federation vessel... plasma vectors shifting. Collision probability increasing. We cannot stabilize. Hatchery disengaging. We will launch our brood pod… protect it. This is our continuation.
A section of the Shra'Tik separated on the viewscreen. The brood pod detached and maneuvering thrusters ignited. The pod drifted toward the Invicta with minimal propulsion.
Within the pod, dozens of eggs pulsed with faint bioelectric activity. Shield integrity fluctuated at 41%.
Naledi/Tito: Response.
