((Shuttlecraft USS Anna Pavlova))
Zh'taan: Is it possible that we might also encounter enemies down there…?
Shortrith: Quite possible, I believe.
Renaie exhaled as Esot seemed to smile.
oO Why is she smiling at a time like this? Oo
Esot: I believe sensors have also picked up an incoming vessel.
Shortrith: ::slightly sarcastic:: Lovely.
Esot: =/\= Anna Pavlova to Bridge. We are looking for clearance to launch. =/\=
Nicolau: =/\= Standby Pavlova, we have an unknown and potentially hostile vessel holding position relative to us. Suggest you...uh...launch aft. Keep the ship between you and the vessel as long as possible. Bridge out. =/\=
Zh'taan: Shuttle ready for departure. I’ve entered the moon’s coordinates into the computer.
Shortrith: Be careful around the vessel.
Esot: Agreed. We will do the away team little good should we perish en route.
Once clearance was granted by the bridge, the shuttle lifted off toward Moon Sigma. The journey lasted several dozen minutes. Renaie tensed, constantly glancing at the ensigns to make sure they were okay.
Renaie was the most senior officer on the shuttle, and the Acting Chief Medical Officer.
Safe to say, they were very protective of their crew.
Zh'taan: Ensign Esot, uh… what do you know about this Sencha radiation emitted by the reactor?
Esot: It can be dangerous in high enough doses and was recently weaponized by the Lattice Alliance with their attempt to destroy Deep Space 33 in 2401. As Doctor Shortrith mentioned earlier, the reactor here is providing a link to an alternate universe's Ross-580 system, from which it is drawing the majority of its power. This link is… unstable. While EV suits would be recommended for long-term exposure, we should not be on the surface long enough to necessitate their use.
Renaie was silent as they watched the moon and the landing spot come into view.
The path seemed clear. Renaie wasn't sure whether it was the Klingon or the Starfleet Officer in them, but it seemed too clear.
Their grip tightened on the extra medkit.
Zh'taan: ::He exits the shuttle first, tricorder in hand:: I’m not detecting any life signs in the immediate vicinity.
Shortrith: ::explaining:: The radiation can cause interference with our tricorders. Maybe switch them on to the highest setting, they should come up with something.
Zh'taan: Indeed… ::Makes the adjustments::
Esot: Configuration updated - while there are still no life signs nearby, I am detecting the landing party further ahead. They appear to be approaching the reactor, as requested.
Zh'taan:
Renaie glanced around the group, looking for the distinct yellowy-green blast of the radiation coming from the Lid. Theoretically, it should have been easy to spot, but… it wasn't?
Something was even more wrong than before.
Shortrith: Can either of you see the blast?
Esot: It is possible the stream has shifted outside of the normal visual spectrum. I can say, however, that it is still erupting from the building - Cardassian visual acuity extends deeper into ultraviolet territory, and it is quite bright to me.
Zh'taan: I think I can see it too. We need to hurry and reach them, then return to the Ronin…
Shortrith: =/\= Shortrith to Tucker: We've been sent down to rejoin you guys, where are you?
There was a momentary pause as they waited for a response, but it came fairly quickly.
Tucker: =/\= We’re on the way to the reactor, got sidetracked and took the scenic route. Also, I would keep in mind that there are Tholians wandering about, worker class, but still dangerous. =/\=
Evinrude: =/\= Response =/\=
Shortrith: =/\= We'll try to find you. =/\=
Esot: I suggest we keep the comm line open but our end muted for the time being - if they are already under fire, we should not draw more with our voices.
Zh'taan: ::Activates his comm line:: Understood.
Renaie nodded and muted the line.
Shortrith: Done.
They followed Esot to a hatch outside the dome, quietly applauding when she got it open with a stray spanner.
Esot: This should allow us entry.
Zh'taan: I’m still not detecting any life signs other than Tucker’s team. We can proceed.
Renaie followed the others in, their tricorder on the highest viable setting. The dome was significantly more abandoned than they gave it credit for.
Esot: They are approximately 500 meters ahead of us.
The comm crackled and they heard part of the conversation on the other end.
Kessler: =/\= Tess, keep going, we need to get to the reactor. ::turning to Tucker:: We need the Tholians to think we are going to affect their work. That should draw them to us and not to Shortrith's team. =/\=
Tucker: =/\= Sure, why not? I love being bait. ::he rolled his eyes:: =/\=
Evinrude: Response
Zh'taan: =/\= Response, assuming comms are left open =/\=
Renaie stayed silent, taking inventory of the situation.
Kessler: =/\= ::rubbing his head through the back of his helmet and looking around:: I know it's not ideal, but I am guessing Shortrith and team have never dealt with Tholians face to face like you and I have.=/\=
Tucker: =/\= Exactly, most of us who faced off with them last time are back aboard the ship. Which doesn’t do us a damn bit of good. Lieutenant Shortrith, be advised the AO is hot, I repeat the AO is hot. And you can park next to the Sojourn. =/\=
Shortrith: =/\= What's the AO? =/\=
Evinrude: response
Esot: =/\= I have only seen one up close, as he had been transferred to Division 14 holding. He was… quite large. =/\=
oO Oh wow. Oo
Kessler: =/\= Shortrith, this is Kessler. Be warned, if you encounter Tholians, they are carrying spears with explosive tips. Designed to go off on impact. =/\=
Tucker: =/\= Lieutenant Shortrith, try to track our comm badges for as long as you can, as interference will only get worse the closer you get. But you’ll get a good idea of where to find us. See you soon, kids. Tucker out. =/\=
Shortrith: =/\= Noted, you two. We'll be careful. Shortrith out. =/\=
Evinrude: response
Esot sighed, and Renaie silently agreed.
Esot: Let us endeavour not to encounter them.
Zh'taan: Affirmative… I am still not detecting any Tholian life signs in the vicinity.
Shortrith: Keep an eye out.
The comms muted on the other end, and Renaie continued scanning.
Esot: I believe I can pick up the Tholian lifesigns now - they are rather spotty. The radiation is still affecting my tricorder.
Zh'taan: I… I’m detecting them as well. ::Attempts further adjustments:: They appear to be heading toward Commander Tucker’s team…
Shortrith: I'm seeing that too.
Renaie exhaled and gestured to a different direction which appeared to be safer.
Shortrith: What about this way?
Esot: Although it will take us longer to connect with Commander Tucker's team, this way should provide us better cover and decreased chances of encountering one of the Tholians. ::a beat:: There is a much higher concentration of Sencha-wave radiation, however.
Zh'taan: Understood…
Shortrith: It'll probably be best to go that way. But keep your guard up and prepare for the worst.
Renaie followed Esot's path, tense.
Zh'taan: ::studying his tricorder readings:: We are getting closer to the radiation source.
Shortrith: This whole dome is a radiation source.
Esot: Response
Renaie felt a slight tingle, most likely from the radiation, but they had no choice but to move forward.
Zh'taan: Still… no Tholian life signs, but we are fully entering the most heavily irradiated zone. An EV suit would not have been unwelcome… ::He lifts his head from the tricorder:: How are you holding up?
oO You just mentioned you saw the life signs?? Oo
Shortrith: Hold on - you said you could see tholians on the scans but you can't anymore?
Esot: Response
The group moved forward, stopping when the newest science officer stopped.
Zh'taan: I’m detecting Tholian life signs on all sides — are you picking that up too?!
Esot: Response
Shortrith: Ensign Esot said that she had seen the Tholians on the scans… I'm confused. Did they disappear from the tricorder even though we didn't move?
Zh'taan/Esot: Response
Shortrith: Okay, now that we're on the same page - let's be cautious and meet up with the others.
Zh'taan/Esot: Response
Renaie continued walking and then paused, picking up something with their tricorder.
Shortrith: What's this - are you guys picking this up?
Zh'taan/Esot: Response
