to USS Ronin – StarBase 118 Star Trek PBEM RPG
((Bridge, Deck 3, USS Ronin, Outside the Olidra System))

The last several hours had passed in a purposeful blur of interlocking activities, all of which had lead them to this point just beyond the Olidra system.  They'd left Commander Raga's team aboard the Kushino back in the Sunjat system where, with any luck, they should've intercepted the disabled freighter by now.  Then they'd deposited Lt. Cmdr. Alieth's team in deep space, high above the system's elliptical plane and hopefully far beyond the envelope of any security sensors.  With the exception of Major Carpenter and Chief Corelli, most of his senior staff was now off ship and effectively on their own while the Ronin tackled the most dangerous part of the plan he'd formulated.  It would require a shocking amount of coordination and tight timing but, to Karrod's immense personal satisfactions, he found that he comprehensively trusted his officers.  He knew, without entirely being able to articulate how, that his people were up to the challenge.  He only hoped they shared that same confidence in him.

The chrono in the arm of his chair beeped a small warning tone and Karrod realized they had less than two minutes until the curtain would rise on their little performance.  He intended to make it a good one.  Standing, he turned his attention to where Chief Corelli and Major Carpenter had their heads together near the elongated Master System Display that dominated the rear of the bridge.

Niac:  Major, Chief, is our little pyrotechnics display ready to go?

Carpenter/Corelli:  Response

Tugging his beard at the last minute wrinkle Karrod gave it a few moments of thought.

Niac:  That is quite a lot of...uh...boom.  If we deploy the canisters at maximum transporter range how far away are we going to need to be to keep from blinding our own sensors?

Carpenter/Corelli:  Response

He shrugged but patted at the railing behind his chair affectionately.

Niac:  I have no interest in giving our ship any fresh scars but I'll understand if we need a new coat of paint when this mission is over.  Excellent work, both of you.  Take your stations, we're about to drop out of warp.  Major Carpenter...sound red alert.  I want tactical systems brought to full readiness and I want you to make a show of it.  Chief, don't worry about minimizing our emissions profile....I want the ship lit up brighter than Freecloud during happy hour.  Anything you can think of that'll make us look even bigger and meaner than we already do.

Carpenter/Corelli:  Response

From the front of the bridge the helmsman on duty cleared their throat to get his attention.

Nicolau:  Sir, we're coming up on the intercept coordinates.

Karrod nodded and returned to his chair.

Niac:  Very well, drop us out of warp and bring us to a full stop, but standby on those engine controls.  You're about to get very busy, Ensign.

Nicolau:  Aye Sir, standing by to get busy.

Karrod snorted a chuckle and the young woman turned around, embarrassment plain on her quickly reddening face.

Nicolau:  Sir, I didn't mean...I uh, that is to say, I'm standing by to...uh...

Karrod held up a hand but accompanied it with a tight smile.

Niac:  Relax Ensign...it takes more than that to curl my beard.  Eyes on your station.

With relief pouring off her youthful features their helmsman turned back to the controls as the ship made the final transition back into normal space right on schedule.  Sensors across the bridge immediately began chirping in shrill alarm as the Ronin got their first real look at what was hiding in the Olidra system.  Karrod's eyes widened as the viewscreen filled with dozens of ships, defensive platforms and other small craft, many of which were now turning their way.

Niac:  Looks like we've gotten their attention.  Chief, begin deploying the first set of containers but standby on detonation.  Major Carpenter, tactical analysis.  Those certainly look like Sheliak and Tholian designs to me but there are some I've never seen before.

Carpenter/Corelli:  Response
