Gunny heard the doors to the FOC swish open, revealing a not totally awake Major. She slid up next to Knight as he stared at the holo-glob. The Shinano just sat motionless, its beacon transmitting, but other than that, there was nothing; they couldn’t even get lifesign readings. He made sure he had all his ducks in a row before even waking the Major, so he was prepared.
Singh: Report. Has the Shinano tried to make contact yet?
He rubbed his beard in thought before answering.
Knight: Alert five is getting twitchy. The S&R runabout is fired up, Lieutenant Frost will be in charge of the mission, ma’am. He and I went to the same Search and Rescue school. We can’t get any true readings with all the interference; it's maddening.
Singh: Protocol is to call in after any loss of contact, and by our clock, they've been missing nearly seven hours. Try hailing them.
Knight: Yes, Ma’am. =/\= Shinano, this is Ronin Actual. Do you copy?
Shinano: =/\= *crack* Roi-*snap* —Nia- *bzzzz*..... =/\=
The comm line snapped shut.
Knight: =/\= Shinano, please repeat this again. This is Ronin Actual. =/\=
This time, they were greeted with dead silence. The Major leaned over and keyed a button of her own.
Singh: =/\= Scramble ready fighters and S&R runabout. Shinano is on sensors but not responding to comms. Proceed with caution, maintain five hundred meter separation until threat assessment is performed. =/\=
Knight: That’s more noise we got out of them than when we first had them show up on sensors, but that’s it. I haven’t been able to get a life sign reading. I’m pretty sure it has to do with this region of space, with all the chronitons floating around, not to mention the formation of a temporal black hole.
The thing was going to start more problems in the near future. He turned to look out the large bay window, which looked out into the flight deck, just in time to see the S&R runabout L'aanya lift off the deck and head out in pursuit of the fighters that had just cleared the deck themselves. He loved watching flight deck operations, the best view in the house as far as he was concerned,

Knight: I hate to say no, but no. I haven’t been able to, with engineering working on a power transfer and some systems offline or malfunctioning. I’ve been assured by my Lieutenant Morgan that she’s working out the imbalance; it's just taking a little longer than anticipated.
Singh: Response
He left out the part where she’s said untoward things about his mother, as apparently she’d dropped something on her foot. He turned back to the holo-globe. The fighters would be in range of the Shinano in less than five minutes.
Knight: :: rubbing his beard:: Maybe it’s me, but this feels off. I can’t quite put my finger on it.
A part of him wanted to be on that S&R runabout; he’d been a while since he ran a search op. As much as he loved his job, getting out in the field every now and again kept his skills sharp.
