(( Station Security Office - Promenade, DS9 ))
(((OOC: My apologies for my severely belated response. I’m unfortunately STILL very sick, but I’ll slowly start working my way through the backlog.)))
Gila thought herself infinitely blessed that this faulty paperwork that had prompted her to require security screening hadn’t occurred when she - as an Ensign - boarded the USS Artemis. Having a security interview conducted on her already very anxiety-ridden self would’ve, for sure, made her strike out on every possible question and would have cut her service woefully short. And yet, in spite of her knowing that any self-doubt or anxiety wouldn’t reflect well on her interview, she couldn’t stop sweat from accumulating in the creases of her nuchal folds, nor could she stop the dry taste of oatmeal tainting her tastebuds.
A clear sign of growing panic.
oO Keep it together, Gila! Oo
T’Fearne: Actually, Sir, before we begin the formal portion of the interview… :: Shifting her gaze to a hidden list of wildcard questions, then returned her keen focus to the medical officer:: I need to confirm that you are the same Gila Sadar, who attended the academy from 2397 to 2400. A recommendation note from Starfleet officers attached to your Academy acceptance file. Please tell me who this person is to you and how you met?
Gila blinked, confused. She wondered what bearing that had on the interview itself, but it wasn’t like it was anything particularly clandestine or off-the-record information, so nodding, she opted to respond.
Sadar: Captain Jaume Mata of the USS Indefatigable. He was doing a supply run to the Federation colony on Mizar IV, where I was staying, and, uhh... I-I was able to assist him with an incident with a collapsed mine.
The memories of the cave-in, the scent of the gaseous vapors filling the mine shaft, the sounds of the choking miners... They were all memories so distant - 10 years in the past - that they no longer held the fear that she’d previously attributed to them, but she recalled how scared she’d been, and how close she’d been to running away in spite of her promise. Nevertheless, she’d stuck with it, and for whatever reason, Captain Mata had chosen to punish her with even more challenges...
Though, at this junction, Gila supposed she could see his recommendation as a gift, or stamp of approval instead. In spite of herself, she’d grown with the charge, and she supposed, if she had to be entirely truthful: she much preferred the Gila of today to the Gila of yesteryear.
T’Fearne: I have engaged additional security measures to ensure the confidentiality of our discussion and that we won't be interrupted except by a station emergency. :: voice firm:: This interview is being recorded in both holo and audio formats. T’Fearne Elaazni, Ensign, Security Officer assigned to The USS Ronin - NCC-34523 acting as interview certifier. Please state your name, rank, and current duty assignment.
It was time. And somehow, that completely overruled what minimal amount of calm and confidence that Gila had tried to establish, and she was reduced to an anxious mess as she started twisting her anxiety band in response to the formality of the situation.
Sadar: Y-Yes, of course. Doctor Gila Sadar, Lieutenant, Medical Officer assigned to the USS Artemis - designation NCC-81287.
T’Fearne: Thank you Sir. :: slight pause:: Have you ever had any business or personal dealings with an intelligent species that holds a grudge against the Federation?
Gila blinked.
oO Do xenophobic religious extremists count? Or gossip-mongering podcast journalist mothers? And does ‘business or personal dealings’ involve the arrest of Suliban pirates? Oo
After a few moments of deliberations, she determined that the answer was ‘probably not’.
Sadar: ::considers:: Beyond being part of a species that actively broke a trade agreement with the Federation within the last 30 years, no.
T’Fearne: Are you currently involved in any ongoing intimate relationships with Starfleet personnel aside from those listed as your spouse/spouses or life partner/partners?
Sadar: No.
T’Fearne: To your best judgement, do you have any prior relationships that ended badly that could lead to a compromise in the security or safety of your crewmates or the Federation?
Sadar: …
Gila was fully prepared to answer no with the same immediacy as to the previous answer, but for some reason, her mind instead propelled her back in time. She recalled the cold eyes and cruel words of the son left behind, the callous disregard with which she was regarded for her inadequacy... The way that she’d justified her failure to accept responsibility...
T’Fearne: Response
The Vulcan’s voice brought Gila back to her senses, even as she tried to forget the scalding memory of his eyes following her through camp, his hatred simmering just under the surface, waiting for a chance to burn her.
Sadar: Oh, uhh, sorry... No.
T’Fearne: Response
Sadar: P-Part of service as a Doctor means that you deal with people at their lowest. Sometimes, you lose patients and the news shatters the lives of those left behind... But, in response to your question, no, I don’t think anyone’s grudge against my shortcomings as a physician are grave enough to risk the safety of the Federation.
