((Bridge, Deck 3, USS Ronin, Ross-580 Gas Giant A, Moon Sigma))

V'Len stepped out of the ready room and tapped his commbadge.  He was pleased that there were people on the planet willing to speak with the Federation.  Whatever was going on down there, V'Len felt it best to have a multipronged approach.  Based on the Suliban and the Kzinti he'd seen he was confident there would be injured parties.  The trick would be getting a handle on what the base on the surface was for.

Kel: =/\= Kel to Ensign Esot and Chief Solana, please meet me in transporter Room 2. =/\=

Esot: =/\= This is Ensign Esot. Understood, Captain - we will join you there shortly. We have some additional updates regarding the black box data. =/\=

Solana: =/\= Understood, sir. On our way. =/\=

V'Len shook his head.  He was still getting used to people calling him Captain or Skipper.  Those were titles for Karrod, but not for him.  He was still having trouble not turning around when someone said "Doc".

Kel:  =/\= Excellent work Ensign.  I'll look forward to hearing about your findings. =/\=

((Transporter Room 2, USS Ronin))

V'Len was not at all sure what he would need.  Normally he would have grabbed a medical bag or as CSO a sampling kit, perhaps some other instruments.  He had no idea what a Captain carried into a given situation.  He decided a scientific tricpadd made the most sense.  He also grabbed a phaser.  He did not like the impression coming in armed might give, but phasers could be useful in a number of applications.  He entered the room and noted that Esot and Solana were almost finished donning their HDES.  He hurried to get his in place.

Esot: Captain Kel.

Solana: Sir. ::she nodded:: Considering the suits it’s safe to say you already know about the Sencha radiation?

Kel:  ::nodding to each::  Ensign, Chief. Thank you for joining me.  ::grimly::  I had surmised it might be a risk, thank you for confirming it.

V'Len finished placing his helmet on and checked the suit's controls carefully.  One thing he was pleased that it had was a transporter pattern enhancer.  While the readings indicated it was currently safe to transport down, that situation could change given the radiation that was moving into the system.

Kel:  ::glancing at Solana::  You're well-armed.  Expecting an ambush?

Solana: Always. ::she slipped on her helmet:: And in my defense sir, the only people we know of dabbling in Sencha experiments are both deserving of getting shot. I don’t think I need to cite regulations about armed escorts, do I sir. ::She said dryly::

Kel:  No Chief, I appreciate your preparedness.  Are we ready?

Esot: Ready as I will ever be.

The group gathered on the transporter pad.

Kel:  ::nodding to the Bajoran crewman::  Energize.

((Habitat Dome “The Hab”, Moon Sigma, Ross 580 System))

The trio materialized on a raised platform in what seemed to be a large control room.  V'Len would not describe it as "state of the art".  In fact he suddenly wanted very much to bring Dr. La Croix down to show her how much worse it could be.  He decided matters were complicated enough.  He quickly glanced at his tricorder and saw that the radiation levels were lower here and consisted more of alpha and beta-type emissions.  Much easier to handle.

Across the room there was movement and a man slowly stepped into view.  By his features he was likely Romulan, though a Vulcan was not out of the question.  He was still too much in the shadows for V'Len to get a clear glimpse of, but his movements would not be what V'Len would term healthy.  He stepped down the platform to approach the man who drew himself up as formally as he was able while still leaning on the person beside him.

tr’Kharis: ::chin up, squaring shoulders:: I am Administrator Soldu tr’Kharis. Thank you for your… timely offer of aid. ::swallows a bitter taste:: This is my 2IC, and our chief project scientist, Joakim Aduko.

Aduko: Response

Solana: Senior Chief Petty Officer Solana. Security.

Kel:  I'm Captain V'Len Kel of the Federation starship USS Ronin.  What exactly is going on here?

V'Len had been very reluctant to use the title Captain and he'd felt odd saying it.  However, it was critical that the administrator and his second in command had full confidence in him.  He was not sure how well Lieutenant Commander would be received.

tr’Kharis: Containment failure of an experimental reactor. An unfortunate accident. We would appreciate assistance evacuating the system. I believe you’ve already encountered some of our… overeager personnel. Are they alive?

Aduko: Response

Kel:  ::nodding at tr'Kharis::  They are for the moment.  I've got a team looking at your reactor now to see what we can do to get under control.

Solana: Experimental and dangerous it seems. ::she commented::

tr’Kharis: This is not a research base anymore, Mr Kel. It’s an extinction timer and by the gates of Erebus, I intend to leave it before it swallows me.

V'Len took his helmet off.  The crew had all been given doses of hyronalyn and lectrazine to protect from the effects of radiation.  Given the levels of radiation here were relatively low, V'Len felt the risk was worth it.  He did not want to be seen as someone in a cozy suit here to assess things.  He wanted to make it clear they were no part of this.

Aduko: Response

Kel: I'm afraid it's not that simple.  Whatever is happening her is already disrupting space at the edge of the system.  I have reason to believe that if we abandon this place it could cause a quadrant wide disaster.

There was silence for a moment before Ensign Esot piped up.

Esot: Are you the only ones here?

tr’Kharis: ::deep sigh:: We have a few brave scientists, who volunteered to stay behind at The Lid. Rurat'dari and another are trying to stabilise the reactor, but it has been two days, and they have been unable to patch the leak. Your people are welcome to try Mr Kel.

Aduko: Response

Solana: Will that include full access? Won’t do us any good to trip any security protocols trying to keep you from being swallowed.

Kel: We need everything you can tell us.  ::looking at Esot::  Can you assess what level of containment we currently have and if there is a way to reinforce it?

Esot: I will need a closer look at the leak itself, plus access to the records for all of the previous attempts. I will also need access to the reactor's schematics and power systems layout.

V'Len nodded.

Solana: Do you have any personnel in need of immediate medical treatment? We can beam them back to the Ronin for care while we try to save the sector from the mess you caused.

V'Len caught the comment and furrowed his brow at Solana who already looked apologetic.

tr'Kharis/Aduko: Response

Kel:  What Chief Solana is trying to say is that we have excellent team on the Ronin that can see to your injured.  We even have a guest aboard who is one of the preeminent surgeons in the Federation.  I've had a team dispatched to begin search and rescue operations here and in the reactor area if needed.

Esot: Perhaps a bottle of kanar. ::amused:: No, I think that's all I should need.

V'Len let the statement hang in the air.   Esot seemed to have what she needed minus the bottle of kanar.  V'Len took a look around the room.  There were only a few other shadows in the space.  For the first time V'Len noticed a faintly metallic taste in his mouth.  Sounds seemed muffled which was typical of radiation exposure.  Even his antennae buzzed with annoyance.

Solana: I for one would like to know who you’re working for, Administrator. The radiation we detected here isn’t exactly something available just anywhere. And neither of the groups we know working with it are the sort to have good intentions for its use. Are we going to have to worry about having unpleasant company showing up?

V'Len nodded at Solana.

Kel: My security attaché is correct.  It would be beneficial if we could understand who built this facility and why.  We're at a considerable risk here and surprises would not be ideal.

tr'Kharis/Aduko: Response

Esot: Anything else, sir?

Solana: Aren’t there supposed to be backup safety measures in place for something like this?

Solana was going after the pair like a determined holonovel detective.  V'Len tended to see people as patients.  Victims.  But Solana was right and the safety of his crew depended on the answers.

tr'Kharis/Aduko/Esot: Response

V'Len was shocked.

Kel:  You're kidding?  Are you not aware of the nature of the Sencha radiation you're playing with here?

Solana: Based on the current state of things, how long can someone be exposed before they end up like the two we picked up earlier?

tr'Kharis/Aduko/Esot: Response

Kel: I'm going to say not long.

V'Len could have done the math, but there wasn't much need to.  It would be a matter of days for anyone in the habitat dome.  Perhaps only minutes for someone directly accessing the core.

Solana: If we’re going to be here a while I recommend we set up some pattern enhancers in case that leak starts messing with the transporters.

Kel:  Make it so, Chief.  Ensign Esot, what do we have to work with?

tr'Kharis/Aduko/Esot: Response

V'Len considered the models Esot was presenting.  It was far beyond his expertise, but if he had a patient losing blood he would suggest a transfusion.

Kel:  Is there any chance we could channel power form the Ronin into the containment gird?  Reinforce it to buy us some time?

tr'Kharis/Aduko/Esot/Solana: Response

V'Len turned around and gave the Romulan an incredulous look.

Kel: ::sternly::   As I've already stated Administrator, leaving is not an option on the table.

tr'Kharis/Aduko/Esot/Solana: Response

Kel:  This radiation is already disrupting subspace, I'm not sure we could even generate a stable warp field.  ::turning back to Esot::  Ensign get a hold of engineering.  Get them working on setting up a power transfer.

tr'Kharis/Aduko/Esot/Solana: Response
