Xira was fine, everything was fine, she definitely wasn't caving in inside.
Or at least, that's what she wanted everyone to think.
No, she definitely hadn't spent the entire day crying.
She was supposed to act like she was fine. It's not like she was getting prodded and everything…
(She was. She didn't like it.)
She needed to get on with things. She had to move on eventually. She had to move on now. The stars don't wait. She could not exist here forever. She had to move forward.
But she couldn't, could she?
She had lost her friends, the only starship crew she had ever known to serve with.
All she had known was gone.
Except for those other survivors. T'Alia, Georgia, Dominika and Naledi, from what she could remember.
Xira never got to say goodbye to Naledi, but she assumed they were immediately reassigned somewhere else. Where, well, she didn't know. Those were the only people she knew were alive.
Everyone else was dead.
There would be no funeral for them.
There were no bodies.
There was only goo and distress.
The deceased never got a goodbye. Not a proper one.
They died scared and alone.

Xira's hand grabbed onto a bunch of her hair and pulled it roughly.
The tears broke the barrier she was trying so hard to keep up.

The sobs of the 23-year-old echoed through the room, her right hand shifting its grip from her hair to her other wrist.
Akani: No… please… They can't be gone…
The sobs got louder.
Xira felt lost in the waves of grief that were crashing over her, higher and higher.
She felt like she was going to drown in them.

Akani: WHY DIDN'T YOU TAKE ME?
Xira felt herself collapse to the ground, body still shaking with sobs.
She didn't know if anyone would find her.
She didn't care if anyone did.
She didn't care if she made it through the night.
