((ooc sorry this got lost and I didn’t see it! Added just a bit))

Taj’el had followed along dutifully as T’Fearne, their new Vulcanoid acquaintance, who preferred the term Vulcanzoid, led them onward. It seemed they were being brought to a self-defense class. Taj’el had possessed limited combat experience, as their primary role had been medical; however, they had practiced Suus Mahna for both meditation and physical conditioning. They had been quietly grateful that this was a hand-to-hand course, as their proficiency with a phaser had been minimal. They had lacked experience in applying such a weapon against another individual.

As T’Fearne had changed, Taj’el had done the same, selecting a half-skirt, half-pant garment and a fitted training top. They had opted to retain simple flat footwear as they followed along, noting the presence of two unfamiliar individuals before them.

Solana: Here for the CQC class?

Wren: Yes! ::shoving her still-wet vial into her pocket, smoothing it:: I wasn’t sure what we should wear, I hope this is okay ::she is wearing a variation of the skant uniform that ends in shorts rather than the standard skirt::

T’Fearne: Jenta. Delphina. ::her gaze flicked briefly over Wren’s attire, assessing function rather than form:: Freedom of movement is the main priority with garment choice. That looks fine.

T’Fearne: This is Junior Lieutenant Taj’el, they are on temporary assignment to Ronin's medical department from The Thor. Taj’el, this is Ensign Delphina Wren of our engineering department and Senior Chief Petty Officer Jenta Solana also of security.

Taj’el bowed their head to the others in a subdued greeting. Though they had, in truth, been compelled to attend, they recognized the value in the instruction. They observed the two unfamiliar individuals, evaluating them in their own manner.

Solana: Welcome. Hope you’ve found your time with the Ronin pleasant so far. ::she smirked:: We can be a handful sometimes. ::to everyone:: So, who here besides T’Fearne needs a brush up on self-defence?

Taj’el: I suppose it is prudent to have it, just in case.

Wren: ::awkwardly raising her hand:: We… did cover self-defense in the academy. One class for every year.

T’Fearne: The academy provides a good foundation. ::measured:: But their classes for the most part are controlled environments. The Alpha Isles are less accommodating. It is logical to refine one’s defensive capability accordingly. ::to Taj’el:: What of the Thor’s current mission? You are operating in the Gamma Quadrant, are you not?

They nodded slightly. The Gamma Quadrant had often proven… irregular, and they had relied on others; however, it remained prudent to develop a more comprehensive understanding of defensive practices.

Solana: Like T’Fearne said. The Academy gives us a good start, but the rest of the galaxy will push us to need more than that.

T’Fearne: ::To Wren:: Have you done any training in Tassa'Akai1?

Wren: I… have not, but I’ve seen other people do it. My brother took it in high school, and I went to a couple of matches.

Taj’el: Betazoid martial arts? I did not; however, I practices Suus Mahna.

T’Fearne: I competed semi-professionally on Betazed from 88 to 91. It’s the non standard weapon that I am most proficient with.

It was… fascinating. It had also been logical that a security officer would train extensively and maintain a high level of proficiency. They had remained uncertain how they would perform in an actual confrontation; however, they had assessed themselves to be sufficiently competent.

Solana: Impressive.

Wren: ::a little awkwardly:: Non-Standard?

T’Fearne: ::offering to Solana:: You may use me to demonstrate if you like.

Taj’el took the knife and examined it, noting it was prudent that it was not real. They glanced toward Wren, who appeared to favor the concept of the weapon. They assessed that Wren seemed the most uncertain among the group, yet still demonstrated an interest in learning. That, they concluded, was the first step in accomplishing such tasks.

Solana: Certainly, though I hope you don’t regret that tomorrow. ::she chuckled and addressed them all:: These are training knives, which when we’re done you’ll at least know which end goes into the other person. But the basis on close quarters combat doesn’t require a weapon. In fact, a lot of times you might find the only way to protect yourself is with your own hands and body.

Taj’el: I would have hoped one would know the correct end of a knife prior to this class.

T’Fearne: Response

Wren: ::poking the tip of the training knife with a mixture of curiosity and apprehension:: oO…. Wait, is this modeled after those Andorian flute-daggers? I’ve been trying to get ahold of one of these because they’re supposed to be hard to play. Oo ::no longer fully paying attention::

Solana: Since I know T’Fearne has some training we’ll warm up with some sparring a few minutes. Then I’ll teach you some basic movements and several different scenarios and how to protect yourself during them. First lesson..

Taj’el covered their face as sand had been thrown upward. They displayed a measure of annoyance as they stepped back and brushed the debris from their clothing.

Solana: Your opponent will not always fight honorably.

It had been… annoying, yet accurate. They held out their arm to ensure both Wren and themselves were kept at a distance from the two entering their sparring session. It had been, in truth, impressive; the pair had clearly known what they were doing.

Wren: ::softly:: I don’t think I can do that, I- she said this was a beginner class.

Taj’el: They may be attempting to impress you. If it had been stated that this was a class for beginners, they will not expect more from you. They will teach you the basics

It had been their unusual way of offering reassurance as they watched, pulling on their gloves while considering whether it had been better to keep them on or remove them for such an activity.

T’Fearne/Solana: Response

They watched the two carefully as they pushed one another, noting their movements. They then turned toward the ensign, who had been moving about in an attempt to observe and learn what the other officers were doing.

Wren: ::to Taj’el:: Wait, how did she do that? It looked like- ::realizing that Taj’el seems to be following this closer than her:: Do you remember any of this being covered at the academy?

Taj’el: The basics, yes. Watch their fundamentals before attempting to copy everything. Observe where their feet are positioned, and their hips.

They had come over and carefully adjusted Ensign Wren’s stance, repositioning her feet into a standard, balanced posture. They had then adjusted her hips to demonstrate proper alignment and movement, as many individuals generated power through the hips. Good balance had been the foundation of any fighting style.

T’Fearne/Solana: Response

Taj’el: Foundation is key, and most of your power will come from your hips. Males tended to have more arm power, with exceptions, of course. I am sure they will go over it further; however, I believed they were simply having fun now.

T’Fearne/Solana/Wren: Response

Taj’el: Different styles focused on different things. They are focused more on trading and blocking attacks. Suus Mahna, however, is more evasive and centered on redirecting attacks. I admit I do not know much about Tassa’Akai beyond its cultural background.

T’Fearne/Solana/Wren: Response

They had thought it best to leave further instruction to the teacher. They had not wished to confuse the ensign with unnecessary detail, though they had hoped they had at least established a useful foundation. They then adjusted their own stance into a basic position, wide, but balanced.

Taj’el: Impressive, to you both. I can see you are clearly proficient in your abilities.

T’Fearne/Solana/Wren: Response
