Shayne: =/\= In a manner of speaking. The Sheliak and the Tholians are wicked bastards, but they’re not the brightest. We can use that. =/\=

Niac: =/\= Sounds like you've got something in mind, Captain.  I'm all ears.  =/\=

Carpenter: =/\= We can assist as needed, Captain...s...But what's the play? =/\=

Tucker: =/\= I’ve got the Ronin running as good as she can under the circumstances, I’ve had crews running around the clock, we’ll be ready for sure. =/\=

Shayne: =/\= By, uh… ::he cleared his throat, regretting that he’d be saying this on an open channel.:: By firing at the station. =/\=

Whatever Karrod had expected his level headed former CO to say, that wasn't it.  He'd known Shayne to be a pragmatist in the time they served together and he both trusted and respected the mans instincts...but he couldn't entirely shake off the shock.

Dewitt: =/\= Fire on our own people? =/\=

Marty was with Dewitt on this one: Why on God's green earth would we fire on our own people?

Niac: =/\= I'm listening, Captain..but be advised I've been in the doghouse with the stations commander for nearly a year because I lightly exploded one small airlock. She finds out about this we'll both be repainting the stations hull in EVA suits. If we're lucky. =/\=

Carpenter: =/\= To...to what end, sir? =/\=

Ronin Bridge: =/\= RESPONSE =/\=

Shayne: =/\= They distracted us to capture the station, which means they’re grinding down the forces over there. We come in swinging at the enemy, and it’s business as normal. But if we fire at a non-inhabited part of the station away from anything vital- a cargo bay or the like- they’ll think we’re trying to destroy a vital asset rather than let it fall to them. Guile isn’t their strong suit. They’ll divert boarding parties there to secure the “asset”, let our ground forces regroup, and if I’m right, they’ll be confused as all hell for a few minutes- long enough for Ronin to follow us in and help us take advantage of their hesitation. =/\=

Karrod let out a slow breath as Captain Shayne unpacked his desperate, brilliant assault plan.  The Khitomer could draw focus and critical moments for the Ronin to slash through the main body of the Lattice Alliance forces.  It was dangerous, it violated more regulations than Karrod cared to total up, and it relied entirely on the Alliance taking the bait...and it was the best idea Karrod had heard all day.

Dewitt: =/\= We buy time - both for our makeshift chroniton pulse and for the Ronin to follow. If we decrease phaser power to 50-60% we could simulate battle damage from the alliance trap and we’d have more shots and more time. =/\=

Shayne: =/\= We can catch them vulnerable if we fool them well enough. =/\=

Karrod tapped away at the controls embedded in the table and a holographic representation of the space around DS33 appeared above the table, a tactical simulation of Shayne's plan began moving at exaggerated speed.

Niac: =/\= It's high risk, high reward, I'll grant you that Captain...but it leaves the Khitomer in a vulnerable position.  If this works the way we plan the Ronin will end up on the far side of the opposition forces chasing after you.  =/\=

Carpenter: =/\=We're muckin' round with MORE exotic particles? Where's that gonna get us? =/\=

Beck: =/\= A damned headache, that's what. =/\=

Dewitt: =/\= We know from the Ronin’s reports that the interaction between chronitons and Sencha wave radiation create time fissures. If we can generate a chroniton pulse to interact with the Sencha radiation at its origin, we might be able to create quickly deteriorating micro-fissures that destabilize the weapon system and hopefully render it - or maybe the entire ship - inoperable. =/\=

Karrod could see Shayne's eyes widening even across the comm.  He was sure they mirrored his own.

Shayne: =/\= Thoughts? =/\=

Like blinding bolt from within Niac the impression of Sencha surged into his consciousness, fascinated by a possibility that she'd never once considered in her work.  A sharp thumb to the abdomen later and he'd regained the controls within his own mind but Karrod could still feel her glow of sudden, unexpected hope.

Niac: =/\= My first thought is you just made a part of Niac outright giddy...I think I hate it.  Regardless...Sencha thinks there's a chance...a good chance that your plan could work. =/\=

Karrod glanced towards the empty seat where Lt. Cmdr. Alieth should've been, sorely missing her acerbic scientific counsel.  He felt faintly reassured when he imagined her veiled but insightful criticisms and her sly, hidden smirk.

Carpenter:=/\=We'd need output harmonics first, right? In order to neutralize the wave proper, yeah? =/\=

Dewitt: =/\= Yes, we’d need to know the exact energy build-up signal of the weapon as well as it’s phase variance. =/\=

Shayne: =/\= How hard would it be to get that? =/\=

Karrod shook his head, his expression tightening.

Niac: =/\= About as easy as reading the serial number off a torpedo that's aimed at you.  We'd have a very narrow window to get the data and to program the deflector before they fired. =/\=

Carpenter: =/\= We've got plenty'a waveform scans from our previous engagements. But these would have to be real-time. We would have to take 'em during the fighting for them to be worth a cuss. =/\=

Dewitt: =/\= That might be a possibility, if Commander Alieth can provide these kinds of scans. ::looking at his PADD:: We might have 5-6 shots before this makeshift solution fries our deflector. That means 5-6 big ships… =/\=

Shayne: =/\= Enough to make them think we’re loaded for bear, and to get them to reconsider their attack. =/\=

Karrod nodded, allowing some of Shayne's enthusiasm to seep in.  He turned his attention towards Commander Carpenter who looked to be growing more excited by the plan as the moments ticked by.

Niac: =/\= Assuming a one au search radius relative to the station how long would it take to pull usable information? =/\=

Carpenter: =/\= I would say, ten, twelve minutes to glean a full and clean scan of the whole area. Prolly a little less if we sync up our sensor arrays. Granted, we will have to do what we can under fire. Even with our unexpected aimin', the L.A. won't just let us sit there. =/\=

Dewitt:::nodding:: =/\= Got it… We should prepare the Khitomer to fire on the station then and identify suitable targets… =/\=

Shayne: =/\= When we pick the target we’ll need a tightbeam message to the station so we don’t catch friendlies in the crossfire. =/\=

Karrod hoped there'd be anyone left to receive the message by the time they arrived.

Niac: =/\= As soon as we drop in we'll pick up your targeting data and launch our alpha strike.  Make sure to get well clear of any of those priority targets...we're expending sixty-five percent of our tri-colbolt ordinance in the first salvo. Commander Carpenter assures me the Lattice Alliance will find it...hard to ignore. =/\=

Carpenter: Sirs, yes, sirs. ::without one iota of irony::

Beck: =/\= Please let Doctor Ohnari know I'll be reaching out to her to discuss how badly things went over there with the Sencha radiation and what help I can offer, if any. And maybe we can collaborate on a way to memorialize the Ronin and Khitomer post-humously. =/\=

Shayne: =/\= Hey! =/\=

Karrod directed a scorching glare towards their acting CMO.

Niac: Gallows humor or not, Doctor Beck, that was out of line.  I don't want anyone giving up hope before the fight is even joined, least of all a senior officer.

Beck: =/\= Sorry, sirs.  =/\=

Karrod turned his attention back to the viewscreen and a visibly sour Captain Shayne.  He didn't blame the man but something about the Doctor's outburst rankled on a deeper level than simple annoyance.

Shayne: =/\= We’ll keep you apprised. Khitomer out. =/\=

Niac: =/\= When this is all over Captain I'll see you for a drink on Thirty Three.  I'll even pick up the tab.  Ronin out. =/\=

The channel closed and a brief quiet fell over the conference room as each officer considered the coming hours.  Doctor Beck's outburst was just a symptom of the stress and frustration all of them were feeling.  Karrod leaned forward and put his hands flat on the conference room table, looking to each officer in turn.  When he spoke his voice was low and quiet but certain.

Niac:  I know our situation is grave and the odds are long but I know this crew.  Every one of you is capable of excellence alone but when you work together...we can make miracles.  And I suspect we'll need a few of those before the day is over...but I believe it's within us to create our own luck.  Make sure your people know that...make sure they know we aren't beaten yet.  We are going to get back to Deep Space Thirty Three and we are going to help our friends.  Is that understood?

O'Connor/Beck/Carpenter/Tucker:  Response

He nodded once more and leaned back in his chair.

Niac:  Very well...thank you everyone.  We'll go back to red alert ten minutes before we drop out of warp, until then make whatever final preparations you deem necessary.  Dismissed.

O'Connor/Beck/Carpenter/Tucker:  Response

Karrod turned his attention back to Doctor Beck as everyone stood and made for the door.

Niac:  Doctor Beck, a moment please.

Karrod waited until the doors hissed shut as he considered the ships medical officer with an appraising eye.

Niac:  Are you alright, Doctor?  Gallows humor doesn't seem to suit you.

Beck: Response

He let out a slow breath and considered the mans face.  The rings under his eyes were darker than Karrod had realized at first.

Niac:  By all means Doctor, speak freely.  I'd like to know what's on your mind.

Beck: Response
