(( Sickbay, Deck 10, USS Ronin))
Taj’el was not particularly adept at reading people, yet even they could discern that they had annoyed Doctor Beck. In their attempt to assist, while also avoiding appearing idle, they had acted prematurely. Logically, it was clear they should not have intervened without proper assessment; however, their intention had been to remain useful.
They stepped back slightly, folding their hands neatly in front of them, and allowed the other doctors to continue their discussion.
Taj’el: Forgive the delayed introduction. I was Lieutenant Junior Grade Taj’el of the USS Thor. I was currently on temporary reassignment for research purposes. ::Said to the new Ensign:
Beck: In that case, I might ask you to research bedside manner and seek improvement.
The Vulcan made no outward physical reaction; however, there was a subtle indication that the comment had registered, as it pertained to their lowest performance at the Academy and a skill they continued to find challenging. They inclined their head slightly in acknowledgment of the CMO’s advice.
Shortrith: ::genuinely:: If you'd like, I can help you work on that.
Looking toward the Klingon, Taj’el raised an eyebrow at the offer. They assessed them briefly, uncertain; however, given that they had initially mistaken him for the CMO, it was logical to conclude they possessed greater experience than themselves. After a moment of consideration, they gave a slow nod, determining it would be prudent to accept.
Additionally, Commander Saa’s guidance, to make an effort to meet new individuals, remained a persistent consideration in their thoughts.
Ryen: It is very nice to meet all of you. As this is my first assignment, I am not only looking to learn a lot but also to make some friends aboard. And you all have me very curious about how dangerous these missions have been.
Beck: ::to Shortrith:: Let's make sure we're ready to go for anyone else that might wander in here today. Can you take a closer look at Mister Ryen here for us? ::to Taj'el:: Research opportunities are important, but I would appreciate you pump the brakes for a second until I can better understand just what it is you are researching.
Taj'el: A pleasure, Ensign. ::Pause:: I understand, Commander. Forgive my haste, I will not initiate any action without authorization.
Shortrith: Yeah, I'll have a closer look. ::To Ryen:: Mind taking a seat on the biobed?
Much like the Ensign, Taj’el observed Doctor Shortrith closely. The procedures were standard, yet it remained beneficial to watch and learn from the physicians aboard the ship. They occasionally glanced toward Commander Beck; however, they had already concluded that their prior interaction had been unsuccessful, a realization that caused a faint tightness in their chest.
Ryen: Of course.
The Ensign appeared to chuckle, or at least display some form of emotional response. Taj’el raised an eyebrow, uncertain what had prompted it. It suggested a degree of expressiveness they found notable, particularly for a Vulcan. Not incorrect, merely… atypical.
Taj'el: What prompted that response? ::They inquired aloud, their tone measured and precise::
Shortrith: Have you had any previous medical difficulties?
Ryen: Nothing major, Doctor. Standard childhood illnesses, a few training injuries at the Academy. Nothing that required extended care. I've always healed quickly.
Ryen: Though I imagine Starfleet service may test that record.
Taj'el: It may be attributable to my Vulcan heritage.
Beck: Response
Shortrith: Mind if I run some diagnostic scans?
Ryen: Not at all.
It was, in truth, rather fascinating to simply observe. The new Ensign displayed a number of emotional responses, and they appeared straightforward enough that Taj’el believed they could interpret their meaning, at least with some degree of confidence.
Glancing toward the other two doctors, however, Taj’el found themselves wondering if they were capable of reading them with the same level of understanding.
Beck: Response
Shortrith: One moment, I'll get your results in a second.
Ryen: If you don't mind me asking. Those missions you mentioned earlier, what made them harrowing? Was it the environment, the enemy, or something else?
That, too, was of interest to Taj’el.
Ryen: I'd like to understand what this crew has already faced. It seems like there's a lot I can learn from all of you, both in the field and here.
Taj'el: I find myself similarly curious. The report I received was… imprecise at best.
Beck/Shortrith/: Response
Ryen: That is good to know. I will need to ensure I am prepared for anything on upcoming missions. I am always open to advice.
Watching the Ensign, Taj’el was reminded that they themselves had occupied that position not long ago. Unlike the Ensign, however, they had been thrust into a mission the moment they set foot aboard the Thor. Since then, events had proceeded without pause, and the constant influx of new experiences had proven… taxing.
Taj'el: I am not familiar with these Alpha Isles; however, I am aware that conditions vary. Not every mission is… as chaotic
They paused briefly, having settled on the closest approximation to their intended reassurance.
Beck/Shortrith: Response
Ryen: I appreciate you all helping to bring me up to speed, truly. It helps to know what I might be walking into.
The Ensign laughed again. Taj’el found the response unusual, as his facial expression did not appear to indicate happiness.
Ryen: Even if it is a bit sobering.
Beck/Shortrith: Response
Taj'el: Int… ::They stopped themselves, electing not to complete the thought::
Even if the information was of interest, Taj’el recognized that the situation had been significant for the crew and, in many cases, deeply personal. While facts held inherent value, individuals had been harmed; this was neither the appropriate time nor place to express intellectual curiosity.
They lowered their head slightly in apology and shifted their position, partially placing themself behind the Klingon, who seemed, somewhat unexpectedly, to be the more approachable of the two doctors.
Ryen: Actually, I was wondering if any of you happen to have some free time later. Would anyone be willing to show me around the ship? I've only seen a small portion of the Ronin so far.
His smile appeared once again, followed by an involuntary physical response as his stomach produced an audible sound. Taj’el raised an eyebrow as they observed him.
Ryen: My apologies. It seems I may have missed a meal during the transfer process.
Taj'el: I am no less new than you are. I am therefore unable to provide a definitive answer.
Beck/Shortrith: Response
Glancing toward the other two doctors, Taj’el found their attention drawn to the hybrid. Their own efforts to understand other species had often proven challenging; however, here was an individual with apparent Vulcan traits who behaved in a markedly more human manner than the J'naii helm officer.
They were also curious about the doctors more broadly, how they perceived and interacted with the world, but found themselves unexpectedly hesitant to request their time. For the moment, it seemed more appropriate to wait for further instruction.
Taj’el: Whatever you senior officers think is best.
They did make a mental note though to make time to speak to them all in more depth.
Beck/Shortrith/Ryen: Response
