De La Croix:  This is your fault.

Rox: I heard you the first five times ::giving jazz hands::  I've got super strumpet hearing.

Thessolonia rolled her eyes from a nearly identical position, sitting on the floor with her back to the finely appointed wall just as far from the tempestuous young nurse as she could be.

De La Croix: Very droll dear but somehow I don't quite believe it.

The sullen girl offered a heaving huff before pinning her with a look.

Rox:  You know I used to love to work in sickbay.  I took care of people, I was a valued asset. Not just on the Ronin, but on the Thor and the Oumuamua and the Chin'toka. ::pausing::  Now it seems like sickbay is my least favorite place to be. Full of uppity doctors with attitudes.

Thess spread her arms in a gesture of profound magnanimity.

De La Croix: Whoever could you be referring to?  I've done exactly what I set out to do...what I've always done...taken something broken and improved it, no matter how much whining about it I hear.

Whatever she'd wanted to hear that hadn't been it and Thess could nearly feel the anger radiating off the finger being pointed at her.

Rox:  You made sickbay a hell for everyone, especially me.

Thess shrugged and shook her head, the remains of some local delicacy detaching itself from her platinum blond hair and splatting on the floor.

De La Croix: Dear, I've been in sickbays, surgical suites, hospital ships and medical centers across the quadrant for the last twenty odd years...and your mortuary of a medical center was barely a step above an infernal realm long before I ever appeared on the scene.

The young woman stood up and suddenly looked inwards, reflecting on something.  Thess found herself strangely interested.

Rox:  You know what that's not true.  Sickbay was difficult before you arrived.  ::pausing::  It all started the day Quentin Beck showed up.

Thess laughed.  More to the point she snorted in a most unlady like but entirely genuine way, a bitter but real sort of humor behind the sound.

De La Croix: Oh Beckie....why does that not surprise me?  If it makes you feel any better you're not the first to be...vexed...by him.  I have found him to be comprehensively intolerable...profoundly irritating...smug, self-righteous...and don't even get me started on that ridiculous mustache of his...

Rox:  Response

Thess wasn't sure why but she felt like sharing something that had weighed heavily on her for years now.

De La Croix:  Well hopefully you had more sense than me as a young woman and didn't sleep with him.  I've regretted that lapse of judgment for quite a while now.  In fact even after all this time it keeps coming back to haunt me.  Hence our...current predicament.

Rox:  Response

Thess laughed again, a deep rich sound that came from a real place of warmth within her.

De La Croix:  Really?  A Beck-o-gram?  That's...::She shook her head, unable to find the words as she dissolved into another fit of laughter::...and people accuse me of grandiose narcissism.

Rox:  Response

Thess listened to the young woman...for perhaps the first time...and heard something there she recognized.  Something she'd carefully hidden away behind layers of poise and pretention for most of her adult life.  Something she'd never revealed to even those closest to her.  Something of herself.

De La Croix:  Roxanne...may I call you Rox?  Did you know I have a sister?  ::she did nothing to disguise the venom in her voice.::  Apollonia.  Such a lovely name for a woman who could make flowers wilt and singing birds fall dead from the sky with a single, scathing look.  She made my childhood every bit the hell it seems I've made your place of work.  And she did so...joyfully.

Rox:  Response
