(( Secret Tunnel, Caretaker's Nodule, The Reef ))
The jaunt to explore a strange mural had turned into something far more adventurous than simply examining brush strokes. Xilva carefully cradled the strange sphere and made a quick scan of its properties before settling it back carefully into the water - she could experiment in the lab with a synthetic model as long as she had the right chemical composition. The more they tunneled through the Reef, the more curious she grew - and she had a feeling that this was a mystery that she'd be puzzling over for decades.
Nakada: :: excitedly :: I think you’re right! :: pausing at water :: The chemical balance in this water – cant believe I didn’t see it earlier – nitrates, oxygen, this even looks like a protein! This water is basically a nutrient rich medium!
Nakada: Do you think we’re inside a giant lab? Those may not be real – :: glancing at the glowing figures :: but you could make something in this.
Marsek: ::thoughtfully:: A giant lab isn't a bad hypothesis. You could be right - but it also feels like a museum, or a memorial - but who's to say the Caretakers didn't just utilize spaces in ways that we wouldn't think of?
Perhaps their labs really were also memorials to the first time that they were able to create life successfully, then over and over again - even being able to develop the ability to reproduce within the cosmozoans. There were thousands of possibilities, and Xilva felt an overwhelming curiosity to explore each one and figure out just what everything meant. Even if it led to a terrifying and deadly situation, the need to know was overpowering.
oO Not letting anyone think for a -second- that Starfleet may have been right about this stupid science placement, though. Because they weren't, obviously. Oo
She joined Keneth in patrolling the border around the forest and looked for any kind of well-worn path or trail that could indicate a way through. This was strange, everything had a way out so far...
Nakada: Well I still don’t see a way out.
Marsek: Me neither. Well, if we can't go under it and can't go around it, guess we've got to go through it.
Nakada: It’s a fair guess it’s somewhere in there.
Xilva paused as a shrill whistling noise whipped through her ears. She winced and quickly turned her sound suppressors up - why was it so high? She stayed silent for a while, wincing her way through the high-pitched pain until it finally quieted.
Marsek: Are you sure it's in there? I'm worried about getting lost.
Nakada: I’m not even sure we’re alone here.
Marsek: ...I think you're right about that.
With no other option, Xilva turned and headed into the strange forest. She alternated between glancing at her tricorder and scanning the area, looking for anything that could indicate an exit. There had to be one, right?
Marsek: You know, I'm wondering - would we have come this way if we took that lower path at the beginning? I'm starting to think this place is a giant loop. ::pauses:: ...And maybe the mural was hiding the doorway so that it would be sealed off, potentially forever.
Nakada: Response
Another deep rumble vibrated through Xilva's bones. Whatever was causing the noises was louder, closer - and apparently knew just how to cause pain to a half-Kerelian.
Marsek: ::covers her ears and kneels:: By the Prophets, that -hurts!-
She shakily pointed to the ground in front of her.
Marsek: ...Look. Broken branches. You know what that means, right?
Nakada: Response
Xilva turned her suppressors up as high as they could go and stood, brushing the dirt off of her jeans.
Marsek: ...I think it's time to start running.
Nakada: Response
