to USS Ronin – StarBase 118 Star Trek PBEM RPG
((Ops, Deck One, Central Module, Deep Space Thirty Three))

The deck rang under her boots again but Agatha realized the shudder was from something far closer than fire striking the hull.  The defense teams were fighting a final desperate stand against the Alliance right on the other side of a bulkhead.

Raga: =/\= Raga to Ops, a group of Alliance troops just beamed in near the starboard airlock. I think they're going to try and decompress the entire deck! Can you block them? =/\=

Hunched over the ops console Agatha tapped in command after command, frantically trying to get any of the internal security systems back online. The main computer itself was barely responding.

Stergis: =/\= I'm going to randomizing the access pathways to the main computer in that whole section - should slow them down for at least a few minutes.  =/\=

MacKenna: =/\= Trying to reinforce the lockouts and initiate forcefields. =/\=

Raga: =/\= Copy, we’ll see if we can deal with them in the meantime. Raga out. =/\=

MacKenna: If they do that they will take out themselves too. Is that what this has come down to?

Agatha could hear a note of emotion in Ash's voice that forced her to look away from the internal sensors.

Stergis: Pretty much.  Their people have already written them off or they would've evacuated them before firing on the station.  Their only chance for survival at this point is to take the station and hope the Alliance still even want it.

Agatha shoved a shattered chunk of plexi off the corner of the ops table and let it clatter noisily to the floor.

Stergis:  Well, what's left of it anyway.

Another crackle, but the voice this time was soft and difficult to hear.

Hobart: =/\= ::whispered:: Hobart to Ops, can you hear me? We’re on Deck 1, behind the enemy. =/\=

Stergis : =/\= You've got pretty good timing Hobart.  =/\=

MacKenna: =/\= That could be in a number of places. Any other details? =/\=

Hobart: =/\= We’re in a storeroom in Section 5. Any chance you can get someone to us? =/\=

Stergis : =/\= Standby, internal sensors are a mess, there's activity all over the defensive line. =/\=

The next few moments of quiet concentration were broken only by the thudding of fingers on consoles and the equally percussive but much louder shriek of energy weapons fire nearby.  Phasers and disruptors firing in quick succession as she wrestled with the broken remains of the stations systems.

MacKenna: =/\= You seem to be on the other side of the airlock from Raga's team. And closer. =/\=

Ash looked to her and Agatha nodded quickly.

Stergis: =/\= Move to section bravo three and you can cut them off before they get to the life support controls. Commander Raga's team is trying to get there so watch for friendlies. =/\=

The channel closed and Agatha's display flickered out of existence again but to her enormous surprise, some still functioning element of their long range sensor array began chirping out an alarm.

MacKenna: More ships are dropping out of warp.

Stergis: What the Alliance lacks in brains it seems to make up for in brute force.

To her profound astonishment the ship that resolved on the sensors was identified by the stations computer a moment later and the small dot on the sensor display turned into a Starfleet Delta.

MacKenna: It's the Excalibur!

Stergis: I don't believe it.

The sensors painted an incredible picture of the Starfleet vessel slashing across the debris strewn battlefield and throwing themselves between the remaining Alliance forces and the crippled Starfleet defenders.  Agatha's knees went slightly week and she slumped into a tall workstool behind her.

Stergis: I'm still not sure I believe it.

The speakers crackled to life once more - this time seemingly more strongly.

Nicholotti: =/\= To all Lattice Alliance ships and forces; you have picked the wrong day and the wrong people to bring this fight to. You have ten minutes to withdraw, or I will take care of that for you. Your time starts now. =/\=

The cold fury evident in the Commodore's frosty declaration hit Agatha like a splash of water on a weary fighter and she sprang back up, her exhaustion pushed away one final time.

Stergis:  Now I believe it.  See if you can get a message through to the Excalibur, we need to reinforce our security teams.

MacKenna:  Response

The next few minutes felt like hours as the sound of fighting outside intensified while the newly arrived Excalibur and the barely functional Ronin fought an increasingly disorganized Alliance force.  Their superweapon ship lumbered back into motion and began firing on the crippled Khitomer but the Ronin dove across its path, taking hit after hit before delivering a precise salvo of torpedoes which crippled the massive Alliance craft.

Then Agatha's jaw dropped open.  One Alliance contact vanished from the sensors.  Then another...and a third...more streamed away as the Alliance outer perimeter collapsed, nearly all the remaining ships scattering on separate headings.  The Excalibur and the Ronin were doing everything they could to batter the few remaining vessels and the display, which had been nothing but red enemy contacts for as long as Agatha could remember, was almost empty now.

Stergis:  They did it.  They actually did it.  The Alliance is running.  Look!

MacKenna:  Response

Agatha's lips compressed into a terrifying smile as the tapped at the internal comm controls, opening a channel that should be heard in every compartment on every level where the comm net still functioned.

Stergis: =/\= Attention Lattice Alliance Forces, this is Commander Agatha Stergis, the commanding officer of this station.  Your fleet has abandoned you and is currently in full retreat.  You have no reinforcements or means of escape.  No one else has to die here today. You are ordered to surrender and lay down your weapons.  Surrender and you will not be harmed.  Attack any of our positions or offer resistance of any kind and I promise you will be.  This is our station.  Thirty-Three Stands.  You have two minutes to decide. Stergis out. =/\=

Agatha slumped into the workstool once again and dared to close her eyes for a moment, the sounds of weapons fire outside slackening till it was all but gone.

MacKenna:  Response

Agatha felt like laughing.  She knew it was a sign of shock and combat fatigue but she did it anyway.  When she managed to compose herself a minute or two later she found she had to brush tears out of her eyes.

Stergis:  Sorry, I just had the oddest thought...it's just...if the Alliance agrees to that surrender?  It'll be the first formal diplomatic success this station has had.  And the Ambassador wasn't even here.

Agatha laughed again and felt like she might toppled over.

MacKenna:  Response
