((Sickbay, Deck 10, USS Ronin))

As much as Ensign Wren's efforts had been able to do with his desk terminal, Karrod had begrudgingly accepted that the ship would need further confirmation of his existence before routine operations, like the locked doors to his quarters or the replicators which stubbornly refused to produce anything worthwhile, would become a bit more agreeable to his corporeal needs.  Irritated and hungry, he'd made his way to Sickbay where to his enormous relief their odious visiting Surgeon had vanished and Lieutenant JG. Shortrith was puttering about, replacing hypos and contentedly humming to themselves as they worked before noticing him leaning against a supply cabinet.

Shortrith: ::smiling softly:: Need I ask how long you've been standing here, Captain?

He offered a profound shrug as he headed to one of the biobeds.

Niac: According to the ship I'm not standing here at all.  Perhaps I'm some sort of specter...although you'd think the recently deceased would have less paddwork to tackle in the hereafter.

He shook his head an offered an annoyed laugh as the biobed chirped to life.

Shortrith: It's good to have you back.

The small smile hiding behind his beard was entirely genuine.

Niac: Thanks, it's good to be back, although I realize for the folks who didn't spend the last few weeks listening to the Admiralty drone on about the latest innovations in fleet logistical pipelines that takes on a slightly different meaning.  Part of me is sorry to have missed it if I'm honest.  Watching yourself die explosively is a small price to pay to avoid three hours of Fleet Admiral Robbins 'The United Federation of Fun - A Motivated Crew is a Happy Crew' seminar.

There was a small shared chuckle which passed into a companionable silence as the biobed affirmed that he was, in fact, amongst the living.

Shortrith: Sir, if I may, I'd like to run some scans just to double check that you're the Niac from our timeline.

Karrod rolled his eyes and tugged at his beard at the absurdity of it as Doctor Shortrith reached for a tricorder.

Shortrith: Apologies for the tediousness.

Niac: No fault of yours but if you start asking for tissue samples I'm going to assume this is all some elaborate prank.  Speaking of elaborate pranks, I hear our visiting surgeon was quite a handful.  She give you any trouble?

Shortrith: Response

Karrod chuckled and tried to remember the exact phase the woman had used.

Niac:  Well whatever happened she seemed...well, I'm not sure if impressed is the right word but she described your performance during the mission as 'notably adequate.'  I get the sense that's high praise coming from her, even if she did keep referring to you as Doctor Shortbread.  In her official report.

Shortrith: Response

Karrod barked out an entirely inappropriate laugh before pressing his lips back together and tugging at his beard.

Niac:  Well that's...hmmm.  Shame Lieutenant Vailani transferred, sounds like exactly the sort of person she would've loved to beat up in a back alley somewhere.  Not that I can condone that sort of thing...although you'd be surprised what the dead can get away with.

Shortrith: Response
