((Deck 14, Main Engineering, The Pool Table, USS Ronin))
In the main engineering section of the USS Ronin, Lieutenant Dohna T'Alia was working to follow the instructions of Acting Captain Kel to get the ship’s warp drive back online. At the moment, the Ronin was unable to form a stable warp and so could not go anywhere quickly if needed. T'Alia had tried Vulcan logic and Bajoran spirituality to no avail. Now she hoped Lieutenant Morgan and Ensign Zh'Thaan could come up with something. Fortunately, they had. Now the question was who was in the best position to execute it. Chip was on the bridge. T'Alia did not know Chip well, in fact being new to the Ronin, she knew no one well. As a result she felt it was most logical to have the operation executed from Main Engineering where she could best support it.
Dohna: I suggest we handle this from here. ::beat:: Strongly.
T'Alia moved once more to the pool table and brought up the system display for the deflector. It was slowly powering up.
Dohna: Question. The Intrepid-class starships have very powerful deflector systems. The Ronin's is ::beat:: smaller. Will it be enough?
Morgan: It should be? ::she gave a tight shrug:: as I said, I think this is the second time we’ve ever used the deflector dish, in a fashion. We have the means to replicate certain parts of the deflector dish. But we sure as hell don’t have a backup; our backup is waiting at DS33 if we ever get back there.
The Andorian Ensign spoke up.
Zh'taan: ::turns to Dohna:: The deflectors are our only solution. With them, we’ll push back the chronitons, and they are powerful enough for that. oO I hope… Oo
Dohna: My only concern is that if we overload it pushing out the chronitons, we won't have it to protect us as we're traveling at warp speed.
Morgan: We wouldn’t be able to do anything other than sit here; we lose the deflector, we don’t move. Even on thrusters, a micro-meteor could rip through the hull. I’m hoping to make both pulses omnidirectional, which will help. ::looking up at Zh’taan:: I know we’re a bit away from it for now, but keep an eye on the forming temporal black hole.
T'Alia continued to watch the deflector carefully continue to power up.
oO phekk! Oo
She'd forgotten about the temporal black hole. She had not accounted for it in their plan to use the deflector.
Dohna: What do we have it emit? You now to push out the chronitons.
Morgan: ::looking at Dohna:: Anti-chronitons.
Zh'taan: ::turns to Dohna:: We need to emit anyon particles to destroy or disperse the chronitons. However, we must be careful, because destroying too many chronitons could amplify the effects of the black hole. We must act only in a way that disperses enough chronitons to allow a stable warp field to form.
Dohna: Anyon particles, got it.
The deflector power had almost reached 50% and T'Alia began making the needed adjustments so that the deflector would emit the needed anti-chronitons.
Morgan: To answer your question from earlier, I don’t think we could use the phaser arrays for the anyon pulse. To do it, we’d be utterly defenseless. And I’d rather we not have our pants around our ankles if the Alliance decides to show up.
Dohna: ::thinking:: There are several probes in the system, perhaps we can use them to ensure no one will catch us "with our pants down".
For now the use of the phaser banks was out of the questions, but given the reports of Tholians on the surface T'Alia shared Rachel's concern that they may not be alone in the system.
Zh'taan: Understood. ::He monitors the external probes to make sure no enemy presence is approaching::
Dohna: I think the programing is ready. Would you double check me Lt. Morgan?
Morgan: Response
The deflectors were now at 75%.
Zh'taan: The black hole is still at an acceptable distance, Lieutenant. ::He keeps a watchful eye on both the black hole and the chronitons around the ship.::
T'Alia glanced over to the display where the distance to the black hole was shown. She'd missed it earlier, but the temporal black hole was only 50,000km away. They'd traveled to one of the inner plantes from the outer part of the system where they'd first detected it. What could that mean? Had it grown? Had it traveled?
Dohna: Wait, the black hole shouldn't be that close.
Morgan: Response
Power was now at 95%. Only a minute or two left before the anti-chroniton particle pulse.
Zh'taan: The deflectors will soon emit the anti-chroniton particles around the ship. Perhaps we should already start activating the warp field so that the deflector pulse and the warp field are synchronized. ::He lifts his eyes from the LCARs and turns to the two women, speaking calmly, perhaps a little too calmly:: I’m detecting a massive concentration of chronitons around the ship, and I fear that once the pulse is emitted, the area around us will be filled with chronitons again. But if the warp field forms at the same time the pulse destroys the chronitons, it should have time to stabilize before the chronitons reform around the Ronin.
Dohna: Lt. Morgan will you get ready to initiate the warp field? I'll monitor the pulse with Ensign Zh'taan.
Morgan: Response
T'Alia's muscles tensed as the power crept up the final 5% needed. Once it hit 100% she activated the sequence to flood the space with anti-chronitons. There were no obvious changed to the room, which was a promising sign.
Dohna: Emitting particles now.
Zh'taan/Morgan: Response
Something was wrong. There had been only minimal dispersion of the chronitons around the Ronin. She ran a diagnostic of the emitter.
Dohna: The emitter is working, but all the anti-chronitons are going straight ahead of the ship. ::beat:: Into the black hole.
Zh'taan/Morgan: Response
Dohna: Maybe we could rotate the ship?
Zh'taan/Morgan: Response
