((L'Éclat d'Étoile, matière de station))
The restaurant reminded her of Sickbay on a busy day. People running this way and that with trays, glasses and other accoutrements. The great dome over the dining space revealed that night had fallen and the sky above was filled with twinkling stars. The dome must have magnified the stars somewhat as there were red, blue, white and yellow points of light. Near the bottom of the dome, the windows to the surface revealed the biological glow of green, blue, yellow and orange plants. Rox imagined their biochemistry would be most interesting.
Tucker: Table for two, 1900 hours.
Rox had barely noticed that had moved to the host station.
Matirere De: Ah, yes, Mister Tucker and Miss Queen, we’ve been expecting you. If you follow her,:: he nodded at a Bolian waitress in a tuxedo top and skirt:: she’d get you settled in for the evening.
Rox: This is quite a place. You spoil me too much, it's gonna go to my hea..
Marty's hand wrapped around hers and they traveled across the gallery of patrons to the table they had secured. Both of them could sit side by side and enjoy the view of the stars above them. She raised a menu, but Marty nudged her, encouraging her to look up once more.
Tucker: Amazing.. ::he squeezed her hand::
Rox: ::resting her head on his shoulder:: It is really. ::squeezing his hand:: Thank you for all of this.
Tucker: You are very welcome, m’dear.
Rox: ::looking at him:: Look I want you to know that I fully plan to enjoy all of this. ::gesturing around the room:: But at the same time if we had to have peanut butter sandwiches and Kool-Aid in a Jefferies tube, I'd still be happy to be there, with you.
Tucker: ::he smiled brightly:: Sounds good to me.
The Bolian woman returned to take their order. Was overcome by the list of options, but settled on Ramufta and a Ceasar salad with a Stardrifter. While they waited they gazed at the stars once more.
Rox: When I was a little girl they had these rolling blackouts for a while. All the city light would go out and I could sit on my bed and look up at space from my window. Probably what made me want to travel.
Tucker: I used to go out deep in the vineyard, on one of the larger hills and lay under the stars dreaming what it would be like to travel the stars, fixing things.
Rox: It was nice. ::beat:: Until the lady below us started yelling at her cats. ::nodding her head side to side:: Then the guy across the street would start swearing at her.
Tucker: Sounds like an interesting neighborhood. Our closest neighbor was about 16 kilometers away. So there was no yelling at cats. ::he chuckled:: though sometimes it was too quiet.
Rox was noticing that their relationship had a very country mouse-city mouse vibe. She wondered if he would eventually tire of her crazy urban stories and look for someone more like him. It was a problem for future Rox.
Rox: ::chuckling:: I do sort of miss Edith. I knew all her cats by name and sometimes I'd recite them to help me get to sleep.
Tucker: Do I really want to know how many cats?
Rox: Probably not. It was as high as 12, but never fewer than 8.
It wasn’t long before the waitress returned with Rox’s salad. She took a few bites hating to eat in front of Marty.
Tucker: So then this begs the question, are you a cat or dog person? Me, I’m totally a cat person. They can take care of themselves for the most part, and don’t need to give the cat constant attention like you would a dog, and a cat would be better for starship travel.
Rox hurriedly pushed a bite of salad into her mouth and nodded her head side to side. Stray cats had been endemic on Turkana IV and Rox had come to regard them as pests rather than pets. There were whole areas that reeked of them and down one particular alley was a huge cat called Tommy which hissed and clawed at any passersby.
Rox: I'm afraid I've never really had a pet.
She glanced as Marty savored his steak and bourbon. She couldn't help but think that his liver enzyme profile must be fascinating. If he smoked even more so. She took several bites of her food. She preferred a wide variety of flavors and textures and this meal was delivering on that.
Marty: I promised myself we wouldn’t talk ‘shop’ while we were eating, but I'm curious to know how the dynamic in the medical division is working right now.
Rox: ::giving him a sly look:: Well, Dr. Beck is back so I guess it's back to whatever passes for normal.
She took a swig of her Stardrifter.
Tucker: This steak is fantastic. How’s your dinner?
Rox had just put a large bite of stew in her mouth.
Rox: ::giving a thumbs up:: Funf-thastic ::swallowing:: Very good.
The ate quietly for several moments looking through the dome of the restaurant and the stars beyond Lolagi IV. It was a brilliant view.
Tucker. ::pointing up:: Hey, Rox, there’s the Ronin, the last place I want to be right now. I’m very happy with the company I have at this table.
She smiled and leaned in to place a kiss on his cheek.
Rox: I'm not sure I could be more content than I am right now.
Tucker: You going to be up for some dessert? ::he waggled his eyebrows::
Rox: Heck yeah!
Marty nodded and politely waved their waitress over.
Tucker: Could we get your dessert menu? I hear your pastry chef is a craftswoman.
Rox raised an eyebrow. They went back to their quiet contemplation until Rox noticed something out of place. The French guy who had been at the front of the restaurant was walking directly toward their table. His face still bore a look of indifference, but Rox wondered what had prompted him to leave his post. He placed a small padd on the table and slid it between them. He quickly turned on his heal and left. Rox looked down at the padd.
Rox: That jerk! The Captains recalling us. ::looking at Rox:: Why is he recalling us now?
Tucker: Response
The pair stood up and left the table. There was no use arguing about it, they'd only end up in the brig if they didn't return. Given Raga and Niac's obsession with punishing the crew she was sure they'd come up with something sadistic. They were soon walking down the corridor back toward their room.
Rox: I'm not even sorry I reprogrammed all his padds to sing that song.
Tucker: Response
Back in their room they began to hurriedly throw things into their respective bags. Marty seemed particularly upset. She knew he'd missed out on the date she had planned and given the extravagance, he'd clearly gone all out for her. She walked over behind him and wrapped her arms around him, placing her head on his back.
Rox: You know, it will take them like an hour to track everyone down, so we could certainly take a little time. It would be a shame not to see what this bed is like.
Tucker: Response
Rox: Computer, lights out.
