((Astrometrics Lab - Deck 10 - USS Ronin))

Luxa had spent much of her time in the unorthodox and oddly shaped lab that had slowly grown on her, like a lot of things in the Akira-class. They had adapted … to quote the old enemy of a time gone by … The Borg.

In front of her were the familiar Crewmen; Grayson and Fraslil. They had been joined with two newly assigned Ensigns to replace the lost Crewmen from the previous mission. A Saurian named Lyrik and a Human with a thick Scottish accent named Mhari McVey.

A pang of sadness threatened to erupt as the unavoidable reason for their presence, to replace the fallen, threatened to push itself to the centre of her mind.

oO no Oo

She locked it away. Down in the dark depths of her mind. A place where all the terrible things were trapped and she avoided dealing with them.

Ever since she had left Chief Alieth's office and they had returned to DS33 she had worked almost every hour.

Tetra had taken much of her time, having been distraught after the encounter with her progenitor. Not only that, the young Tholeconite had to explore her new webbing abilities and the potential for some kind of mild mood altering abilities due to her maleconite infused DNA.

It was remarkable, and she'd been putting off consulting Ensign Beck for a joint paper on their findings, which she'd hoped to eventually get published.

All of that for another day.

This one was reserved for the astronomers, old and new, of the team.

Lorana: Welcome Crewmen and Ensigns :: she nodded to the small group in front of her :: I trust you are well and have taken the last few days to rest :: to the new ensigns :: and to get familiar with the ship and the science department?

She looked at each of them, her tail swayed behind her head. She had opted for a classic Starfleet chignon hairstyle, her long illustrious silver locks had been swept up, rolled and then twisted to the back of her head into a neat and professional style.

Her usual skant variant uniform was now replaced with a shirt and pants combo, specially adapted for her felinoid anatomy.

It was a look, and a manner, that told them that she was a superior officer, scientist and professional.

They were not friends. She knew that it was because the pain was too enormous that her heart had to be closed in some way. It needed to be shut down just so that she could breath, and perform her duty. The alternative was that she'd be no use to anyone, the spiralling thread of grief that she knew she'd suppressed would consume her in ways she couldn't even fathom.

This was the only way that she could cope. Duty first.

Fraslil: Yes, ma’am. Uhm I did have a massage scheduled at 1600 hours at the station …

Luxa’s feline eyes focused in on the Bolian.

Lorana: You'll need to cancel that, Crewman.

The Bolian gave her a tense look, his eyes narrowed and lips thinned but he nodded, albeit a little bit more forcefully than Luxa cared for.

Lorana: Chief Alieth will be here in a moment or two, I have the task of briefing you on our project.

Each of them looked to each other and then to Luxa, who moved past them to the central console in the room that looked on to the horizontal astrometrics field, currently displaying the entirety of the Alpha Isles. Areas marked with glowing lines of orange, blue and various other colours to mark the boundaries of differing factions. The growing space of the Lattice Alliance did not go unnoticed to any of them.

She quickly moved her paw across the console and the map in front of them spun round and zoomed into a specific sector of space, far outside any of the boundary lines.

Lorana: This is the Jintara System :: turns to Ensign McVey :: Tell me what you know of this system, Ensign?

The ensign bristled somewhat and then crossed her arms.

McVey: Erm, I didn't know I had to prepare …

Lorana: Your specialism at the academy was astrometrics, is that right?

The Scottish woman, with pale skin and bright red hair moved her arms to her hips in a show of outward frustration and anger.

McVey: :: annoyed :: Yes but -

Lorana: :: blunt :: Then you should be aware of the sectors and regions of the Alpha Isles. Especially this particular one. :: her paw moved over the console again and they zoomed in further :: This is the Jintara Nebula. :: To Ensign Lyrick :: Do you know why the Jintara Nebula should be of interest to Starfleet?

Lyrick: Yes, Lieutenant. The Jintara Nebula is a diffuse category that spans almost the entirety of that region of space. It has been most difficult in charting for previous Starfleet crew. The last expedition was seven years ago and the nebula was only partially scanned as the dust clouds were so volatile and dense.

Lorana: Well done, Ensign Lyrick. Your data is accurate but outdated.

The Saurian straightened his back and his eyes blinked vertically.

Lorana: Recent long range scans have shown that the star cluster within has cooled, and show evidence of the formation of a new planet. The dense clouds contain hydrogen, carbon and iron; the ingredients required for a planetary system.

Each of the crew looked at each other with excitement. Exactly on time, Chief Alieth entered and they all turned to face her. She was accompanied by a young security officer.

((OOC - I know it can be difficult to dive in but leaving this optional for our newest crew member to join our little cosy/low stakes science mission))

Alieth/T’Fearne (optional): Response

Lorana: Commander Alieth will explain the details of our mission and the purpose of our scientific expedition to the Jintara System.

Alieth: Response

Luxa allowed the Chief to address the gathered scientists in her usual manner. Once she saw a gap in the briefing.

Lorana: As you should be aware, anything we can gather about this region of space can hold much significance to the wider Alpha Isles, not to mention what we may find. Every nebula has its own secrets, our job is to uncover them.

Alieth: Response

((OOC - this is going to begin a cosy/low stakes science mini- mission, if anyone wants to get involved then please let me know

Note to T’Fearne, I have dropped a tag for you but this is optional, which means you can feel free to ignore and focus on other things on the ship. Or you can choose to come along with us as our security escort ))
