Tucker: I think it’s time to go back to the drawing board and quickly, because we can’t seem to come to an agreement. I’d volunteer, ::he held up a hand to stop Jack:: But our security chief will remind me of some regulations about our particular predicament…and I get it. I don’t like it, but I get it.
Evinrude: I won't argue. ::He smiled again.:: I want to, but I won't. ::To Kessler.:: Lieutenant, you have more experience and training. I hope it serves you well.
Tucker: ::smiling:: Funny you mention that.
Tucker tossed Kessler a small oblong canister, unfamiliar to Evinrude. Kessler started to speak, but the engineer cut him off.
Tucker: ::putting a hand up:: I know you have questions, Mister Kessler and we can discuss them at a later date, but what you hold in your hand is a thermo-pastic grenade. You can either set a timer or just pull the pin and yeet it. It will explode into liquid plastic that immediately hardens. You get your opponent caught up in it, know they ain’t getting out without the right chemical solvent. And I’ve got two more left in my bag, and I brought my last EMP grenade. We used both items in the retaking of Deep Space 33.
Kessler: ::grinning:: OK, that's officially cool.
Tucker: If we set up three of them in a triangle pattern we should be able to cover the entire area and seal off the tunnel, and they won't be able to phaser their way out because of the EMP.
Kessler: Agreed.
As they worked to rig up an extra safety cable to the lift's carriage, one of the thick metal wires sprung from its mooring, lashing out at Sybil
Evinrude: Sybil! Watch--
His friend dodged, saving herself from the whipcrack of high-tension cable, but she had fallen into Tess. When he looked down, they all saw it - a long gash in her suit, caused by a bare-metal corner of some piece of equipment.
Marty made the call, setting up some miniature pattern enhancers that would be good for the trip to the Ronin from here, but likely useless further down.
Tucker: ::whispering:: One to beam directly to decon, now.
Tess gave a firm nod and a reassuring smile as Nemes vanished into a blue shimmer. It had all happened so fast...
oO I think I saw blood coming from the gash in her suit... Oo
What mattered is that she was safe; they could debrief later.
Tucker: I’m open to options. It’s three of us now. Should we just ride this thing down and hope we don’t come to a sudden and complete halt? That would be bad. But first, they needed to take care of the Tholians, so they didn’t have to run everywhere just to avoid them.
Tess gave a thumbs-up, indicating that the lift was as ready as it would ever be.
Tucker: So, where do you think we set these charges to get a full spread? Each pumps out enough thermoplastic to cover about 40 meters.
Kessler: The contact points you indicated ::looking at his wrist tricorder:: do appear to provide maximum coverage for the devices.
Evinrude: ::To both senior officers.:: The lift is ready. ::After a beat.:: You know, maximum coverage means we'll have to find another escape route...
Tucker: Well, whatever we’re going to do, we need to do it now; they’re getting closer.
Kessler nodded and finished placing the charges that would, hopefully, keep the Tholians away.
Kessler: I think we can release the overrides so that this thing will continue down on it's own, Evinrude, can you bypass the lockout for the speed descent control so it moves a little faster than a snail?
Evinrude: ::With a thoughtful look, Tess began to tinker with the controls.:: I can certainly go from snail to turtle. ::He glanced back over his shoulder, briefly, his expression serious.:: With maybe one more trick up my sleeve...
He turned back around and worked as quickly as he could. He could set the lift's winch to let them free-fall, for a short distance. The system understandably had safety shutouts that prevented too long of a free fall, lest the shock on the cables once they were taut again cause them to snap. But even a short distance would give them a head-start.
Tucker: Response
Kessler: Time to go gents. All aboard the express elevator to...::beat:: Wherever it is we are going.
Jack drew his phaser as Tucker and Evinrude stepped on the lift. It began to descend under power, slowly but picking up speed. Just as Lieutenant Kessler seemed to spot something the modification triggered, and the winch began to spool out cable as fast as the weight of Tucker, Evinrude, and the lift itself could fall.
Evinrude: Hang onto something, Chief! We're about to experience some serious whiplash!
Tucker: Response
A split-second later, the safety override kicked in, applying a braking force that screamed out with the same decibels as a station-sized dynamo. Tess held onto the lift's short railing with all the strength he could muster, and wrapped a leg around one of the posts for extra support.
Kessler: ::looking down below and then back up overhead:: Commander, how long do you think that stuff will slow down the Tholians?
He could barely hear Kessler, either because of the distance or because of the blood-rushing sound in his head.
Evinrude: ::Catching his breath, he muttered.:: Well that...was a thrill... ::To Tucker, louder.:: You okay, sir?
