Niac:  I understand Nurse Queen and Dr. De La Croix have already debased themselves quite comprehensively this leave, probably for the best that we don't reinforce the idea.  For the good of the ship, of course.

Morrow:  ::raising his glass:: For the good of the ship!

Karrod felt the warmth of good company mixing with the warmth of the potent spirit in an entirely agreeable way and sighed contentedly as he leaned back, the cargo bay seeming a bit more cozy.

Niac:  On that subject, how have you been finding your time aboard the Ronin?  I know this posting wasn't exactly your idea and I've read enough personnel files to know when someone has fun afoul of the higher ups.  If you don't mind me asking, what happened?  Run the table on a few Admirals at their weekly dom jot game?

He saw a small change in the mans expression that spoke of a much larger story and listened intently.

Morrow:  I wish it were that easy. I ran afoul of an admiral that shall remain nameless. It’s sorta classified, though you might have clearance for it. Anyways, his kid comes up to Captain's Mass and has violated several rules of the code. He was a commander and ‘was’ doing a lot of heavy lifting. He was brought up on insubordination and public drunkenness. He was at the 602 club, had a few too many black holes, and tried to pick up anything in a skirt. Well, one waitress was the Captain’s daughter.

Karrod huffed derisively, beginning to put the pieces together as he shook his head.

Niac: Let me guess...you just happened to be in the rotation for the JAG office that day?

Morrow: Right, and so I was chosen to prosecute. The tribunal and I threw the book at him, insubordination, unbecoming, etc., etc. Busted him down to Lieutenant JG, took his security clearance, he was, and I stress was with Starfleet Security. Apparently, he’d been doing this a lot, and he finally messed with the wrong woman and paid the price. Suffice it to say, his Dad, the Admiral, made sure that I was relegated to bases only. And then he got a burr up his rear end and stationed me here.

Karrod raised his glass in mock salute, all too familiar with the problem.

Niac: Another fine demonstration of the difference between a superior officer and a merely higher ranking one.  But I thank him all the same...you may not have planned to be here but you've found a place aboard this ship...and the next time you have to go a few rounds with the Admiralty, you'll have me in your corner.  Nothing I enjoy more than taking some jumped up paddpusher down a few pegs.  Keeps my beard healthy.

The man offered a resigned smile, finished his drink and set his cup aside.

Morrow: I hate to cut this convo short, sir, but padd work awaits. I have a couple of briefs I’m working on, HQ wants to know how I finagled the FCA into pulling our cans out of the fire.

Karrod followed suit, already feeling the first pleasant effects of the Tears as he briefly considered having himself beamed directly to his quarters.

Niac: Fair enough...copy me on that report, in my experience anybody who can weaponize the Ferengi is useful to have around.  Ask me about tongo some time, I'll tell you some stories you might even believe.

Morrow: Aye, sir, will do.

The ships legal officer packed away his gear and the empty cups before departing and, with a small sigh, Karrod did the same with the remains of the bottle, unwilling to suffer the hangover another drink or two would certainly bring on.  As he gathered himself up and left the slightly askew cargo bay he thought about the unfortunate path Mr. Morrow had walked to end up aboard the ship and how quietly grateful he was that fate had dropped another fine officer into their midst.

[End for Niac!]
