((Ready Room, Deck 3, USS Ronin))
Ensign T’Fearne entered the softly carpeted ready room of the USS Ronin for the first time, a mixture of anticipation and caution stirring in her chest as she approached Captain Niac’s desk. The room glowed warmly with the ambient light of a starship docked to a station, and the bustling activity of shuttles and repair systems outside the viewport contrasted with the steady hum of the ship’s internal systems, creating an industrious atmosphere.
Niac: Stand at ease, Ensign, you're making my back ache. Welcome to the Ronin.
Captain Niac stood from behind his desk, offering a firm handshake to welcome her aboard. He gestured towards a comfortable chair, inviting her to take a seat amidst the controlled chaos of padds and data displays that adorned his workspace.
T’Fearne: Thank you, Captain. ::Nodding in thanks:: I can see the timing of my arrival is unfortunate. May I ask what has happened and how can I help?
She watched as he shook his head and placed her transfer confirmation on the largest pile of padds’ she had ever seen on one individual's desk. oO I hope I don’t have that much paddwork to deal with. Oo
Niac: The timing of your arrival isn't the issue, Ensign, but the circumstances certainly are. The Alpha Isles is a very dangerous area and unfortunately the Ronin recently suffered a number of casualties. I would always prefer happier circumstances for bringing a new officer aboard but what I prefer and what the universe chooses to provide are rarely the same thing. To your question...the most important thing you can do is get yourself up to speed...so your next stop after me should be your new boss, Lt. Cmdr. Carpenter. She'll get you onto the security duty roster and will help orient you.
T’Fearne: ::Taking the seat offered and listening intently,:: Understood, Captain. Integration and readiness are priorities for me. I look forward to meeting with Lt. Cmdr. Carpenter and getting started.
Niac: I know in the Academy you learned that ships run on antimatter reactors and fusion plants but the reality is they run on paddwork and a fair amount of coffee. Or tea, if you prefer. To that end you've got some important items to check off your list in the next few days...a visit to our sickbay for your induction physical and an introduction to our ships counselor, Lt. Cmdr. Dekas.
T’Fearne: Captain, I must admit, Earth coffee holds a special place for me. I'll organise those meetings promptly. I look forward to meeting the rest of the crew.
Glancing at the Ronin’s emblem on the wall as the captain gestured to it, T’Fearne couldn’t help but be amused when she noticed the intricate details, including subtle motifs of coffee beans woven into the blue and bronze design—a nod to the ship’s fuel beyond technology or dilithium. oO He’s not exaggerating about the ship being run on coffee. Oo
Niac: The Ronin has been through quite a lot in the last few months and it has forged this crew into an incredibly cohesive unit. Work hard, trust your colleagues, learn all you can from them...because we're all we have out here in the black. Understood?
T’Fearne: ::Her response was prompt and respectful.:: Affirmative, Captain. ::Pausing thoughtfully, she added,:: Is there anything safety-specific I should know about operating through a challenging region such as the Alpha Isles?
She thought about asking if there was anything of concern aboard the Ronin itself but decided to wait and determine that for herself.
Niac: Response
T’Fearne: Understood, Captain. I'll make sure to stay informed and prepared for the challenges ahead.
Niac: Response
T’Fearne: Thank you, Captain. :: Rising from the chair :: I won’t disappoint.
Thoughts already shifting to the tasks ahead and the weight of responsibility she now bore as a member of the USS Ronin’s crew, T’Fearne turned to leave the ready room, oO Speaking of Coffee. Where is the mess? Oo
