((Cockpit, USS Rhine, Outside the J-0922A System))

Lorana: Lieutenant? Can you check these frequencies? :: with a flick she moved the details to his console then turned to Syrex :: Exciting first away mission, Ensign?

The Caitian turned, her body twisted to face the ensign, tail hovered above her head.

Syrex: It’s certainly an interesting assignment ::Tapping at the console, then turning to Face Lorana:: I’m guessing its not routine for a freshly produced ensign to come on a mission of this… magnitude?

It was the commander who replied instead.

Alieth: In this crew we try to keep things ‘interesting’ for our rookies. :: A pause, with a significant tilt of the head:: Especially if they volunteer.

Luxa had to stifle a slight laugh as she thought about all of her assignments and none of them lacked interesting events. Indeed her first assignment on a starship was to beam down to a planet that had been struck by a meteorite that had caused the local population to go crazy with rage.

Raedai: Response

The conversation did not progress much further, as at that moment, a lot of flashing alarms popped up on all the consoles, the cockpit light turned crimson while the warning noises thundered out from all the stations.

Lorana: They’re scanning this section.

The runabout interior fell quiet as everyone remained silent, breath bated, muscles tense and frozen as the scanning scope was displayed on the main screen. As the scan shifted to another sector and the lights became amber one more time, there were at least a couple of deep sighs echoing in the cockpit.

Lorana: Looks like they worked. Crossing the cloaking barrier in under two minutes.

Luxa was beginning to refine the modulating frequencies, however there was still a lot of guesswork involved.

Alieth: Keep course and speed :: Towards the Romulan :: Can you use one of the probes to track the area they are scanning? A warning when it gets close next time would help.

Raedai: Response

Syrex: I hope that the scan saw us as debris, rather than ignoring us to pounce later…

Luxa understood the apprehension in the young officer's voice, it reminded her of when she was barely a cub, having left the homeworld.

To a new bold and dangerous adventure on the Y'Kiran, a Caitian transport ship.

Syrex: …but I don’t think that’s in the lattice alliances' nature to wait before attacking.

Alieth: We will take your concerns into account ensign, but as far as we know modulation works. :: There was trust in the know-how of her officers in that sentence :: We have successfully completed our first task.

Lorana: Don't worry Ensign Syrex, we're making good progress. All we have to do is focus on our tasks.

Raedai: Response

The young Trill looked at her console once more, and she seemed to see something that disturbed her.

Syrex: Commander, are you seeing debris coming towards us?

The Vulcan checked her monitors, Luxa immediately checked her systems and noticed the cluster mass. It was coming directly towards them.

Alieth: I see it Ensign, let us not worry about it for the time being but keep an eye on it.

Luxa tagged it, and set the systems to alert them and track it's movements.

Syrex: I hope it’s a coincidence, that I’m being too cautious or jumpy. Otherwise, they may be drawn towards something on the Rhine. That could alert someone if we are scanned again or when we cross the cloaking barrier.

Alieth: It is only to be expected that you will be apprehensive on your first away mission, Ensign, but remember your training and trust in your team.

Lorana: Commander, I'm seeing more clusters. Trying to get a reading through the interference from the S-Wave radiation.

Raedai: Response

Alieth: It seems that it is not the only thing moving in our direction, there are another ten moving forms moving among the asteroids. :: She thought for a second. :: Take a chance with a more active scan.

Lorana: Hold on. Polarising the shuttles scanners, this should help avoid detection.

Luxa's paws flashed across the console as she began the active scans, which were able to clear up the interference and her eyes grew wide as the readings came in. Not what she was expecting.

Raedai/Syrex: Response

Alieth: It is a gormagander pod. This can help us.

Luxa looked out the view screen window as through the asteroid field she saw the magnificent space creatures. Large, graceful beings that travelled through space. They were feeding from the alpha particles emitted from the asteroids.

Lorana: :: awed :: They are magnificent … I've never seen such a thing before..

Raedai/Syrex: Response

The structure scanned the gormagander pod seemingly satisfied by what they found before moving on.

Luxa knew that these creatures travelled in complex familial structures, travelling the galaxy and feeding as they went. Largely undisturbed by most races and it would seem even the LA weren't concerned with them either.

Alieth: Miss Lorana, follow them and squeeze between them, we will be disguised enough to get within a few hundred metres of that structure, even more if we cloack our armonics once more. We will have a good view of whatever that is.

Lorana: :: excited :: Understood.

Luxa activated the thrusters and with smooth precision the Rhine glided in amongst the creatures, allowing them an uninterrupted view of the amazing space whales.

Raedai/Syrex/Alieth: Response

Lorana: Look at them :: to Syrex :: You see the colouration of the underbelly, where the appendages tense … that's how they communicate with the younglings. It causes slight vibrations in the space between them. It's truly remarkable, we learnt about them in the academy. I've never had the pleasure of seeing them.

Raedai/Syrex/Alieth: Response

Lorana: We can review the scans when we get back to the Ronin.

She didn't bother finishing the sentence with ‘if’. There was no ifs.

Raedai/Syrex/Alieth: Response

Lorana: It's now or never. We're at the structure. Commander I can place the Rhine in a pattern with the gormagander pod. They're mid frenzy so they'll circle around for some time before moving on.

Raedai/Syrex/Alieth: Response

Lorana: That will work. I just need to adjust the flight pattern slightly. Are we ready?

Raedai/Syrex/Alieth: Response

Luxa waited until the Commander gave her the indication for the go ahead. She nodded.

Lorana: Transportation locked in. We'll have several minutes to get into our suits :: to Syrex :: We might need some more of those drugs?

Raedai/Syrex/Alieth: Response

((OOC - just moved us up to the structure now so we can beam over and get some intel on those generators!))
