((Deck 14, Main Engineering, The Pool Table, USS Ronin))
Wren: I can only prepare so much without more information. I can take a look at the engines to see if they’re prepared for….. Lassoing?
Tucker: ::trying to hide a chuckle:: Yes Ensign, I feel we’re going to be putting a strain on things, including the warp core. Lassoing is a last ditch option, at least for me it is. That’s why I want those diagnostics on the deflector dish and tractor beam as soon as possible.
Cabrillo: The real issue here is more of what is causing the interference with the scans. If there is some form of natural biological energy at play here that we do not understand then that same physiology could very well make the tractor beam impossible to use. We need to cut through that interference first.
Morgan: ::looking at Delphina:: I’ll help you with the warp core and such. I’m not sure how much strain we can put on the old gal before she starts flying apart at the seams.
Delphina nodded, adding it to the list with a frown. The Ronin wasn't falling apart by any means, but she wasn't exactly a debutant at this point. Although, accidentally ripping themselves in half chasing a space whale was a hell of a way to go out. oO I think we would go down in history as the first to do so at the very least. I kind of envy the newer ships that can just pop their lids off at the first sign of trouble. Oo
Chip: That would be bad, very bad.
Cabrillo: I would not worry about this warp core. These Akira class ships were built with a different mission thought process. The core will strain but she'll hold. ::beat:: Back to this scanning problem though. What is this package that was mentioned?
Morgan: So right now we’re sitting on our deep space package for astrometrics, which needs to be installed, though he should probably talk to the geeks and Commander Kel and see where their minds are when it comes to this ::waving a hand at the picture::
oO Are…. We not the geeks? Oo
Tucker: Correct. So we should probably get that done ASAP, Chip I want you to take a couple techs and go and install that package. Also make sure you’re running the diagnostics I asked for. So why don’t you go and get started on those tasks and report back to me at regular intervals? I want to know the second that thing is brought online.
Chip: ::nodding:: Aye, sir.
Miller turned on a heel and headed towards a work station to start the diagnostics while he went and helped get the deep space survey sensor package online and he could monitor the diagnostics from any work station.
Cabrillo: Response
Tucker: Morgan and Wren, let's work on making sure the engines could handle the strain of something as large as this thing is. TK and I will work on a plan to move the thing, if needed. Which if I’m being honest, is like the last thing we need to attempt.
Wren: Aye, sir. ::moving some numbers around on her PADD:: oO I mean if they're not that attached to magenta and fuchsia I can probably get the scanners done sooner… that's still pushing it though. Oo ::tapping her bun gently to wake Remy back up::
Morgan: ::turning to Wren:: Do you need to work on the schematics? I know Chief didn’t give you a lot of time, but can you do it in half an hour? Because we’re sitting here flapping our jaws while the clock ticks down.
Wren: I can do my best. I'm cutting out most of the power required for color composition save for the basic primaries, but I have a few ideas to push the scanners further.
Right now, cutting all non-essential scanning abilities was what she'd have to do. She didn't have an extra generator to hook up to their scanner systems to give it more power input, nor did she want to take power from the engines or shields, which left her with little to work with. At this moment, she was reminded of a quote from the human artist Michelangelo. ‘I saw the angel in the marble, and I cut until I set him free.’. Well, she was going to have to cut until they had a scanner that, if nothing else, could scan an enormous space whale.
Tucker: Now, of course, this could all change, and we may be assigned to other areas, especially if they decide we need away teams.
Cabrillo: Understood Chief.
Which left the engines as a secondary problem, one that was a little harder for Delphina to suss out. They needed to reroute the power from somewhere, but there just weren't a lot of places they could do that with. Part of her wanted to suggest weapons. Hopefully there wouldn't be a need to fire on this creature at all, and they could just scan it and go merrily on their way. But she also knew that was unrealistic. They were too close to danger to completely lower their guard, which meant they couldn't sacrifice their weapons for anything. oO not to mention, even if I did find a way to calibrate the shields properly there's the question of getting torn in two. There's a reason a ship can't reasonably try and tow a planet through space, and it's because it would immediately rip in half the second it tried to go to warp. Oo
Wren: ::to herself and Remy:: what we need is an extra layer of protection around the ship… but the shields won't provide it, because the deflectors project too far in front of the ship to hold it together….
Cabrillo: Chief, I have an idea but it's going to sound really wild.
Well, Delphina was never one to question a wild idea. She turned most of her attention to Cabrillo while she continued tapping at her PADD, cutting things away from the simulated scanners in swaths. Honestly the simulation was starting to push back, as though it truly couldn't comprehend why she was trying to make it into a scanner that could only feasibly scan an enormous space whale. She smacked the PADD a few times, before hitting ‘yes I'm sure’, and returning her attention back to the others.
Tucker/Morgan/Miller: response
Cabrillo: To help move this thing, if we need to move it at all, we need to reduce it's mass. Simplest way to do this is by using the deflector dish which is why I assume you are having Mister Miller work on that. However the more probable and less riskier solution is to reduce the creatures mass without that strain on the Ronin. To do that, what if we use the fighter wing aboard? Assuming we can get close enough, each fighter parks at these relative points ::gesturing to the display:: then they interlock their warp fields to create a large singular warp bubble around the creature. Mass is reduced and we can push or pull the creature if needed without to much engine strain.
Wren: ::not fully incredulous, but definitely concerned:: wouldn't that be extremely difficult, especially if we're going so quickly?
Tucker/Morgan/Miller: response
Cabrillo: No this would not be easy and therefore we would need the skill of the pilots to work in unison for such a tight formation with the creature but it puts less risk on the Ronin.
Tucker/Morgan/Miller: response
Wren: ::turning to Morgan:: Actually, that gives me an idea. I've been working on a set of high-quality scanning pods that work in a similar way to this. What if we used this schematic to attach probes to each of the shuttles, and give each one a highly specific area of data to cover? One can cover life signs, one can cover coloration, and one can cover interior life, for example. Then they can send the individual data back to the Ronin’s computers where it can re-assemble the collected data into a composite? Clearly this thing is too big for the scanners to comprehend altogether, but if multiple probes use their entire processing power on just one aspect of it, we could get a clearer picture.
Cabrillo/Tucker/Morgan/Miller: response
Wren: in that case we don't need to be as precise with the cuts. I'll whip up instructions for between five and seven probes, that should only take about twenty-five minutes.
Cabrillo/Tucker/Morgan/Miller: response
Delphina nodded, swapping her PADD over to a different tab with a frown. That left the problem of the engines and, by extension, not tearing the ship in half. She really did not want to rip the ship in half.
Wren: ::completely at a loss:: How do we keep the ship from tearing in half?
Cabrillo/Tucker/Morgan/Miller: response
Delphina thought about that as she made her way to the engine systems with Morgan. She could feel Remy fidgeting around in her hair as she walked, trying to get a good view of what was happening, and she suddenly remembered what she'd read about Morgan and Cabrillo’s personnel files. About the spider-bots.
Wren: ::with all the delicacy of a sledgehammer:: hey, just so you know I have a robotic bug in my hair. I made him, his name's Remy, please don't shoot him.
Remy: ::briefly pokes his head out, before burrowing back in::
