((Crew Cockpit, USS Odin))

They had completed two trips to New Gaia to drop off nearly thirty people there.  And this was the end of their second trip to Nova Terra.  To this point, everything had gone off smoothly.  Mentally, Sach waited for the … ‘but.’  Were they already caught unaware in a spider’s web?  Was there a person or entity ready to pounce at their first misstep?  The Russian tried to brush the feeling off, but it clung to her spirit like a child refusing to release its mother.

Kreshkova:  I’ll be setting us down outside of zhe town, so ve attract less attention.

Tito: That is always a good choice.

With only two passengers left, Sasch had suggested that Henry and Viola join them in the Odin’s cockpit.

Viola:  You’ll still likely attract some attention.

Henry:  Yeah, but despite being aware of you, they’ll probably be wary of any ship setting down near the town.

Kreshkova:  Do zhe two of you ::Sasch craned her head around toward Viola and Henry:: live near each ozher?  And if so, which part of town is closest to you bozh?

Viola:  Yeah.  We live in the same section of the city.  We were both out working our plots of land when we were pressed into service.

Henry rolled his eyes at his compatriot.  She was great at giving out information, but didn’t always answer the question she was asked.

Henry:  We’re on the southeast side of the river.  So if you set down… ::Henry stood from his seat and made his way to Sasch’s side, pointing out an area.:: Over there, that’ll be close enough to our homes.

The man’s whole face lit up like a neon sign broadcasting to the entire complement how much he was in love.

Henry: I can’t wait to see Sophie and Anabeth again.

Tito: Maybe we can visit? It’s my first time down, I was on the team that beamed to New Gaia.

Kreshkova:  Da.  I zhink ve should.  ::Glancing back at their two visitors quickly before turning back to the viewscreen, Sasch asked…:: Do eizher of you haf suggestions as to vhere ve might get some food and maybe friendly conversation about zhe area?

Viola:  Yeah.  There’s a tavern in town.  There’s always a lot of people in there. Many will be willing to talk to primary humans.  ::She cast a wary glance at Naledi.  She had never seen a life-size insect before their trip back to Nova Terra.::  It’s near the river on the south side.

Henry:  Or there’s the hotel on the other side of the river.  It has a really nice restaurant, but you’re more likely to engage someone in conversation at the tavern.  ::Turning to the other human Lieutenant:: I’ve never been to New Gaia.  What was your trip there like?

Naledi:  Response

Tito: It could have gone better. They have an interesting concept of society… ::he didn’t want to share too much with strangers onboard, so he turned to the other Lieutenant.:: Lieutenant Naledi have you stayed on board or were you with any of the teams?

Naledi:  Hiss Snap Crack Pop Twinge

Sasch tilted her head toward Naledi, though she kept her eyes on the viewscreen

Kreshkova: Lieutenant?   I’m sorry, I didn’t understand you.

Voila shifted in her seat, but Henry turned to face the insectoid.  He was fascinated.

Henry: So that’s what you sound like without a translator?

Tito:  Response

Sasch heard the chirp of a combadge go off, and guessed that Naledi was turning theirs on.

Naledi: Hiss Snap Crack Pop Twinge Clank Snap… My Apologies, Lieutenant. Universal Translation needed to speak. My species undergoes hibernation annually. I just woke up a few hours ago.

Kreshkova:  I always feel groggy after a long nap, I can’t imagine vhat it’s like coming out of hibernation.

Henry: Fascinating.

Viola hit Henry on the arm.  She turned to look at where Sasch was heading. She, too, was glad to be home, even if it meant being there alone.  It would be nice to be in her own bed tonight.

Tito:  Response

Naledi: Snap Pop Crick Hiss… It’s alright. It only lasts for a week, and I don’t require sleep for the remainder of the year. My species is able to survive on short power-naps until our time comes, but we remain fully aware in that time. An evolutionary mechanism related to our reduced lifespan.

((Nova Terra, Outskirts of Hudson))

Sasch hovered the shuttle over the spot that Henry had pointed out several minutes ago and set it down gently.  She took an extra moment to secure her station before standing.

Kreshkova:  Vhile I’m sorry ve had to meet under zhese circumstances, I’m glad I got a chance to meet you bozh.

Viola:  It was nice to meet you, Lieutenant Kreshkova, and you, Lieutenant Tito.

While she didn’t address Naledi, at least she had the civility to nod at them.

Henry: ::To Naledi:: Forgive my friend.  She’s not used to anyone who isn’t human, but I’m pleased to have met you. ::To all of those in uniform:: All of you! But you’ll forgive me if I want to get back to my wife and my daughter!  ::To Kreshkova:: Is it okay if we go?

Tito:  Response

Kreshkova: Of course.  You are bozh free to go.

Sach walked the two of them over to the door of the shuttle and opened it for them.  Henry and Viola quickly took off toward the town.  Henry waved over his shoulder, but Viola kept on walking.

Tito/Naledi: Response

Kreshkova:  So of zhe two locations zhat they mentioned, zhe tavern seems like zhe best place to strike a conversation, get some food, and maybe some intel at zhe same time… Unless eizher of you haf ozher zhoughts.

Being in charge of her ‘older brother’ felt really weird.  It wasn’t that Sasch was second-guessing herself, but they were all the same rank.  Tito had even been a Lieutenant longer than she had, and the pilot had no idea how long Naledi had been a Lieutenant.

She took in a short breath, puffed it out, and tried to smile.

Tito/Naledi:  Response

Kreshkova:  ::Sasch started to a side locker as she spoke.::After our last encounter here, I suggest zhat ve take sidearms vizh us.  Zhough, it should go vizhout saying, zhey stay on stun unless ozhervise ordered.

The Russian input her code, and once it beeped in acknowledgement and popped open, she handed out a phaser to each of the others.

Tito/Naledi: Response
