to USS Ronin – StarBase 118 Star Trek PBEM RPG
((Fuzzy Caretaker’s Node, The Reef))
With the threat of Alliance litigation in one hand and the gnawing suspicion that this was all some ruse to get at Niac in the other, Karrod found himself thinking tactically, the way he would if the ship were headed into combat.
Niac: Well first I think we need to stall any way we can as soon as we get back to Federation space. Give us some time to figure out what the Alliance is truly after. It might also be valuable for you to review the report about Salix...and about how Sencha died.
Morrow: Understood. One thing that we’ll have going for us is discovery. They may get out logs etc, but we get there whether they like it or not. Keep in mind they’ve built this case, not just over you leaving a subordinate in command, who they think was unqualified. And breaking the Treaty of Armens isn’t a good look there either.
Karrod offered little more than an aggrieved grunt, not at all interested in the Alliance's opinion on his command decisions.
Niac: Brief Commander Raga as soon as possible but don't do it in a room with a lot of breakable furniture. I don't want to replace our conference room table this week. Oh and...there's an Ensign aboard who has an unusual gift for data analysis, he might see something we don't. Contact Mr. Vennick and bring him up to speed.
Morrow: I’ll just make sure that Commander Raga is in an empty cargo bay when I fill him in. ::he chuckled:: Mr. Vennick? I don’t think I’m familiar…
He tried to put a few words to the young officer he'd recently met and found himself somewhat lacking.
Niac: He came aboard for a temporary assignment but accidentally came into my office here and, in the course of having a minor emotional breakdown, demonstrated competence far beyond his years and rank would suggest. If there's something hiding in what the Alliance have tried to do I suspect he'll be able to find it.
Morrow: Ahh, gotcha. I haven’t been getting out of my office much lately. Though I do steal a corner in the Brew Continuum for a few hours, just to get out of said office. But the new office is better than the broom closet I started out with. ::he smiled almost wistfully:: Oh, and the Library now and again.
Karrod smiled and nodded.
Niac: Ships library is a favorite of mine as well...reminds me I should make some time to get over there. And you don't have to tell me about the value of getting out of your office every now and then...I've found the more pips they add to my collar, the harder it is to pull myself away from the damn thing.
Morrow: Just a reminder, they’re going to ask for your official logs and most likely subpoena your personal logs. ::he grimaced:: Honestly, I think they want to go fishing when it comes to your logs. They’re going to scream that you have it in for the Sheliak and the Alliance in particular (beat); at least that’s what I’d do.
That gave him pause as he thought about some of the more colorful adjectives he'd used in his personal log to describe the Alliance. And the Alliance's mother.
Niac: Hmm...maybe that creates an opportunity for us. If they want to push for official documentation of ongoing operations, I would think we're well within our rights to do the same. Operational logs from Alliance vessels and stations related to the Ronin, their sensor logs from the Siege of DS33. Actually...hmmm.
Karrod could hear a tongo wheel turning in his head as he considered a more...unconventional strategy.
Niac: What if we confront them directly and counter-sue? Claim all the research data used to create Sencha wave based technologies was stolen without the creators consent, something I can absolutely affirm under oath, and force them to disclose how they got it if they want this farce to continue.
Morrow: Response
Karrod chuckled and felt his smile sharpen. He'd managed to hurt the Alliance in every skirmish they'd had with them so far...suddenly he was feeling like this didn't need to be any different.
Niac: I don't like being caught on the back foot, Mr. Morrow. If the Alliance is foolish enough to bring this fight to us then I intend to answer their challenge...aggressively.
Morrow: Response
He nodded and gestured towards the paddwork on his shimmering desk.
Niac: Get as much done while we're stuck in here as you can, I want to be able to respond as soon as we get back in touch with Starfleet Command. Until then I leave the development of our defense strategy in your capable hands. Draw on any ships resources and personnel you require. The Alliance wants to use this litigation to hurt us somehow Mr. Morrow...I intend to break them with it instead. Is there anything else?
Morrow: Response
He grimaced as he looked back towards his desk.
Niac: Don't worry Mr. Morrow...the Alliance hasn't beaten us yet. By the time you're through I expect that streak to remain intact, understood? ::Nodding, he tossed the man a smile:: Good luck Mr. Morrow. Dismissed.
Morrow: Response
