((Sickbay Complex, Deck 10 - USS Ronin))
Consciousness returned to Soldu tr’Kharis in fragments. At first there was only sensation. A dull tightness in his chest. A slow rhythmic beeping somewhere nearby. Cool air moving across his face. Then a distant pain arrived, but it remained far away. He could hear someone breathing happily near his ear.
A voice reached him from slightly outside of his skull.
Aduko: Shodar?! You look...terrible. ::Smiling.::
oO I suppose I’m not dead then. But he would follow me to Erebus, the crazy son of an Orion slave girl! Oo
He opened his good eye. A white ceiling with soft lighting drifted into focus. Medical equipment hummed quietly around him. He inhaled deeply. That had been a mistake.
tr'Kharis: ::raspy:: Uhhh, ohoo!
Somewhere beside his head a stool scraped loudly across the floor, a noise that seemed to vibrate directly through his skull. Aduko settled himself beside the biobed with a contented rustle of clothing.
Soldu creakily turned his head. For several seconds he simply studied the Orion in silence, his vision swimming slightly as the room stabilized.
tr'Kharis: ::dry, gravelly:: It warms what remains of my shriveled heart to know you noticed my appearance has deteriorated. I am touched by your concern… truly. Did they brief you on the status of our personnel and the Lid?
Aduko: I heard the news, yes. ::He let out a heavy sigh.:: Good and bad, but mostly good...in my opinion. I also heard you took on one of the warrior caste...
Soldu lifted a hand and met a restraining field shimmered faintly over the biobed like a transparent cage.
tr'Kharis: The rumours of my descent into madness have been exaggerated. I had hoped my… improvisation… would not result in the destruction of this vessel. I merely distracted the creature to give the Starfleet warriors the upper hand. It was the only way I could think of to stop it short of an orbital bombardment. It seems they didn’t approve of my method, but I can’t really blame them. ::gaze sharpening:: What about you Joakim? Are you being treated for injuries here?
Aduko shook his head immediately.
Aduko: No no, I'm here to see you, my friend. So at least answer me this first - how are you doing?
The old Romulan rolled his head around, glanced down, half surprised to find all his limbs intact. His breathing was easier now, the pain of his injury more of an echo.
tr'Kharis: ::measured:: It appears that I am alive…::deep breath:: maybe even better than I have felt in a long time.
Aduko: Response
Soldu’s lips curved faintly.
tr'Kharis: Even confined here… free of the Lattice’s web… I already feel freer than I have in years. But what of the base personnel? How many made it out?
Aduko: Response
Soldu closed his eye for a moment, nodding.
tr'Kharis: Unfortunate, but acceptable losses. That so many were rescued and relatively unharmed is more than I would have thought possible.
Aduko: Response
tr'Kharis: I have not yet spoken to the Captain, but the Human warrior, the one Senior Chief Solana reports to assured me that they will help our peoples medical needs.
A wailing cry drifted through the ward, followed by a cacophony of trills, frankly rude noises as a familiar Jem’Hadar form entered from another room. Silence returned as the doors closed on the noises. It sounded strangely like a clutch of mewling ter’ak*.
Soldu cast a questioning glance at his…now former second in command as if to say “what was that?” as his other former employee strode across the deck to join them.
Rurat’dari/Aduko: Response
tr'Kharis: …Infants? How many of them?
Rurat’dari/Aduko: Response
