Aron was uncertain.

Not about what he was about to do. No, he was quite certain about the promotions he was about to grant and the ribbons he was about to award. When it came to his crew and their performance, he had no second thoughts and no regrets.

This was entirely about him. They were a strong crew, one of the strongest he’d ever worked with. They deserved a commanding officer who was strong and sure, and after what had happened on New Bajor, he didn’t know if that was him.

He’d been so certain, so certain, that going to talk to the governor in person was the right thing to do, the smart thing to do, the Starfleet thing to do.

And if he was wrong about that, what else might he be wrong about?

He didn’t have any more time to reflect on himself, though, as his door chime rang and he called for whoever was on the other side -- though he had a shrewd idea he knew who it was -- to come in. He was right, and he greeted Teller.

Kells: Geoff. Are you ready for our tour of the ship?

Geoff, resplendent in his dress whites, still didn’t have the faintest clue what Fleet Captain Kells had up his sleeve. Geoff had spent enough time working with the man over the past year to get a sense of his moods, and right now the Captain seemed oddly pensive, and it was translating into a sort of nervous energy that kept him in near constant motion. Geoff knew the feeling well, and suspected the Captain’s injury and long convalescence had left him a bit stir crazy.

Teller: Of course, sir, but if you wanted to go for a jog I think we could’ve dispensed with the whites. ::Geoff brushed at his collar where a stray piece of confetti, a souvenir of his ‘initiation,’ was still somehow embedded.:: Though to be fair we do look pretty snappy. So, how would you like to do this?

Kells: Oh, I thought we’d do it a little differently this time. Mix things up a little. I know where the senior staff is, as well as some officers and crew I’d like to recognize for their efforts, thanks to the computer. I thought we’d surprise them rather than calling everyone together.

Geoff smirked, enjoying the idea. His promotions had been strictly formal affairs, even the one that had occurred on a tropical beach when he was in a tattered uniform.

Teller: Sounds good to me, sir, just promise I can throw a few ribbons at people as we go running by. ::Geoff’s smirk deepened:: There’s a few people I know I’d love to decorate.

Kells: Though before we start…

Aron had already prepared the fernwood box, which was to say that it was filled with ribbons, metals, and a special box-within-a-box of pips. It was significantly fuller than normal.

Kells: I have something for you, Commander.

Aron cleared his throat and spoke with his captain’s voice. The voice was easy to inhabit, and that gave Aron a bigger confidence boost than he’d expected.

Geoff paused, momentarily perplexed.

Teller: Sir?

Kells: Well, first, something from me. Me, as in your captain, but also me specifically. (beat) That was confusing. But you know what I mean:

Aron removed a deep red ribbon.

Kells: I’m your captain, so I’m commending you. You did an excellent job, Geoff, both down there and up here, whether you were leading an away team or captaining the ship. The Thor’s in good hands when those hands are yours.

Again Aron hesitated. That hadn’t come out exactly as he wanted, but never mind.

Teller: Thank you sir...the ribbon means a lot. Your faith in me means a lot more.

Aron removed a second ribbon, this time with silver and black striped together.

Kells: I’m sure you’ve seen this before. Roshanara says the Shoals were full of pirates. I didn’t expect to see any on this mission, but then I didn’t expect to see anything but a regular delivery of supplies on this mission. Expect the unexpected, I guess. Especially when “the unexpected” is “pirates.”

Geoff smiled, the ribbon triggering an odd sentimentality.

Teller: An operation Safe Harbor ribbon. Thought I’d seen my last one of those when I left the ‘Tas.

Aron handed both ribbons over, and knew that Geoff would shortly add them -- or their star equivalents -- to his impressive service record and the rack of ribbons he’d accumulated.

Now, time to do the same for others.

Kells: Ready to head out?

Geoff slipped the ribbons into his jacket and nodded.

Teller: Absolutely sir, lead the way.

Kells: Great. First stop, Stellar Cartography.
