((OOC: Happens before “Can This Just Be An Email?”))
Marty sat at his desk in his quarters. It was well before shift change, but he’d been restless the last few nights. He was reasonably sure it was a hangover from the mission; it had left him bone-tired. He had several padds in front of him, one of which was his mission report. Something that he had been dreading, he somehow needed to explain to command why he left Evinrude to his own devices aboard the freighter Audit Trap. Marty might charge it to a giant ass SNAFU and move on, but he was pretty sure the captain and the XO weren’t going to shrug it off. He reached across the desk, grabbed his mug of now-cold raktajino, and swallowed what was left.
So that was something he was going to have to deal with sooner rather than later.
He picked up another PADD This one was a service record that had almost slipped past him. The officer in question came aboard with their new Security and Tactical guru, Lieutenant Kessler. The name across the top read, “Cabrillo, TK”. Not only was he an engineer, but it seemed he dabbled in the Tactical side of things, which Marty was a bit unsure about. The man’s record was top-notch and a model Sfarfeet office by the looks of it, but would he fit into the structure of the USS Ronin’s Engineering Department? He had a few questions for the Lieutenant.
Marty pushed back from his desk and stood up. He buttoned his tunic, tugging at the hem of the bottom. After a glance in the mirror, he decided he needed more caffeine but didn’t want to make any. He was considering stopping by the Brew Continuum informally. It probably wouldn’t be too busy, since it was relatively calm before shift change, which was the busiest time.
He mentally crossed his fingers and tapped his combadage.
Tucker: =/\= Chief Tucker to Lieutenant Cabrillo.. =/\=
There was a pregnant pause before he heard Cabrillo on the other end. He couldn’t quite tell if he’d woken the man up or not.
Cabrillo: =/\= Response =/\=
Tucker: =/\= I hope I didn’t wake you, Lieutenant. Could you meet me at the Brew Continuum in, say, twenty minutes? =/\=
Cabrillo: =/\= Response =/\=
Marty nodded even though he knew he couldn’t be seen; it was a habit more or less.
Tucker: =/\= That’s good to hear, Lieutenant. I’ll see you there.
((Time Skip 10 minutes, Deck 14, Brew Continuum, USS Ronine))
Marty arrived at the door for Brew Continuum and stood aside as the door swung open, revealing two crew members exiting. He nodded at the two and went in. The lights were dim, indicating that they were still in Delta shift and would gradually come up, signifying day, in about half an hour. Marty stood in what was a very short line, something of a rarity when it came to the Brew Continuum.
After ordering his raktajino, Marty settled in a cozy spot at the back of the store, where he could observe everyone coming and going. Occasionally, he would come here to focus on work, preferring it over being confined to his office or quarters.
He looked at Cabrillo’s service jacket again to ensure he was familiar with the new engineer, or at least new to the Ronin. He heard the doors swish open in the quiet of the Brew Continuum. He was pretty sure the person walking through was Cabrillo. Hopefully, he’d grab a drink, as Marty waved briefly to show him where he was.
Marty stood as the man approached and held out his hand.
Tucker: Good to finally get a chance to talk to you, Lieutenant. Things have been busy, as you know. ::pointing to the seat opposite him:: Have a seat.
Cabrillo: Response
Tucker: I hope the Quartermaster has got everything sorted out.
Marty took a sip of his raktajino and was kicking himself for not getting one of the tasty pastries they always had on hand. The Chef and his team had to be working overtime. It was a well-oiled machine when it came to the Culinary Crew of the Ronin.
Cabrillo: Response
Tucker: I see you've joined us with our new Security and Tactical Chief, Lieutenant Kessler. How are you settling into life on this old warhorse?
Marty listened as the man talked, taking a sip of his drink.
