It was good to see Jack Kessler again.  Rox had not even had a chance to grab coffee with him, but there was something comforting about having a member of the Oumuamua crew with her once more.  She'd been devastated to leave the ship she had come to call home, but now, with the benefit of hindsight, it was perhaps the most excellent thing to happen to her.  She hoped Jack would come to feel the same way about the seasoned vessel.  For the moment at least, her work was done and Jack was back on his feet.

Rox walked into the hall and headed to the isolation ward where a Suliban and a Kzinti were lying on biobeds.  Neither looked good. Skin blistering was visible and Rox new from reading the updates that the pair had incurred an extreme level of cellular damage.

Rox:  I'm not sure how much you'll get out of them, but Dr. La Croix is doing what she can for them.

Kessler: Will they survive their injuries?

De La Croix: They will not.  I'm mildly surprised they're still alive as is.  They've each been exposed to lethal levels of several different types of radiation and some sort of temporal or quantum field that the ancient computers on this steamship are completely unable to identify. They were dead before we ever encountered them...all we're doing is prolonging the inevitable.

Rox: ::blinking:: Wow.  Very blunt aren't you, Dr. La Croix

Seeing the pair Rox shuddered.  As poor as La Croix's bedside manner might have been, she was not wrong in prognosis.

Kessler: I do not doubt you are Doctor but you understand the importance of their survival?

De La Croix: Perhaps you'd care to explain that to their necrotic cellular membranes....the ones that haven't dissolved quite yet.  Might want to hurry though.

Rox glanced between Jack and La Croix.  There was clear tension, and Rox was reluctant to involve herself.  Given her earlier conversation with La Croix she was well aware of how the woman felt about her.

Kessler: ::turning to the others:: I feel like a fifth wheel here. This is more your area of expertise. What can we do?

Rox: I know only the most basic of treatments for radiation exposure, we mostly need to ease their pain.  Have we considered the use of Radiogardase or Diethylenetriamine pentaacetic acid to bind up the radioactive isotopes?

De La Croix:  Yes you're quite right, this is my area of expertise.  So perhaps you'll believe me this time when I say there's nothing we can do aside from making their final agonizing hours slightly less agonizing.  Fortunately for you, your prognosis is a bit less dire.  Nurse, did you collect those samples I requested?  I want to begin the analysis on his protein sheaths as soon as possible.

Rox sighed raising her eyebrows.

Kessler: Isn't this fun?

Rox: ::deep breath::  No I have not doctor.  Lt. Shortrith has released him for duty so…

She didn't finish her thought.

De La Croix:  Then perhaps you should escort this patient back to bed and get them before he faints again.  Speaking of, you seem to be unusually sensitive to radiation exposure Lieutenant.  I don't suppose you have any idea why that might be?

Rox: ::whispering::  Walk away.

Kessler: Actually Doc, I have several ideas. Perhaps I could provide you a tactical report on what might be causing these unusual reactions based on the unknown we were in.

Jack did not walk away and Rox was hardly surprised.  While it would be ideal to try to tally all everything going on with Jack, it would involve not just the aftermath of their last mission, but also his captivity with the Zet, his various injuries on other missions and his genetics.  La Croix did not understand that at this moment, on this starship, there was not time for that.

De La Croix:  That's not exactly what I had in mind.  I simply don't want you toppling over some torpedo and killing us all because you have an atypical thyroid gland.  But I suppose I'm to continue toiling away in the dark.

Tucker: =/\= Greetings, Ronin’s will Lieutenants Kessler, Nemes, and Evinrud,e please report to the Runabout Sojourn immediately and bring your Hazardous Duty Environmental Suits, please. Tucker, out =/\=

Rox was disappointed that Marty hadn't called her too.  While she knew whatever was happening was likely dangerous, the company would have been better.

Kessler: Sorry Doc. Duty calls. You can have that fluid check when I get back.

Rox had not seen Jack beat such a hasty retreat in a long time.  She turned to La Croix and offered up a goofy smile.

Rox:  So, how was your first away mission?

De La Croix: Response

Rox:  That goes with the territory.  Always an adventure out here.

De La Croix: Response

Rox moved to a nearby table and picked up a tablet. She turned to head into the isolation ward where the Kzinti and the Suliban seemed to be moving in discomfort.

Rox: I'm going to check our patients and then I'm going to read them some poetry.

De La Croix: Response

Rox: ::annoyed::  Mary Oliver, ok?  ::sniffs::  I don't know who they are but there's no reason to let them lay there and die alone.  At least they can hear a gentle voice once last time.

De La Croix: Response

Rox turned and walked into the isolation room.  Despite the bright lights and the glow of the LCARs displays, Rox felt she was walking into a dark cave.
