((Flight Operations Center, Deck 7, USS Ronin))
Singh: =/\= Scramble ready fighters and S&R runabout. Shinano is on sensors but not responding to comms. Proceed with caution, maintain five hundred meter separation until threat assessment is performed. =/\=
Knight: That’s more noise we got out of them than when we first had them show up on sensors, but that’s it. I haven’t been able to get a life sign reading. I’m pretty sure it has to do with this region of space, with all the chronitons floating around, not to mention the formation of a temporal black hole.
Ishani's eyes narrowed as she scanned every centimeter of the hologlobe, watching the intercept plots update instantly as the fighters and runabout streaked away from the Ronin and through the bizarre particle morass that the Ross-580 system was quickly becoming. She spoke to Knight without taking her eyes from the display.
Singh: Whatever is happening out there is getting worse, Gunnery Sergeant, and our people are at risk. Have the repairs to my Valkyrie been completed yet? I am finding my lack of situational awareness here...frustrating.
Knight: I hate to say no, but no. I haven’t been able to, with engineering working on a power transfer and some systems offline or malfunctioning. I’ve been assured by my Lieutenant Morgan that she’s working out the imbalance; it's just taking a little longer than anticipated.
She nodded, not entirely surprised and not entirely satisfied either. She was certain she wasn't alone in the desire to be doing something...anything...to prevent or forestall the disaster that had befallen the Kurosawa...but unlike many members of the crew, she had the full authority of the aerospace wing.
Singh: Please advise Lieutenant Morgan that if my ship is not flight ready within the hour I'll be going out in that soup in whatever is left on the flight deck...and they'll be riding right alongside. Perhaps that will...motivate them.
Knight nodded and the two of them settled into a heavy, expectant silence. They both glared at the hologlobe and the slowly moving icons representing the outbound flight as it headed towards the Shinano, an unpleasant sense of foreboding permeating the compartment.
Knight: :: rubbing his beard:: Maybe it’s me, but this feels off. I can’t quite put my finger on it.
She nodded, still not tearing her eyes from the display.
Singh: It's not just you, Gunny. That instinct that's still hardwired in the very back of our brains, that one that warned our ancestors that something just out of sight was stalking them in the tall grass? Mine has been screaming at me for hours. In my experience it's worth listening to. There is a threat here...to us...to the ship...possibly to far far more. The Captain and the XO died trying to warn us about what it was. I just wish more of their message had gotten through. Has the analysis of the yacht debris turned up anything at all?
Knight: Response
Ishani bit off a curse that would've stripped paint from the hull.
Singh: Ours is a life saving profession, Gunnery Sergeant. Sometimes that means putting ourselves in harms way, other times that means taking violent action in service of protecting the innocent. I am willing to do either if the need arises...but I cannot put myself in front of some vague spectral emissions to defend our people and I cannot blindly fire weapons until the universe bends to my will. I've tried it more than once and it never helps. We must determine how to unravel this mystery before it takes more from us.
Knight: Response
Ishani was cut off as the comm line crackled into life, the heavily distorted, synthesized voice of their lead pilot barely carrying over the channel.
Gra'vel: =/\= ...cuttles to Ronin...Severe...si...interfe...senso...indeterm...plea....advis....=/\=
Singh pressed the comm controls with gritted teeth.
Singh: =/\= Say again Valkyrie 1-1, say again. =/\= Gunny, boost the gain on the transceiver as high as it will go. Try applying a narrow band filter, we have to scrub out that noise.
Knight: Response
The hologlobe seemed to fritz and dissolve for a moment as a data channel from Gra'vel's fighter opened and Ishani drew in a breath, this time not bothering to bite off a curse. The Shinano may have been intact as far as sensors were concerned but her eyes were telling her something truly bizarre had befallen the vessel.
Singh: Saali kutti....what could have done that?!
Knight: Response
