((Fuzzy Caretaker’s Node, The Reef))

They'd turned a corner and begun descending a gently sloped tunnel in what Karrod hoped was the right direction.  At the moment it felt good simply to move as the walls pulsed with light, guiding him on.

Cerisor: As I'm sure you're aware of, Captain, all personnel that were trapped in the lower portion of the Ronin are safe and well. I will return to sickbay after this and attend to those still injured, but there is nothing more than a few bumps and scrapes, and maybe a fracture or two. I have yet to assess any other crewmembers who may have been injured, but they are under the care of Doctor de la Croix.

Karrod smirked and muttered under his breath.

Niac: My sympathies to them...

He cleared his throat and looked towards the man as they continued on a long, spiral descent.

Niac:  But I'm glad to hear that.  I'm sure Doctor Shortrith will keep our visiting surgeon from violating her Hippocratic oath too badly.  That said, I hope none of them need surgery.  Her acerbic charm is the only thing sharper than a laser scapel on this ship.

Cerisor: No immediate need for surgery as far as I can tell, but I can send a report once I've reassessed everyone.

He chuckled again as they came to a landing and the walls pulsed ahead, drawing him towards a large arched entryway.  Some trick of the light or bioengineered process he didn't understand gave the whole thing a faint but steady shimmer of soft, rippling colors in blues and pinks and purples.  He felt himself smiling as he paused to take it in.

Niac: There are times, Ensign, where it can be easy to forget just how incredible a life in Starfleet can be.  It's not all paddwork.  There are difficult days to be sure but...the good ones sure are worth it.

Cerisor: ::Grinning:: All things considered, I've already seen more amazing things than if I stayed to be a doctor on Bajor. I don't regret it for a second.

They stepped through the archway and Karrod's smile redoubled.

((Observation Deck, The Reef))

Although he'd seen the thriving environment outside the Reef several times already there was something awe inspiring about seeing it this way, on a grand platform extending away from the body of the Reef and wrapping them on all sides in vast translucent walls.  It felt like walking in open space but without the clumsy confinement of an EVA suit.  Within him Niac radiated delight, soaking in every detail it could.

Cerisor: I have to say, Captain. The science team must be having a hell of a day with this place.

The voice of their new medical officer drew his attention back and he blinked for a moment to refocus.

Niac: I think they're already looking for apartments.  At this rate getting back to Federation space will be the easy part...dislodging them from this...astonishing place will be a lot more challenging.  Can't say I blame them.

Cerisor: Response

Karrod looked over to the young man and smiled, just the smallest bit envious.

Niac:  But that's the life for us, Mr. Cerisor.  Trust your ship, trust your crewmates...they're the ones that'll keep you going.  We never quite know where the journey will take us...but I think I prefer it that way.

Cerisor: Response

Smiling as a great pod of the Cosmozoans drifted by lazily, Karrod leaned against the viewing wall and simply enjoyed himself, pips and paddwork and assorted stresses all momentarily forgotten.  After a long moment he spoke without looking away.

Niac:  Welcome to the Ronin, Ensign.  I suspect you'll find your time on the Ronin...memorable.

Cerisor: Response

He smiled as the two of them settled into a comfortable silence and a quiet few moments of shared wonder at the vast beauty surrounding them.
