((Chief Science Officer's Office, Science Complex, Deck 10, USS Ronin))
Shortrith: Apologies, I distracted myself. Anyway, back to the conversation at hand. How did you find yourself coping after this mission?
oO Thank you! Oo
The counselor was changing the subject. V'Len felt his mind and his antennae slow down. He noted his breathing had slowed some and he quickly put two fingers on his carotid artery. As usual the surging of his pulse was there.
Kel: It's nice to have thing back to normal again. I'm mostly glad we all made it back. I wasn't expecting quite so intense an experience.
Renaie nodded sympathetically.
Shortrith: Did you find any solace in the fact that the Niac and Raga from our timeline was still alive? I understand that any form of seeing people you care about explode usually causes significant distress, no matter if you see them alive later.
V'Len was silent for a moment.
Kel: I think I always thought it was our Raga and Niac. That they'd somehow traveled back in time so we could avert a disaster. Thinking it was really them certainly kept me motivated to succeed.
Shortrith: That's definitely a firm point of motivation for anyone in your scenario. You did well for someone in that position, under those circumstances.
V'Len sat back in his seat.
Kel: I will admit to being pleased that the crew was willing to follow my lead and that I was able to get the reactor into a safe state.
Shortrith: I think it's a sign they respect you, sir.
Kel: If I could be so bold I also appreciated your leadership of Medical. You managed to wrangle Rox and De La Croix. That's no small feat.
Shortrith: Thank you!
Kel: If they ever, Koala forbid, give me a command, I'd certainly welcome you if you were interested.
Shortrith: What do you mean? I take it the 'they' you are referencing is Starfleet Command?
Kel: Yes ::pausing:: although I hear the Ferengi have some lucrative contracts to recruit captains for the vessels.
V'Len tried to visualize himself on the bridge of a Marauder combing the galaxy for business opportunities. He couldn't quite see himself having enough averice to pull it off.
Kel: I'm sure you'd do well in any fleet that would have you.
Their smile widened.
Shortrith: Aww thanks! That's really nice of you to say. How do you think you went in your stint as Acting Captain?
Kel: Better than my stint as acting first officer on the Oumuamua.
The pairing of Greaves as CO and V'Len as XO was fraught from the start. They did not see eye to eye on many things and of course he'd almost blow up a portion of an alien vessel.
Shortrith: Did it take as much of a mental load as you thought?
Kel: It did take a lot of mental energy to keep all the balls in the air. I'm pretty sure I left the ship without notifying Major Singh. I've been thinking about giving her flowers or chocolates to apologize, but I think she'd make me run laps around the shuttlebay all the same.
V'Len glanced at the console on the desk an noted the time.
Kel: I hate to say this, but I need to go and let my dog out.
Shortrith: Response
Kel: It's my brother's dog, I'm just watching him. His name is Mork from Ork.
It had now been 2 weeks since his brother had left for the "next system over" and V'Len was wondering how soon Kumel planned to come back for his charge.
Shortrith: Response
Kel: If you fancy a walk in the arboretum Mork is always keen to make new friends. We could continue our discussion.
Shortrith: Response
V'Len gave a happy smile and rose to head out of the officer.
