((Lumina Coves Ecological Retreat, Lolagi IV))
What had begun as a simple attempt to try something new had developed into a notably comforting session. The Klingon proved quite different from Taj’el’s initial expectations, which they found pleasantly surprising. Their calm and approachable demeanor facilitated interaction, making it significantly easier to engage and connect. Even Taj’el, who typically found forming connections challenging, experienced an unusual ease in bonding with them.
Taj’el: Doctor Saa, thinks it has something to do with the emotional state of other’s and me not being used to filtering them out.
Shortrith: I'm assuming it's because of your telepathic abilities as a Vulcan?
Taj’el: Well, yes. Vulcans are telepathic; however, I lack sufficient practice with species outside of Vulcans. I do not possess strong mental defenses against the emotions of others.
Shortrith: I understand.
There was a brief silence as they stood together. After a moment, the other Doctor looked down at them.
Shortrith: May I give you a hug?
Taj’el: A hug? For what purpose?
Shortrith: As another way to show support, and show you that this is a safe place through actions, not just words.
Taj’el took a moment to consider. They were not typically inclined toward physical contact, largely due to this newly developed complication since joining Starfleet. However, in this instance, it appeared acceptable, and there was no logical basis for refusal. They also found themselves curious about the concept of a “safe place” conveyed through the action.
Taj’el: Alright… yes. I believe I would find that acceptable.
Shortrith: response
They paused briefly, then moved closer to the taller Doctor. Closing their eyes, they leaned in with measured caution. They were uncertain whether to raise their own arms, but once they felt the other’s embrace, they allowed themselves to rest lightly against them.
Taj’el: Is this acceptable? Should I reciprocate the gesture?
Shortrith: response
Taj’el: Okay… I will.
Taking a moment to consider, they raised their arms and placed them gently at the other’s sides. Holding on lightly, they allowed themself to relax into the moment. It was… pleasant. Their eyes closed as they became aware of the steady rhythm of breathing, the movement of air around them, and the emerging sense of a “safe place.” It was a state in which one could lower their guard without immediate concern for potential outcomes.
Shortrith: response
