((Counselling Suites, Deck 10, USS Ronin))

They waited until a seat was offered before taking it. The environment bore some resemblance to Dr. Saa’s office, though notable differences were also apparent. Taj’el found themselves recalling their father’s counsel, that the objects individuals choose to place within their personal space are often indicative of their character and priorities.

Taj'el: I had been advised by our ship’s counselor that it was prudent to engage in social interaction, and I determined that you would serve as an appropriate baseline. Forgive me… I remained relatively new to Starfleet and to interactions with other species.

Shortrith: Consider yourself forgiven, Lieutenant. Would you rather doctor?

Taj'el: Either is acceptable. Most use “Doctor”; however, I consider myself more proficient as a doctor than as a Starfleet officer.

Shortrith: Noted.

Taj'el: Thank you.

They observed the considerably taller Klingon smile and tilted their head slightly, attempting to interpret the expression. The gesture prompted uncertainty, whether the comment had been perceived as agreeable or humorous remained unclear. It was also possible the display was simply intended to put them at ease.

Shortrith: Where would you like to start?

Taj'el: I do not know. I believe most conversations begin with introductions, followed by basic inquiries such as one’s well-being, preferred colors, or interest in sweets. From that baseline of information, more advanced interaction can then proceed.

Shortrith: response

Taj’el tilted their head, reflecting on what they had stated. They believed their summary accurately described a standard conversational structure. While they acknowledged the existence of additional nuances, the fundamental progression remained largely as described. They continued to observe the individual for a moment longer.

Taj’el: Was that inaccurate?

Shortrith: response

This Klingon appeared more composed and notably kinder than the only Klingon Taj’el had encountered during their cadet years. They found this individual considerably more agreeable. It was possible that their roles as a doctor and counselor contributed to this demeanor; Saa, too, demonstrated insight and empathy consistent with her position, which may have influenced Taj’el’s perception. Alternatively, it could be attributed to differences in background or individual disposition.

Taj’el: I see… we could simply speak about ourselves. Alternatively, you may provide a breakdown of what is required for effective bedside manner.

In the event they were imposing, Taj’el offered an alternative to provide the other doctor an opportunity to disengage; however, they expressed a preference that the conversation continue. They had reviewed numerous references on bedside manner, many of which emphasized general directives such as smiling more or offering reassuring language. As a physician, Taj’el found that excessive ambiguity or lack of directness often led to increased confusion for patients, rather than alleviating it.
