((Xenobiology Lab, Sickbay Complex, Deck 10, USS Ronin))

Beck: Not entirely blind. We know how long it'll take to reach it. And we know they want us to get to it before the Lattice Alliance or Consortium. So… y'know, only mostly blind.

oO That's not particularly comforting. Oo

Renaie frowned, glancing out at the viewport.

As far as they were aware, the Ronin knew nothing of this being and were inbound for uncertain first contact in about three hours. oO Helpful. Oo

With no understanding of the creature… things could either go very well, or very badly. And they didn't want to give thought to which the odds were on.

Shortrith: Hold on- so the Ronin only has a blurry picture of the creature with no scale?

Beck: Yep. The image provided by our Intelligence officer, Lieutenant Alira Venn.

The Klingon paused.

Shortrith: What if a picture was taken of something at the same scale, specifically an entity that we know the scale of, and use it as a reference point there? That may give us an idea of how big this thing is, and maybe use it as a biological reference point.

Beck: I think that's a solid suggestion - the only caveat being, since we don't actually know the scale of the thing, it's difficult to make that reference. Still… probably worth mentioning to the others. Maybe it's passing close enough to a planet or nebula to give us an idea of the scale. Good idea.

A smile crossed their face as they gave an affirming nod.

Shortrith: Thank you, Doc.

Renaie noticed the Chief Medical Officer glance over at the door, before following him to a library console. They took a second to process the information that was on the screen, and look at the image.

Beck: This is what we've got to go on at the moment. It sort of vaguely resembles a whale, at least by my reckoning, but exponentially larger. Are you familiar with some of the other cosmozoan life that Starfleet has encountered before?

oO A big space whale, eh? Oo

Shortrith: Honestly? Not really. I've only read parts of reports, but I haven't had the time to read them all.

Beck: My first suggestion would be to become intimately familiar with the historical record, if only so we can rule any of those out. But we'll also want to touch base with Commander Kel - he's leading the research team alongside the specialist from Starfleet Command, and we'll be offering them our support.

Shortrith: Understood. Who's the specialist?

oO So it's not awkward in greeting. Oo

Beck: Velis. Serin Velis.

Without saying a word, Renaie nodded in understanding.

Beck: =/\= Beck to Kel. Just finished putting together my shortlist, and it's very short. Doctor Shortrith and I will be at your disposal. =/\=

Renaie suppressed a chuckle at the mention of three short-related words in ten seconds.

Kel: =/\= Excellent =/\=

Kel: =/\= What are you doing presently? =/\=

Beck: =/\= I intended to do some investigation and research here in the Xenobiology lab for the short term, but if you've got a better idea, I'm all ears. =/\=

Shortrith: =/\= Anything we can do help from here? =/\=

Kel: =/\= I'm trying to put recreate a process from the Thor. I used bioneural gel packs to process magnetic data from a cosmozoan and turn it into a holographic representation. What do you think Dr. Beck? Can we do that here? =/\=

Beck: =/\= Sexy, I like it. I'll have to see how many we need to process the data from our UFO, but assuming it works, it would be a helluva lot better than trying to unblur that picture as we approach. ::voice soft:: I wonder if there's any chance there's magnetic data already present in the readings they gave us. =/\=

Shortrith: =/\= I'm not entirely sure. Has anything come through since the initial photo? =/\=

Kel: =/\= I'll send you my notes from the Thor. Maybe in addition to magnetic fluctuation we can do EM emissions, color fluctuations and any other parameters that could be communications. =/\=

Renaie let out a sigh of relief, smiling at the triumphant look from the Human.

Quentin nodded, shooting the Klingon a look of triumph as he smacked the back of his fist against his palm.

Beck: =/\= I can work with that. ::to Renaie:: Think you can make any sense of what it's trying to say if this works? =/\=

Shortrith: =/\= Possibly? It depends on what the entity does next. =/\=

Kel: =/\= See what you can do. Kel out. =/\=

Beck: =/\= Will do. Thanks, Commander. Beck out. =/\=

As the comm channel closed, Renaie was running millions of calculations through their mind at once, not noticing the Doctor's grin, but noticing his motion to the computer.

Beck: Do me a favor, run a query on how many bioneural gel packs we have in storage. And, hell, might as well see how many are actually in use right now throughout the ship.

The klingon nodded, and made a beeline to the interface.

Shortrith: By the looks of it, we're currently using about one hundred and twenty gel packs, with around five hundred in storage.

Renaie shuffled over a bit so that Beck saw their search, as well as the results.

Beck: Considering the potential size of this thing, I'm concerned we might not have enough processing power with just the gel packs that we've got for backup. I'm wondering if we would need to patch it through the computer system and use the active ones, too.

Shortrith: I… I like the concept, but I do have concerns about the danger.

Beck: Hoh, yeah, potentially very dangerous. If our calculations are off by even a fraction, we could burn out the entire computer system trying to generate a holoprojection of this thing. Could leave us dead in the water. Kind of exciting, actually.

oO … How is it exciting? Oo

Renaie stayed silent, simply giving him a plain look of confusion.

Beck: I've got holoprojectors built into this table to help me work at scale; I'm going to need to modify it to use V'Len's idea. If it does cause a burnout, I'd rather it happen to an easily replaceable table than one of the holodecks.

Shortrith: As in scaling it down so we can look at it?

Beck: Response

They nodded. He was right, but there were other aspects of the hologram that… it wasn't that they didn't understand what he was referencing, it was mainly that there was something that wasn't sitting right with them.

Shortrith: I'm sorry, but I still have concerns about energy consumption and overload, especially on a deck like deck ten.

Beck: Response

Shortrith: Is there any way we can do it without risking overload?

Beck: Response
