((Corridor, Deck 10, USS Ronin))
As they walked through the adjoining corridor he heard the laughter from one of the lounges and smiled at the revelry of several of the crew playing some sort of game.
Shortrith: Do you still keep in touch with them?
Raga: Indeed. Some at least, and not as often as I should I suppose. I’m sure Serala would appreciate more frequent contact. She particularly is always eager to hear about Samier and Zaraiya. I haven’t received any messages from most of them, but I suppose that’s no reason for me to not reach out myself. It’s nice to even just get a missive because someone was thinking of you, right?
Shortrith: I suppose so, I did promise some people that I'd keep in touch before I left.
Raga: We’ll have plenty of time to do so. Given our mandated R&R on the Farm until Division Fourteen is done with their poking and scanning.
Shortrith: What do you plan on doing there?
Raga: I skimmed through the data on what the facilities offer. Personally, I’m most interested in the terrain. Endicronimas Four has some exquisite mountains. I’d like to try climbing at least a few before we leave. There’s a particular peak in the northern hemisphere that’s in a band of near constant cloud formations. Apparently from the peak the aurora borealis is visible.
Shortrith: That sounds quite fascinating.
Toryn nodded and smiled quite broadly. Sylara even hooted for emphasis from his shoulder.
Raga: I always try to climb at least one mountain, regardless of its elevation on every world we visit if possible. Aside from this ship, crew and my family it’s what I love most. The challenge is usually more technical than physical unless we’re on a high gravity planet. My strength makes it easier to climb, but my increased mass means I can’t use handholds that others might. It’s all worth it though, getting to the top. Seeing the view and then jumping off and flying back down.
Shortrith: That sounds really interesting. I'll have to check it out as well.
Raga: Anything you’re looking forward to seeing or doing down there while we’re here?
Shortrith: I'm not sure, honestly. I like the idea of mountain climbing, as I'm a pretty outdoorsy person myself - I walked the Kokoda Track on Earth during my holidays when I was in university, so I might do that as well.
Toryn hadn’t ever traversed that particular trail but knew of it from his time on Earth. Since he’d climbed or visited quite a few of the ones in that part of the world while at the Academy.
Raga: Nice. If you do so, be sure to check the computer file “Mountaineering Essentials”. I use it as part of the climbing classes I’ve taught and it also has the replicator patterns for every piece of kit you might need for any type of mountain. Most importantly, don’t forget your comm badge and to log where you’re climbing with the Ronin and planetary security.
Shortrith: Yeah, I definitely think so. I'll plan for that.
Toryn saw her attention shift to a room up ahead.
Shortrith: And there's my office, I probably should go and prepare for my next session. Shall I talk to you later?
Raga: By all means, don’t let me keep you, counselor. Thank you for the company. It’s been nostalgic. Oh and don’t forget to enjoy some R&R yourself. That’s what we’re mandated to be here for.
He chuckled slightly, only partly certain that if they tried to leave the system D14 would track them, sedate them and put them in stasis for the next month. Partly.
Shortrith: Will do, have a good one! Thank you for a good conversation.
Raga: Of course.
As they waved goodbye he offered a cordial tip of his head and continued on passed the door. A soft hoot in his ear signaled that the owl perched on his shoulder liked the counselor. And that someone was hungry.
Raga: Alright. We’ll grab some targ shanks on the way down.
Sylara shrieked excitedly at that with her head bobbing up and down like a toy with a bad spring. All he could do was chuckle and head for their quarters. First to gear up for a climb, including the new back pouch he replicated to let her sit snuggly on his back while he climbed. Then a stop in the cargo bay for some targ meat he had in stasis for her. Then, off to conquer a mountain.
[End scene for Raga (and Sylara!)]
