((Deeply Unpleasant Clearing, Southern Polar Region, Gamma Stellonis IV))
De La Croix: When you said something was stalking us you weren't just trying to sound dramatic, were you?
Raga: I’m never dramatic when my people’s lives are at potential risk, doctor. ::he said simply:: I can’t tell if it’s wildlife or Gorn out there but I recommend you get your patient ready for transport as soon as possible Thess.
Evinrude: ::Keeping his voice calm, he called loud enough for the doctor to hear.:: Doctor De La Croix? The patient is ready to be mobile, but we need to...verify something. Can you come here, please?
Raga: Time is not on our side, doctor. ::he offered a smile at the patient:: I don’t believe you gave us your name.
Tannum: Mealla… ::mumbling:: Idon'tremembermysurname…
Thess dragged her attention away from the treeline and walked back towards the girl in concern. She already suspected a certain amount of neurological damage and an inability to remember ones name was never a good sign. She affixed a reasonably unconcerned expression and looked towards the Lieutenant and then her patient.
De La Croix: Ah there we are, your travel arrangements have been attended to. Lets see what Nurse Tess's tricorder here has to say. Have you been running the standard triage series?
Evinrude: That's right, for just about thirty seconds now. I'll patch over my medical scan data. ::Quietly.:: Trouble answering, memory issues...we need to get her to the Argo, now.
Thess's unbothered smile faltered but, with effort, she kept her attention on her patient and the tricorder. She didn't have many options for effective treatment now but establishing a baseline now would let them know how quickly the poor girl was degrading. They had a few hours at most to get her to proper facilities and a spirited jaunt through the jungle would do nothing to extend that.
Evinrude: Sir? What's out there?
Raga: If I had to guess, it’s a pack of something and they have us surrounded.
There was a deafening crack of thunder that rippled back on itself, a sound Thess found most unsettling, and the Starfleet people put weapons to shoulders, scanning for whatever it was skulking about. Part of her wished the damn thing would just try to kill them and get it over with, she was much too pressed for time to deal with such foolishness. She glared towards the jungle with a naked hostility that made the trees sway.
Tannum: … pack of what?
She reduced the output of her glare before looking back to her patient and glanced towards the hovering trailer nearby.
De La Croix: We'll let the boys deal with that, don't you worry. Lets just get you situated...imagine it like your personal palanquin...what it lacks in style it more than makes up for in comfort I'm sure. All the same, do one of you two have an extra one of those phasers? Just in case?
Raga: Good, get her onto the trailer with Lieutenant Dohna. And if you think you’re up for it, give her one of the extra hand phasers.
Evinrude: Here, take mine. I've got a rifle. ::He gave the patient a winning smile, passing over the sidearm grip first.::
Tannum: Thanks… there's a phaser on my belt too.
Thess glanced down in surprise to see the butt of a weapon sticking out and arched an eyebrow towards Mia.
De La Croix: My word, it seems surveying is a more exciting profession than it sounds. Lets save that as a last resort, shall we? Pistols and concussions rarely mix well.
Evinrude: ::Swinging his aim towards the opposite treeline that Raga had covered, Tess opened fire, more to scare than harm...for now.:: Contact, right! At least three!
Raga: Everyone on the buggy, now!
The stuff of nightmares and shadows, made mostly of blade and tooth and a sickly looking sort of sopping fur, emerged from the treeline like a demon newly summoned into the mortal world. Thess may have let out a little, tiny, infinitesimal squeak of fear.
Raga: Get the buggy started and make sure both our patients are secure on that trailer.
The sound of his voice and the sudden whine of phaser fire snapped her out of her terrified fixation and she dove to the side of their improvised stretcher, pushing it towards the open rear of the buggy. What had seemed like a few short meters only a moment ago now looked like an impossible distance from her to relative safety.
Evinrude: ::To DLC:: I've got this side, doctor!
Tannum: ::Extremely out of it:: um… ::extrememely softly:: Ow.
At some point her pith hat had fallen to the ground and her hair was beginning to trail into her face in a most irritating fashion. She slicked it back into place with some rainwater, glad at least for relatively clear vision, and glanced apologetically towards her patient.
De La Croix: When I register my complaint about this unpleasant little ball of dirt I'll be sure to include your criticism of their bumpy terrain. I mean there's rustic and then there's this nonsense!
Raga: Doctor, as soon as everyone’s in get us out of here!
Evinrude: I'm in! Let's roll!
Tannum: I'm secure in here.
Thess already had the vehicle swinging around in a tight arc, snapping the nose back and powering away from those creatures as fast as she dared to move. Some of her adrenaline boiled over and she shouted to the air as they charged out of the clearing.
De La Croix: Forward Frankel!
Raga: This is not a food cart! ::he called out after them::
Thess was too busy focusing on the trees and vines and ruts and divots in the path ahead to spare a glance back but she could hear the weapons fire stop and hoped for the best. She still pressed down harder on the accelerator.
Evinrude: They've stopped! And...they're retreating?
Tannum: … what?
She felt some of her haunty confidence returning as the beasts fell away behind them.
De La Croix: See, like I said just being dramatic. I'm sure nothing else will come from that at all. Well done you two all the same...do you want me to swing back and pick one up to turn into a rug? I know an excellent taxidermist....
She prattled on for a few minutes as they charged back towards the waiting runabout and, hopefully, safety. She worked hard to ignore the sounds of the jungle around them.
((Buggy 'Frankel', Southern Polar Region, Gamma Stellonis IV))
Raga: They have. Either they decided we weren’t worth it or we got far enough from their territory they no longer wanted to give chase. I’m not sure.
Thess flashed a glance backwards but couldn't spare a second from the controls.
Tannum: That was a bad idea.
De La Croix: Lieutenant, do try to make her more comfortable. We should be at the runabout in a short while but the terrain near the landing zone is...well, lets just say I'd take a cobbled stone walkway in high heels over this tangled mire.
Raga: Take it easy, Mia. You’re in no condition to push yourself if you want to keep on the Doctor’s good side. Do you happen to know where the rest of your crew might have crashed?
Tannum: How far away are we?
Raga: I’d say a kilometer at this point. It’ll take us a while to get back to our shuttle.
Thess glanced at the navigation system and urged Frankel forward.
De La Croix: At least twenty minutes by this route, but according to my co-driver it has fewer amorous vines. The medical supplies on the runabout should be more than enough to bring Lt. Dohna around...and they'll certainly make you feel better dear.
Evinrude: ::He called towards the back.:: I know it's not a terribly comfortable ride back there. How's our driving?
Tannum: ::light sarcasm:: Lovely.
She caught the smirk and rolled an eye back but her mouth turned up at the corners. She ducked the steering to one side abruptly and may have delighted when she heard Tess thud against the cabins sidewall.
Raga: Can’t be helped. But we’ll get you back as soon as we can without aggravating your injuries.
There was a mechanical whine as the little hunting stool retracted its way into the vehicle and suddenly the three of them were in the cabin in relatively close proximity. The sudden lack of noise was jarring over the intensity of the last few minutes.
Evinrude: ::Quietly, to DLC:: If either patient needs something, I can shimmy back. Just let me know.
She affected a certain amount of mock offense but her lips remained curled in amusement.
De La Croix: And risk more unearned criticism of my superb cross-country rallying skills? I think not!
Tannum: Response
Raga: As the doctor said, you’re in no shape for us to waste time trying to find your shipmates. We’re not the only team looking for them. We have two other shuttles here with people who have the same orders to find your people and get them out of here. Right now, keeping you from dying is our priority. But since you’re well enough to talk, maybe you can shed some light on why the Gorn are in the system?
Thess tried to keep an urgent yet unconcerned note in her voice as they dodged around a recently fallen tree.
De La Croix: And in case you haven't noticed dear, this isn't the nicest neighborhood. It'll be rather difficult to help your crew if we're contending with more of those critters or who knows what else. For all I know there's a giant singing potted plant just around the corner here and no one wants to deal with that in wet boots now do we dear?
Tannum: Response
Thess saw something on the very edge of her vision for a fraction of a moment and squinted. A moment later the XO's voice was uncomfortably close to her ear.
Raga: Slow down a moment doctor. I think we have a shadow pacing us.
She hissed back but still lightened her pressure on the accelerator.
De La Croix: Sounds like a marvelous reason to speed up!
Evinrude: ::Quietly.:: Just one of them?
Thess had been trying to concentrate on the path ahead, away from whatever freshly baked loaf of nightmare this planet intended to serve up next, but her attention was draw by the sudden, pulsating glow of dozens of vines or tendrils. It cast a grotesque, macabre glow which filled the jungle with distorted shadows and false monsters. Thess was so distracted she barely reigned Frankel's steering around in time and winced as the front collision bar scrapped the top half meter of bark off a passing tree.
Evinrude: ::Dryly:: I hate this planet.
De La Croix: On that we completely agree. Oh Terry dear, do you think I should slow down some more now? Hmmmmm?!
Tannum/Raga: Response
Thess didn't wait for the answer and absolutely mashed the throttle down, sending dirt and stone and torn vine into the air behind the buggy as they passed trees within centimeters. Her only thought was on the next fifty meters, on sliding past the next rock or hopping safely over the next culvert.
Evinrude: Watch ou--what?! ...did anyone see that?
Thess had no time to look over as the buggy bounced across the terrain until she heard a shout and saw her codriver being yanked from his seat and dragged out of the cabin by some snarling force. Thess threw the steering hard over to avoid having the man collide with a nearby tree and didn't want to think about how closely they were passing to his head. She reached hand across to grab at the waist of his uniform pants and felt herself being dragged sideways for her trouble.
De La Croix: Must I do everything around here Toryn!?
Tannum/Raga/Evinrude: Response
The nav system bleeped an alarm, they were drifting far off the suggested route and towards one of those predatory vine clusters that had ensnared them earlier. Thess fought at the steering with one hand as she anchored the Lieutenant with her other and aimed directly for the damnable things.
De La Croix: Get him in the cabin! I'm going to drive us right through those vines as quickly as I can, hopefully they'll end up grabbing our new friends out there and give us a chance to make a break for the runabout!
Tannum/Raga/Evinrude: Response
Something loudly thudded against Frankel's roof and Thess glanced upwards in alarm.
De La Croix: This carriage is spoken for you screechy little menace! Shoo! Shoo!
Tannum/Raga/Evinrude: Response
