T’Fearne regarded Kessler with composed calm, but a spark of humour gleamed in her obsidian eyes.

T'Fearne: I only interrogated you because you had not verified your identity sufficiently to prove to me you were not an imposter at the time, but Captain Winters vouched for you and she seemed trustworthy.

The Vulcazoid’s subtle sense of humour, poking at Kessler was both a sign that she was feeling more herself, recovering from the exotic radiation she had been exposed on the recent mission in the Ross 580 system, and a test to see what this promising new ensign would do. One could tell a lot about a Vulcanoid by their reaction or lack thereof to humour.

Kessler straightened, his grin faltering into theatrical offense.

Kessler: ::looking to Ryen and then back to T'Fearne:: What? I don't seem trustworthy? ::looking to Ryen:: I think my feelings might have just been hurt Ensign.

oO Lie! Oo

T’Feane suppressed her mirth and shook her head wryly. Enjoying Jack’s response. Ryen, to his credit, did not miss the shift in tone.

Ryen: Perhaps the Chief will have to make it up to you sometime.  Maybe, Lieutenant, you could arrange a department morale night, or at least a round of drinks once shore leave officially ends.

That had both of T'Fearne's brows rising on her forehead. Chief Carpenter, Kessler's predecessor, had a bottle of White Lightning, Nabraskan moonshine, in her desk drawer and she had shared a glass with members of her team over bonding moments or after a hard mission. Kessler was different, he had his own way of looking after his department. But what the ensign was suggesting was an interesting notion.

T'Fearne: That is not a bad idea, Ryen. And if it will soothe the Chiefs' hurt feelings, I’ll gladly drink him under the bar.

Jack cracked a smile at them both. Humor was the best ice breaker he knew and as much as he was still learning T'Fearne and her sense of humor, he was sure she was also trying to break the ice with her own humor. That was something he loved and wanted from his officers.

Kessler: Well, I can say this ensign. You and I are in the best hands Security has to offer. ::gesturing to T'Fearne:: If there is anyone I want at my side in the darkest of times, it's T'Fearne and the security on this ship.

T’Fearne felt a slight tightening in her throat at that and the gaze of the new ensign flicker over her. Her eartips might have flushed a little green at the Chief’s compliment. She was temporarily at a loss for words at that. But it felt good to have the trust she worked hard for.

She inclined her head slightly, accepting the praise.

Ryen:  I look forward to learning from both of you.  From what I've heard already, the Ronin has a reputation for staying busy.  I'm ready to do my part.

T'Fearne: That is a good attitude to have Ryen. There are many things to discover here, but it is also perilous at times. Vigilance will serve you well here, and being prepared.

Ryen nodded and looked around.

Kessler: We had a department wide briefing for all staff not on shore leave tomorrow morning at 0800 hours. I'd like to see you there so you can jump right in with both feet.

Ryen:  Aye, Lieutenant.  I'll be there.

T'Fearne: Yea, Sir.

Ryen:  I appreciate the warm welcome.  I'm looking forward to serving with both of you.

Now she did extend her fingers in the Vulcan ta’al1.

T'Fearne: Glad to have you aboard, Ensign.

As Ryen gazed around the complex, T’Fearne nodded and excused herself back to a standing  console.

She cast her thoughts over the new addition to Security, Jace Ryen. It was interesting to find another being, suspended between two worlds, not belonging fully to either, much like herself. Betazed was home, it held her family and memories, Vulcan was a distant mysterious pull, the Academy had been an intense time of focus and learning and the Ronin…the Ronin had been sinking deeper into her skin, its corridors to patrol, its systems to safeguard, its crew to protect. Slowly the Ronin had worked its way into her heart.

[End Scene for T’Fearne]

((OOC: ta’al1 - Vulcan - Common Vulcan gesture of Greeting, farewell.))
