((Deck 9, Flight Deck aft, USS Ronin))

Sybil was working at a console when she heard her name over the communication system.

Tucker: =/\= Lieutenants Evinrude and Nemes report to the flight deck immediately. =/\=

Without any hesitation, she stood up, grabbed her uniform jacket that hung over the chair and headed straight for the next turbolift.

Right outside the flightdeck, she met Tess, who came from the other direction. She gave him a nod and, wordlessly, entered the deck together.

There were already several pieces of debris from a destroyed ship on the flight deck, and Sybil's steps slowed noticeably when she recognized from some of the better-preserved parts that these were the remains of a small Starfleet vessel. However, not much was really recognizable anymore.

When they came closer to Singh and Tucker she could hear parts of the things that Singh just said.

Singh: … It's significantly limiting our effectiveness and slowing the recovery.

Sybil noticed the brief glances directed at her gold-coloured uniform, but now was neither the place nor the time to talk about it. Her gaze wandered over the piles of rubble, which were growing by the minute as more were brought on board.

Tucker: ::he nodded:: Welcome, Lieutenants.

A short moment of silence followed before Singh started to brief both Tess and her.

Singh: Lieutenants...this is the wreckage of the Kurosawa, the Captains Yacht. Shortly after transiting into this system by means currently unknown, Fleet Captain Niac and Commander Raga attempted to send the Ronin a message. Less than ten seconds later the yacht experienced a catastrophic core breach, destroying the vessel. All aboard are presumed dead. Our responsibility...our duty...is to find out exactly how this...::she gestured hatefully towards the debris::...happened.

Sybil felt as if everything inside her was tightening – her stomach, her belly and her throat. It was indeed the Kursowa – the Ronin's captain's yacht, which the captain and first officer had been travelling on. The words ‘presumed dead’ echoed in her head – she had heard them only recently when she had been talking to her family about her brother’s tragic death. He had also died in a shuttle incident. She tensed her muscles to concentrate and prevent her knees, which felt dangerously wobbly, from starting to shake. That would be unprofessional.

Nemes: ::almost whispered:: Oh my god. They are both…

Sybil stopped speaking mid-sentence as she could not say anything more. She looked at Tess, glad that he was here with her, standing next to her. This was a terrible situation.

Evinrude: Response

With a warm smile, Tucker held up a hand.

Tucker: I know we’ve all got questions, but now is not the time. Right now, our job is to go through the wreckage of the Kurosawa with a fine-toothed comb and retrieve the black box. It hasn’t been found yet, and we may have to go out and look for it.

Ishani nodded and gestured towards the technicians assembling forensic sensor arrays all around the wreckage.

Singh: I've asked my people to setup supplemental sensor arrays that you'll be able to direct from your tricorders. You will be able to study this wreckage molecule by molecule until we understand exactly what has occurred. If we are able to recover the yachts flight data recorder, it should help us reconstruct at least the last few minutes of the Kurosawa's flight.

Trying not to let the pictures of her imagination about the last few minutes of the two officers play in her head, she just nodded briefly and reached for her tricorder. She hoped it would be easier because she had a task to do. She opened it and opened the link to the mentioned sensor arrays.

Nemes: Yes, link has been established. ::she looked at Tess:

Evinrude: Response

A heavy piece of debris was beamed in and caused the eyes of Singh to widen. It was clearly a part of the warp core – well, about half of it – and Sybil wondered why it had not been completely vaporised when it had breached.

Tucker: ::clapping his hands together:: Are we ready to put Humpty Dumpty back together?

Singh: By all means, Commander...::she flipped open the tricorder and began scanning but under her breath she whispered.:: May cool winds forever guide you, Toryn.

Nemes: ::looking at Tess slightly irritated:: Humpty Dumpty?

Evinrude: Response

Everybody started to work their way from one piece to the next, trying to put together the puzzle.

Singh: The runabouts reported sensor interference outside the ship but that shouldn't be affecting us in here. Are your tricorders working normally?

Sybil looked at the readings. Up until now, everything seemed okay. She already wanted to answer as she noticed something by accident when she scanned a piece she had already scanned a minute ago.

Nemes: Well, I … erm, no. Those readings are ::furrowing her brow:: not making sense really. ::beat:: Maybe my tricorder has some malfunction. Or maybe there is an issue with the connection to the sensor arrays?

Sybil started to check on the link to those sensors but that seemed to be alright.

Tucker/Evinrude: Response

When she looked up again from the small screen, Sybil noticed that Singh seemed to have the same problem as she passed her tricorder over the wreckage several times and die not seem too happy with the results.

Singh: To me this looks like part of one of the starboard RCS assemblies...but the tricorder can't make sense of it. A warp core breach wouldn't do...this. Not by itself.

Nemes: No, the core breach of a shuttle or yacht could not affect our tricorders or the material in such a way. ::beat:: And the link to the arrays is also working perfectly.

She looked at those pieces and thought about the problem. Of course, a storm or other phenomena outside the ship could cause sensor distortions, but here inside the ship, that was really unusual.

Tucker/Evinrude: Response

Her years of routine as a science officer kicked in.

Nemes: A natural ion or plasma storm can interfere with the sensors, but it does not alter the physical properties or composition of materials, so our tricorders or sensors would still be able to make sense of the data. At least, I am not aware of any such phenomenon. Unless... unless the yacht was exposed to some other phenomenon that we do not yet know. But that is pure speculation. ::looking up, realising she was talking too much: Sorry, I'm just thinking out loud.

Tucker/Evinrude/Singh: Response

Nemes: Shouldn't a black box send out a location signal in such a case, so that it is easier to find?

Tucker/Evinrude/Singh: Response
