to USS Ronin – StarBase 118 Star Trek PBEM RPG
((Idiots Gas Chamber, Sickbay, Deck 10, USS Ronin))
De La Croix: Need...a...filter...or...patients...will...die...
The room seemed to blast apart around her as the lights failed only to be replaced by pyrotechnics from every nearby console and biomonitor. She stumbled backwards away from the destruction and realized the privacy field had fallen, allowing the gas to continue filling the entire compartment. She found it difficult to regain her balance as her head swam through the haze of sedative.
Avae: Hang on, Thess! Stars, please tell me we’re not being attacked.
Her eyes were drooping shut and she was wavering on her feet when the senior nurse pressed a hypo to her neck and relief flooded through her. Muzzled senses and muddy thinking gave way to groggy clarity as the air handlers restarted and began purging the compartment entirely. Mercifully, the children had succumbed to the gas much more quickly and lay in various heaps where they had fallen. She felt some small measure of compassion was called for.
De La Croix: Do you think any of them are dead? And what was all that calamity with the lights? It's like trying to work in some surreal carnival funhouse on this ship.
Avae: Oh, no. No sleeping. Something just caused a power surge that’s affecting Sickbay’s systems. We need to help those people in Ward A.
Thess shook her head to clear the last of the haze from her vision before rubbing at her temples and pinching the bridge of her nose. She needed to regain her footing.
De La Croix: Am I to assume the responsibility for this basic triage falls to me, a Surgeon? Wouldn't you rather have me here, standing by for the really challenging cases?
Avae: Well, I’d rather have a fully functioning Sickbay, but since we don’t you’ll have to do. I’ll grab Rox.
Thess glared at the woman's back but followed her and even offered a small measure of assistance gingerly propelling the mostly inert Nurse as the anesthetic counter-agent struggled to take hold.
De La Croix: Pull yourself together young lady, I am certain this is not the first time you've stumbled drunkenly and we have patients to treat. There you go...one foot in front of the other....
The scene that greeted them in Ward A was like something out of a crisis simulation. Bad lighting, a scattering of random patients with no support staff or information at her disposal. Abundant, visible wounds and the sounds of misery and suffering.
Thess has rarely felt so profoundly alive as she did in that moment.
Avae: Oh, for Star’s sake. ::to Thess:: Torches are in the Twibble cabinet.
She clapped her hands together with undisguised glee as the first real opportunity she'd had to practice medicine since coming aboard the ship lay sprawled out in front of her.
De La Croix: Well then....who's first?!
She held out a hand for a medical tricorder began assessing patients as the panels flickered behind them.
