((Bridge, Deck 3, USS Ronin, Kappa-214))

With the commline muted briefly they discussed the horrifying new revelation about the plague ship.

Niac:  Counselor, XO, Chief Kessler has a room full of explosives a few meters in front of him and you're suggesting I let him know he's also been exposed to the most lethal biological agent known to Federation science?

Shortrith: I know that if I was in that situation, I'd want to know.

Niac: I can appreciate that Counselor. Mr. Raga, how certain are we that his suit is compromised? Can we tell if anyone else on the team is similarly exposed?

Toryn checked the away team’s vitals that they’d been monitoring and his brow furrowed slightly.

Raga: It’s been compromised. The logs mention the integrity of the suit dropped below a hundred percent and his vitals are showing a marked uptick in several areas beyond normal. Looks like something punctured the suit.

Shortrith: There are so many stressors at bay, not knowing the entirety of the situation would make it worse, and heighten the psychological risk.

Niac: The psychological risk is going to be somewhat secondary if we can't deal with this torpedo problem first, but your point is well taken. Mr. Raga, any luck?

Toryn looked up at Karrod and pondered his knowledge of the torpedoes in question.

Raga: We don’t have time to try a normal disarmament, but if we use the Ronin’s transporters we might be able to beam the arming chips and some other components that would impede their attempts. That should, in theory, cut down the time to disarm the warheads in half or more. It’s risky though. We’d be bypassing several safeties. ::he shrugged:: As for Mister Kessler’s issue, I’d want to know.

Shortrith: What would you like me to do?

Toryn could see the look Karrod gave them and knew that his friend and CO had already made up his mind.

Niac: I'll tell them.  You're right...they deserve to understand what they're facing.  Unmute the channel.

Toryn focused on dealing with the torpedoes but gave a nod of his head.

Niac: That'll be the first step towards beating this damn thing. Status of those torpedoes, Mr. Raga?

He unmuted the channel.

Raga: =/\= We’re going to try and see if we can use the transporters to disable the arming components of the warheads so they’ll deactivate or be easier to disarm, rather than risk them blowing out the buffer by trying to keep them in stasis. That being said, we have some unpleasant news. =/\= Counselor?

Shortrith: Understood. =/\= Mr Kessler, I'm sorry you have to hear this from us… =/\=

Niac: =/\= Chief...I'm putting this on open comms so everyone on the Rose can hear it.  Our probes have positively identified the wreckage of a Tarellian plague ship in this system.  Considering the severity of the situation aboard the Rose we must conclude that they have been exposed.  In addition...Lieutenant, your suit sensors are showing a puncture.  It's very likely you've been exposed.  We're attempting to ascertain if anyone else on the away team has also been compromised. =/\=

Raga: =/\= So far you seem to be the only one but the likelihood of that increases the longer you all are over there.  =/\=

Shortrith: =/\= At this stage, there's no set confirmation about anyone else being exposed. But there's no knowing yet whether they haven't. =/\=

Kessler: =/\= Tarellian? I see. Any news on how this was engineered? Or is this a mutation all of its own? =/\=

A small amount of chatter occurred on the other side of the channel before Kessler spoke again.

Kessler: ::Keeping comms open:: =/\= Sorry, my mother was a Medical Doctor and an Exo-Species Biologist. As you might expect deadly viruses were not an uncommon topic with her. ::pulling his tricorder out and flipping it open:: Given that no scans have revealed what we know about the Tarellian Virus then it stands that this is engineered to be different or it mutated, correct? =/\=

That was a question Toryn had no answer for. He was not Medical Prote. However he did quickly type out a text message to be dispersed among the Sickbay computers. So Quentin and his people could also be apprised.

Niac:  =/\= That's a reasonable assumption Chief, I'll pass it along to the team in sickbay.  This should help them narrow down what they're dealing with. In the meantime, are you or your team experiencing any symptoms?  Anything you could tell us about your condition at this early point could be invaluable.  =/\=

Raga: =/\= As a reminder, this thing causes flu-like symptoms, excessive paranoia and hallucinations. =/\=

Shortrith: =/\= This knowledge could be key in finding things that… alleviate the symptoms, and possibly save lives. =/\=

Kessler: =/\= What about medical records from Doctor Wyatt Earp? Wait, Wyatt Hiller....Wyatt Miller. Yeah Miller, didn't he stay in touch with Starfleet for a while about the plague ship he was aboard? =/\=

The line was muted again before the Captain looked at Renaie and him, confused.

Niac: I don't know a Doctor Earp and Miller's as common a human name as Pog is on Tellar Prime. Got any ideas?

Raga: ::he shook his head:: This is well out of my Prote.

Shortrith: Doesn't ring a bell on my end, I'm afraid.

Toryn’s head turned slightly when he noted the heavier breathing from their Chief Security Officer and that concerned furrow of his brow appeared again. He looked towards Karrod.

Kessler:  =/\= I'm thinking I'm not dead yet, but will be. If this was mutated then you have a far bigger issue on your hands. If this was engineered then there's a cure. The engineers wouldn't be stupid enough to follow in the Tarellian's footsteps and resequence a virus that was known to wipe out civilizations without ensuring their own was protected. Unless of course they were naturally immune. Which means we could develop a cure from them, right? =/\=

He heard the alerts from the Counselor’s station and they did not sound like positive news.

Niac: =/\= Logical conclusions, Mr. Kessler, I'll pass them along to the research team. Until then, get yourself and your people out of that armory while we dispose of your little torpedo problem, understood?  =/\=

Raga: =/\= At least two decks clearance would be best in case this doesn’t go as planned. =/\=

The comm signal was turned off after a moment. Which was never a good thing. Toryn glanced up at their tracking of the away teams on the viewscreen. When he saw Kessler’s team hadn’t moved from the armory he muttered a curse in Esperanto.

Niac:  Try to get them back, Toryn. Counselor, I think you just got your first look at how quickly this disease can affect someone.

Raga: Aye. Trying to reestablish comms. I’m not seeing any issues on our end.

Shortrith: With how fast diseases have been transmitted in the past, there's no second guessing ourselves at this stage.

Raga: This one is particularly nasty. ::he mused:: I’ll never understand the mindset of making bioweapons. There’s plenty of conventional ways to kill people horribly as it is.

Niac: Response

Shortrith: I can continue monitoring the biosignals from here, but I don't know if I can do any more from here.

He took a few moments to inspect the scans of the other ship and noted that the number of power surges from those warheads were diminishing slightly.

Raga: Captain. I’m seeing slightly fewer armed warheads on the Rose. It looks like they’re managing to disarm them. They’ve gotten at least five already.

Niac: Response

Shortrith: ::firmly:: I'll do what I can.

Raga: It’ll be close. But if they keep up this pace they should have them all disarmed before we have to explain why we chipped the paint.

Niac/Shortrith: Response

Raga: It’ll be closer than any of us like, but I trust our people. As for our hunt for that shuttle, it looks like they’re still chasing…

Toryn’s quick update was interrupted by Quentin’s voice.

Beck: =/\= Sickbay to Bridge. We got your message about locating the Tarrellian ship - I can confirm that what we're looking at is a heavily modified version of the plague. =/\=

Niac/Shortrith: Response

Raga: =/\= So someone altered the bioweapon? Please tell us you have good news, Doc. =/\=

Wyla/Nemes/Naledi: (optional) Response

He shot a look at the Xindi-Insectoid behind the protective glass and smiled humorlessly.

Beck: =/\= I think there's some hope - Lieutenant Naledi, who was sent over from the Rose, appears to have some sort of natural resistance to this thing. I don't want to call it immunity, I don't have enough evidence to say that for sure, but they are progressing at a much slower pace compared to everyone else. Now that we know where to start, we might be able to make quick, significant progress while investigating why it isn't affecting them the same way. ::a pause:: There is one little caveat, though… =/\=

Niac/Shortrith: Response

Raga: =/\= I was waiting for the catch. Don’t hold back, Doc. =/\=

Wyla/Nemes/Naledi: (optional) Response

The hesitant silence from the other end of the commline only made his ears itch more than they had been.

Beck: =/\= The information on the plague we have is almost 40 years out of date. We were able to match biomarkers to what readings they could get on the Enterprise way back when, but uh… I think if we want to make any headway, we need a live sample that hasn't infected anyone just yet. =/\=

Niac/Shortrith: Response

Raga: =/\= And how do you suppose we do that? =/\=

The Al-Leyan shot Karrod one of those, ‘we’re not going to like this’ looks as he leaned on the tactical console he’d moved to briefly. Slight head tilt and all.

Wyla/Nemes/Naledi: (optional) Response

Beck: =/\= I'd like to volunteer to lead the away team to dispatch to the plague ship. I have a pretty good idea what we're looking for, and I'm hoping maybe we'll get lucky and find the lab where they were modifying this thing. =/\=

Niac/Shortrith: Response

Raga: =/\= That’s risky. We already have one of our senior most medical staff stuck over there. Our Acting CMO. If you’re over there too then.. =/\=

Wyla/Nemes/Naledi: (optional) Response

Beck: =/\= I... feel I should also mention another theory I've got floating around in my head. This is based on a conversation I had earlier with Doctor Kel - he said there's nanomachines involved that are actually modifying the host's proteins to better allow the virus to spread. That suggests a highly advanced AI is being used. Just... throwing that out there. =/\=

Niac/Shortrith: Response

Raga: =/\= Nanomachines? Someone enhanced the Tarellian plague with AI? What madman thought that was a good idea? =/\=

The derision and outright shock was evident in his voice in a moment of emotional outburst before the XO took a deep breath and put back on that stoic visage he was most known for.

Wyla/Nemes/Naledi: (optional) Response

Niac/Shortrith: Response

Raga: =/\= Quentin, you should know that at least one of our people has already been infected as well. Mister Kessler’s suit was punctured a few minutes ago and he’s already showing signs of the infection. =/\=

Niac/Shortrith: Response

Beck: =/\= Response =/\=

Wyla/Nemes/Naledi: (optional) Response

An alert on the tactical console pulled his attention, followed by another. The first was one he’d set up when he noticed that the away team had started disarming some of the active torpedoes on the Rose. The other was something the sensors detected, a data stream from the Shinano. Which he immediately routed to the flight C&C.

Raga: There’s several fewer live warheads being registered and we just received an alert from the group looking for that shuttle. They’ve found one of the Rose’s escape pods adrift with life signs detected but are still in pursuit. I’ve already alerted our flight deck to send a recovery shuttle.

Niac/Shortrith: Response

Beck: =/\= Response =/\=

Wyla/Nemes/Naledi: (optional) Response
