((Bridge, Deck 3, USS Ronin))
With mental image of Raga and Niac surrounded by flames and the remnants of the Kurosawa being pulled into the shuttlebay it was no surprise that V'Len was not in the best of moods. He was questioning his ability to lead the crew through this strange crisis and his ability to explain the situation once it was resolved. Fortunately Niac had given him a piece of advice before he left. "Take care of the ship and the ship will take care of you." Thus V'Len had gotten the crew working on the problem. There was team collecting debris for analysis, hopefully they'd come across the Kurosawa's "black box" soon. Another team was busy analyzing the data packet that had been sent by Niac before the destruction of the Kurosawa. Finally, there was his team on the bridge. Their job would be to figure out what secrets the Ross-580 system held.
Coming back onto the bridge, V'Len was relieved to see Jack had arrived. The pair had served together on the Thor, the Oumuamua and the Ronin. It would be nice to have a friend at hand.
Kel: Jack, are we alone in this system?
Kessler: Aye skipper, your sky is clear as far I can see, but we are on limited range being that we are on short range sensors.
V'Len nodded.
Kel: Ok. Mr. O'Connor, Mr. Kessler keep scanning. We need to know every particle floating around out there. Anything that could give us a clue as to what's going on. ::Turning:: Ensign Wren see what you can do to boost our sensor strengh.
Kessler: Aye sir.
Wren: ::quietly:: Aye sir.
O'Connor: Working it from multiple angles now.
Kel: You can pull power from the auxiliary systems if you need to but don't take down any major systems without checking first.
Wren: I’m releasing sensor probes. In about three minutes I’ll be able to give you a report on anything out of the ordinary.
Kessler: ::eyes fixed on his console:: I'm bringing the tactical sensor array and optical systems online as a backup.
O'Connor: Good idea, there’s no one else around that we know of so far but who knows, the tactical sweeps may catch something we might otherwise miss.
V'Len turned to Dr. Shortith who was at one of the auxiliary stations. He walked up next to her and pulled up a frozen from of Niac and Raga in the Kurosawa. The sight of the badly injured officers made V'Len wince. He pointed.
Kel: Shortrith, look here on Karrod's neck and Toryn's shoulder. There's some kind of injury, but it seems partially healed. Are those burns? Dermal irritation of some kind?
Shortrith: It looks like third-degree burns, from the depth of the injury. My main confusion point is how the wounds healed so quickly. Maybe the chronitons that were initially found have something to do with it.
It was an interesting theory which now was impossible to prove or disprove.
Kel: We need information in order to formulate a plan so I'm willing to look at any minute details for a hint as to what to do.
Wren: ::Clearing her throat, uncomfortable at having interrupted him:: Sir? The probes are almost finished scanning the area. There are Chronitons, like we thought, but they seem to be moving in a sort of orbit around the area where the detonation occurred. None of them have been beamed aboard with the rest of the wreckage.
Kessler: ::puzzled:: Those chronitons are showing some form of echo or displacement wave unlike anything I have seen or the Ronin's computer has seen.
O'Connor: Scientifically speaking… ::he raised one eyebrow and deadpanned:: Fascinating.
V'Len cocked his head to one side. All this would be very interesting if the situation were drastically different.
Shortrith: One new thing after another.
Kel: We have one goal. Get Niac and Raga back and potentially save the Federation.
O'Connor: ::mouthing toward Kel:: technically that’s 2 goals. ::then outloud:: Potentially saving the Federation is what we do skipper. We’ll figure this out… although it’ll be Ronin style.
V'Len felt his antennae sag, but was grateful that Ian could still be glib.
Wren: ::tapping at her screen::..... buddy , what are you doing? Um…. One of the probes doesn’t seem to be responding to the recall. I’ve tried the standard code, but it’s not responding.
V'Len glanced over at the Ensign at Engineering.
Kessler: :: glancing over to Wren:: Try sending an Emergency Recall with the security code Alpha-Sierra - 0 - 1 - Alpha.
O'Connor: Jack, maybe get a tractor beam ready?
Kel: I hate to take away from our recovery efforts, but if it's necessary we can use one.
V'Len would have been happy to take action, but the Ensign threw out another strange twist.
Wren: Sir, the probe appears to have vanished. I’m no longer getting a reading on it, and the ship can’t pick it up either. We have the completed scan from the two that were recovered, but that third one is completely gone.
Kessler: Confirmed, the probe has vanished from sensors and optical view.
That was odd. The debris field didn't seem to be disappearing, so he had to wonder what made the probe different. The whole fact that the chronitons were not dispersing as they might normally was also odd. It suggested that something in that region was holding them in place, but what force could hold chronitons together?
Shortrith: There's no way that the probe could have gone through the temporal anomaly, is there?
Kel: I would have thought it was closed, but I suppose it's not out of the question.
Wren: Sir, do you mind if I go to engineering to check on the probes that did come back? If something happened to the third one, it might be happening to the other two.
V'Len was torn. On the one hand it was useful to have the Engineer available, however, the mystery of what happened with the probes was compelling.
Kel: Go ahead ensign. Contact Lt. Cabrillo or Lt. Dohna to assist you. Ensigns k'Oar-€l or Poagie could also assist you.
Wren: Aye, sir.
The young ensign turned and headed off the bridge. V'Len was tempted to tell Rox or Wyla to meet her in case whatever exotic particles were present were hazardous. Jack however drew his attention.
Kessler: ::looking back to Kel:: Commander, until we know more about this phenomenon I recommend we maintain a safer distance.
O'Connor: Catch 22, boss. Sensors may not be as sharp if we pull back. I agree it probably would be safer from chroniton exposure back off but then again, who knows.
V'Len's antennae shifted uncomfortably. They needed information, but V'Len, always risk averse, was not sure he should put the full crew in harm's way. V'Len moved to one of the science consoles. He was learning slowly, but he knew the main deflector had a variety of uses.
Shortrith: Who knows what will happen if we get too close.
Kel: I could make some adjustments to our deflector to push away all subatomic particles. That would include chronitons. Jack can you adjust our sensors so we'll know right away if something goes wrong?
Kessler: ::turning back to his console:: I think I can adjust for that. Give me one moment.
O'Connor: I’ve got a nice drop back position set If the mods work we…in theory anyway… be safe enough from any timey-wimey shenanigans…maybe.
They had a plan and a contingency which was pretty good. Still there were risks.
Shortrith: So we'd be able to observe without any risk to either our wellbeing or our safety.
V'Len considered his acting Chief Medical Officer. They were about the same age he was when he was acting CMO on the USS Thor. He could only hope their experience was better than his.
Kel: ::smiling at Shortrith:: That's the idea.
Kessler: Adjustments made sir.
O'Connor: Nice, I don’t think we’ll have any resolution drop off when pulling back now. Orders, Cap?
V'Len looked at the space before them and wandered around to the command chair.
Kel: Lex n’thas hlashren. ::beat:: The ice won't get any thinner. O.k. Mr. O'Connor, roll out. Everyone keep an eye on things. Lt. Shortrith please keep an eye on the radiation levels. Let us know if we're in any danger.
Kessler: Response
Shortrith: Yes, Sir.
O’Connor: Aye, sir.
The Ronin crept forward and from the console on his chair, V'Len watched the various readings come in. The area was awash with chronitons, but as they'd already noted, something was holding them together. The nature of that force was not readily apparent.
Kel: I'm not reading any unique particles outside of chronitons and the standard planetary system mix of subatomic particles. Whatever's keeping these in place must be a purely energetic feature.
Kessler: Response
Shortrith had returned to observing the earlier transmission from the Kurosawa and now spoke up.
Shortrith: Commander, I'm noticing some discrepancies in the finer details of the injuries, compared to my initial analysis.
Kel: V'Len turned his attention toward them. Do tell.
Kessler/O'Connor: Response
Shortrith: So, you know how it looked like a plasma conduit had exploded on Commander Raga's face?
Kel: ::flinching:: Yes.
Kessler/O'Connor: Response
Shortrith: I'll be blunt, it seems to have left a deeper injury than a third-degree burn, which isn't surprising, but it's concerning.
The blow out of a plasma conduit was a devastating injury, but it was predictable. Proximity, angle and degree of blow out all factored into the overall injury level. Given what he'd seen V'Len would have expected significant burns, but ones they could have treated had the Kurosawa held together.
Kel: You think they had more in their conduits than standard plasma?
Kessler/O'Connor: Response
V'Len turned back to the readings on his chair and rubbed his chin.
Kel: If they truly traveled through time, perhaps they flooded the Kurosawa's system with chronitons.
Shortith/Kessler/O'Connor: Response
V'Len sat back, but and stared at the data rolling by. He was not sure how long he'd been looking but he soon found his antennae were burning.
Kel: ::grabbing his antennae:: Ugh. Does anyone else feel that.
Shortith/Kessler/O'Connor: Response
Kel: Something must be getting through to the shop. All stop, full forward shields.
Shortith/Kessler/O'Connor: Response
V'Len tried to give Renaie a reassuring look.
Kel: That's why you're here doctor, to pull me out if I lose my mind.
Shortith/Kessler/O'Connor: Response
