((All character thoughts and actions belong solely to Sasch and Ash))

((Bridge, Deck 01, USS Thor))

The burden of the commands she had given, of the thoughts she entertained, the concerns that she silently carried during these few moments, pushed Sasch backward into the Captain’s chair.  She barely sat on the edge, but she allowed - at least her lower muscles - a brief respite from the weight she carried.

Kreshkova: Captain Vinters, figure out vhat zhat ozher ship is tactically capable of, and find a vay to be ready for it.

Winters: Aye sir.

Orlon, A.: With the extra power, Ah’m workin’ on boosting our sensor capability inside the tidepool.

Roe: You're welcome.

Ash gave her husband a wink.

Meris: Captain Kreshkova, the Magni is now aboard.

Winters: Tactical analysis of the hostile vessel Commander. Twenty-one weapon ports. High yield energy output. Defensive shielding appears to be some form of tri-layered absorption shielding technology. Based on what I am seeing, we're outgunned and our shields won't keep us in a fight long against their weapons energy levels. I know a few tricks with shields that could buy us a few more minutes in a fight but not much more.

Kreshkova:  Vintners, I’ll take vhatever tricks you have up your sleeve, down your pant leg, or even hidden in your hair.  And Commander and Lieutenant Orlon, just promise me zhat zhe two of you won’t make googly eyes at each ozher if ve get into a firefight.  Da?

Ash flushed crimson, but swallowed hard and gave a pert nod.

Ash:  Aye, Captain.

Sasch allowed herself a moment to watch the spectacle in front of them.  Two disabled ships, another on the move, and a beautifully undulating spectral light display consumed their viewscreen.  It also cast moving cascades of color and shadow across the bridge as the various hues penetrated their space.  If Sasch hadn’t been so worried about the people who were missing, she might even have found the tidepool hypnotic.

Meris: Captain, while aboard the Magni we gathered samples of space from within the tidepool and returned them to the shuttle for analysis. Our intent was to compare those samples against local space to determine whether the region inside the anomaly originated from another dimension. We were pulled into the studio world before we could complete the work. Now that the samples are aboard the Thor, we can finish that analysis.

Winters: How does knowing where this anomaly came from help us get the Captain and our crew back? Shouldn't we be focused more on a rescue plan rather than studying this anomaly?

A cold breeze seemed to hit Sasch from behind, tracing a visible shiver down her spine.

Kreshkova:  I am focused on getting our crew back, Captain.  I promise.  Meris, please haf someone from Science obtain and analyze zhe samples.  Mister Orlon, I vant you to ascertain if ve can safely beam our people aboard from zhe ships on zhis side of zhe tidepool.  I also vant you to see if you are able to open an effective communications channel to any of our people on zhis side of zhe tidepool.

Ash: Even with the extra power, Ah’m still’na able ta get a clear reading on the other side of the pool, Captain.

Meris: I will have someone in the shuttlebay recover the samples and bring them to the science labs immediately.

Winters: Commander, with all due respect. Our number one priority should be the Captain and crew's recovery. Diverting resources to study where this anomaly came from, sounds great but is it the best use of our resources?

Sasch took a deep breath.  It could have been considered too long or too indulgent, but it gave her time to gather her frazzled wits.  When she spoke, her words were calm and even, without a trace of the niggling irritation that grated against her spirit.

Kreshkova:  Captain Vinters, Your objection will be noted in my log.  Not zhat I owe you an explanation, but so you can better focus, if ve understand zhe differences between zheir space and our space, and can make necessary modifications to bridge zhose differences, our sensors vill more effectively see inside zhe tidepool, vhich vould also render our transporters more effective vhen it comes time to get our people out.  Correct me if I’m wrong, Commander Orlon.

Orlon, A.:  Aye, Captain, ye’re right.

Sasch gave a nod and, turning her head slightly, noticed a slight nod of the Marine Captain in response. oO Good.  Zhere’s enough going on outside, I don’t need a fight on zhe bridge too. Oo

She allowed herself a slight shift back further into the chair - it might have contained a bed of nails as comfortable as it was to sit in.

Meris/Roe: Response.

Winters: Understood.

Kreshkova:  Lieutenant Orlon, see if you can locate any member of zhe Command Staff on eizher of zhose ships.

Meris/ Roe: Response.

Winters: Commander, has anyone determined what it is that these aliens used to render us all unconscious at the drop of a hat? We need to be able to defend against that if we are to try and stay in sustained engagement with these guys.

Kreshkova:  I haf zhought of it, and I am open to any suggestions, but I’m vondering if zhe answers to zhat are also in zhat container obtained by zhe Magni.  Anyzhing on zhat front from down below?

Ash checked her messages.

Orlon, A.: Nay yet, Captain.

Meris/Roe: Response.

Just then, Sasch noticed something emerging from behind the Pirate ship, followed by a second something.

Kreshkova:  Vinters, report.  Vhat am I looking at?

Winters/Meris/Roe: Response

Kreshkova:  Based on zheir trajectory, vhere do you zhink zhey are headed?

Winters/Meris/Roe: Response

Kreshkova:  Meris, please put us between zhe Syren’s song and zhat shuttle.  Mister Orlon, vhezher ve zhink zhey can hear us or not, please inform zhem zhat to board eizher zhe Janaran or zhe Syren’s Song vill be considered a hostile act, and ve vill take action.

Winters/Meris/Roe: Response
